What comics are you reading now?
So we're all Valiant fans here,
Some I guess started reading them back in '92. I know I did.
But what are you reading recently that compares to some of the great comics of the 90's like Valiant?
We used to have Neil Gaiman Sandman (!). Now we have Neil Gaiman Eternals
IMO there's not that much comic gold out there now? Especially on the regualr series front. What good regular monthly issues have there been lately?
Here's my short-list -
1. Captain America - The first 2 arcs by Brubaker have been magic, winter soldier etc. Really capture the magic of comics in a way that isnt really being done anymore (i think).
2. Ultimates - pretty cool
3. Identity Crisis - i liked it but its not even really current is it?
4. Stray Bullets

I've heard Fables is a great series if you're a Sandman fan, but I haven't read it and can't speak for that myself.
For a while, JMS's work on Amazing Spider-Man was the best Spider-Man had ever been. But now, it kinda hurts to read it. Maybe those are due to the editorial decisions and not JMS's writing. I'm sticking through this Civl War mess in hopes that's the case.
Astro City is still one of the best books I'm reading, but it always has been. The Samaritan special that came out recently was really good.
I think overall, the quality of the writing is a lot better than the 90s. But I don't think there are very many books that really stand head and shoulders above the crowd. Let's face it, as good as Valiant was, it really wasn't that hard to be better than everything else at the time.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Some interesting titles there Heath. I was out of comics for a looooooooong time so I missed out on the JMS run. Will definitley look into it now that you mention it though. What issues are his run?Heath wrote:I've heard Fables is a great series if you're a Sandman fan, but I haven't read it and can't speak for that myself.

Civil War, I cant sit through it without smiling at how bad, how wishy washy, the story is. For an event like spider-man revealing his secret identity, they've made it feel about as exciting or as impressive as reading issue one hundred and something of spawn
I'm changing the subject heading as well to something more general because I really want to see what people are reading nowadays.
I still think its a very thin selection...come on people, prove me wrong, support your comics

Currently, I'm reading a borrowed set of House of M. Once Done I'm gonna re-read my Valiants up to Chaos Effect. I try to forget the horrid garbage that came out afterwards.

Lately I grab/look forward to this recent stuff:
Jonah Hex
FEAR Agent
Fell
Walking dead
Civil War + Tie Ins (all of them)
52
Batman/Superman
All star batmans/supermans
Loveless
New Avengers
Mouse Guard
Exterminators
Y the Last Man
Nextwave
Marvel Zombies Appearances/Ultimate FF
Talent
Astonishing Xmen
Moon Knight
Ex-Machina
Then I grab random stuff, whatever looks good or has a cool cover
Edit: I read your post wrong, nothing compares to Valiants
I just listed what I get every month, most of which has pretty good writing, I dig most of the DC vertigo line, and Image has some great dark themed books like Walking Dead and Fell (definitely some of the best stuff out there) Grab the First WD graphic novel for 10 bucks, you wont be disappointed

Current:
Iron Man
New Avengers (which most likely I'll stop reading when Civil War is over)
Annihilation
Civil War
Green Lantern
Batman (Kuberts run only)
Conan
Back Issue Hunting:
Silver age Captain Marvel (I need one friggin' book for my run)
Valiants (very sparingly now... don't need much more)
80' Silver Surfer (.50 bin fodder)
I'd say in the next few months my reading list will drop substantially though. More or less after runs are done or mini's are finished I'll probably only be buying Iron Man, MAYBE the Avengers book he's in and Green Lantern. If Andy Schmidt isn't pulling everyone's leg on the CBR forums, I'll eventually be buying the new Quasar book as well.

Yeah the Morrison/ Kubert run on Batman started pretty well. Pretty interesting. I like the Kubert Ultimate Iron Man mini too.IMJ wrote:Current:

Go on over to the CBR forums and tell the editor of Annihilation that you want a Quasar series in the thread that he started. He's currently asking if we want a series with a Quasar who isn't the original, and everyone is giving him a resounding "NO!"

Let's see: New stuff:
MARVEL
Ultimate Spider-Man
Ultimate Fantastic Four
Ultimate X-Men
X-Factor
DC
52
All-Star Superman
Justice League of America
JSA/Justice Society of America
JSA Classified
Teen Titans
Firestorm
Hawkgirl
Supergirl and the Legion
Justice
Secret Six
52
Planetary
Fables
Jack of Fables
Y
American Virgin
As for older stuff, I've got several runs I'm trying to finish. I'm very close on my Silver Age Teen Titans, and am also beefing up my 60's JLA run. I'm also almost finished with the Nick Fury issues of Strange Tales.
On newer stuff, I'm trying to finish my I Vampire House of Mystery run, and I'm starting to get into the Flash (original and 80's) and Gen13. And after reading the first issue of the new Wonder Woman, I'm afraid that those WW back issues may start calling my name soon...

The Brubaker run is really good, and it keeps getting better, but let me tell you, I personally thought the Bendis run was unbelievable, the way he tormented the Daredevil character and put him against those odds were just greatcobra_commander wrote:Yep, I'm picking that up from the Brubaker run. Books that I will read as soon as I get them because they are excellent:
The Walking Dead
Daredevil
Invincible
DMZ
Books that I buy that I'll read if I get a chance:
Usagi Yojimbo
Astonishing X-men
Noble Causes
Y
Ultimate Spidey
Ultimate X-men
Batman
Blue Beetle
Flash
Books that I buy out of habit that will probably be axed shortly:
ASM
Fantastic Four
Uncanny x-men
Some of the other spidey titles
Avengers
Right now, all my books are in storage as I'll be moving soon. The only book that I pulled for reading is the Inferno TPB. I remembered liking it years ago, but I'm finding myself struggling to get through the first few issues.

I definitly agree, it really got me into Daredevil, I felt it took what was done when Frank Miller was on the book, and took it a step further, i relaly enjoyed Elektra, and Matts insanity when she died, also how he wanted to kill Bullseye. So for the most part, the worse Matts life is, the more I enjoy the book, sorry Matt....If anyone starts reading the book, if you cant find them cheap or w/e, start with issue 9? the echo storyline, great story, reminded me of early Elektra, the Kevin Smith storyline was ok, but i hated the ending personally, meaning the villian behind it all, just my opinion, after that, I havent hated one issue, except that re-cap issue400yrs wrote:The entire series will be a classic in the future, I believe.speedracex wrote:The Brubaker run is really good, and it keeps getting better, but let me tell you, I personally thought the Bendis run was unbelievable, the way he tormented the Daredevil character and put him against those odds were just greatcobra_commander wrote:Yep, I'm picking that up from the Brubaker run. Now that is an excellent endorsement.
I'll definitley look into it then.
I totally agree with the Kevin Smith comment as well, I actually picked it up when it first came out and the story was very mediocre. In fact, I think you're holding back aren't you? to be honest it sucked! "It was all imaginary...Mysterio..." pfff! shame on you kevin smith
