Re-reading a Universe
I'm now in New Brunswick and visiting my parents. In the last couple of days, I rescued my Pre-Unity valiant comics from the confines of storage. It's funny to see how I individually bagged and boarded my Valiants but basically threw most of my Marvels in a box.
I've started to read
Vintage Magnus 1-3 (need to find #4)
Magnus 0 (I actually paid $75.00 in 1994 for this comic)
Magnus 1-8
Solar Alpha & Omega
Solar 1-6
The comics are better than what I remembered. The challenge will be to see how things turn out just before and after the "Chaos Effect."
I've also read most of Jim Shooter's Defiant Universe a couple of months ago. He tried to recreate the magic of the Valiant universe with the Defiant titles. What I realize now is that Jim Shooter was missing a key ingredient, the great contribution of Bob Layton and artists like Barry Windsor Smith. Fortunately for Mr. Shooter (and a loss to Valiant), he took David Lapham with him over to Defiant. While Defiant is very good, the early Valiant is much, much better. The characters are well thought out and very believable.
I'm looking forward start reading X-O Manowar and my all-time favorites Harbinger (the original team) and Shadowman.
