My absolute most-used line from any movie, EVER - and most people just don't get it!Brother J wrote:"I'll buy THAT for a dollar!"slym2none wrote:dons100 wrote:I'll have some pre-unity on the display rack and some later titlies in the $1 boxes.

Great choice, BroJ!

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.
Re: Booth at Show
I brought 8 boxes of Valiants to San Diego which, frankly, was a waste of time. Most of the hardcore Valiant collectors on here already have multiple copies of most of the issues.Brother J wrote:Hopefully your prices on pre-Unity stuff won't be bloated like most sellers who have VALIANTs on display...dons100 wrote:I have a both at the Chicago show that I'm selling some of my pre-unity valiants. The booth number is 1448. It's about half way back on one of the sides, across from the hotdog stand. Next to me is a company selling t-shirts. I'll have some pre-unity on the display rack and some later titlies in the $1 boxes.
Don
(I had them priced at half Greg's guide. If that's high or bloated, then what is the use of the guide then?)

Re: Booth at Show
Obviously I wasn't referring to you, then. 1/2 price of Greg's guide is more than fair. However, you hit the nail on the head, many of the long time regulars here probably have multiple copies of most of the regular pre Unity books. I'm not looking to buy more at even 1/2 guide. Now finding them in a bargain bin somewhere is a different matter!sckao wrote:I brought 8 boxes of Valiants to San Diego which, frankly, was a waste of time. Your market for these is going to be someone just getting into VALIANT or someone returning wanting to finish sets. That's why I targeted my recent 1/2 guide board offer on Magnus and Solar pre Unity books to people who didn't already have them.
I'm talking more about the stories I've heard and dealers I've seen who have pulled these books out of bargain bins or storage and now think they can get 1992-93 prices for them. It's happening a lot more frequently than I would care to see.

Here's my report after attending the show today. First, we arrived early at 8:30, only to find out they wouldn't let us in until 10:00 instead of 9:00 like I thought because we weren't advance ticket holders. Then they told us to wait in a room for the show to open up. My wife and I sat patiently waiting for security to let the people into the show. We waited and waited, finally it was 10:15 and they STILL didn't let the group in that room in. We finally went up and asked what was the holdup. We found out that the line in the room were not waiting to get in the show, but were waiting for autographs from Thomas Jane. Boy, did I feel stupid, but it wasn't really my fault. The Wizard security didn't seem to know what the heck they were doing!
My main search was for underground comix, which was VERY disappointing. Almost none of the dealers brought undergrounds, and many of the ones that did were either overpriced or in poor shape. I did manage to pick up a few gems, but overall very disappointing.
VALIANT wise, I did manage to get a very nice NM+ copy of Harbinger #1 for $10. The seller had it marked $20, but all of his books were 50% off. The only other VALIANT I picked up was an X-O Manowar #0 GOLD for $8. Pre Unity books were plentiful, but almost all were on the display boards and either priced at full value or often times way over value. The only rare VALIANT books I saw were held by two dealers who post here, Daydreams and Mr. V (sorry, Mr. V, missed the name of your setup). Daydreams was one of the first dealers I visited. I recognized him from photos posted here on the boards. I introduced myself and discussed VALIANT stuff a bit. He had quite a few nice gold books and some VVSS toughies. Sorry I didn't make it back there, Zach, but I was a little frustrated after being shot down by umpteen dealers when I asked about undergrounds and just wanted to get the heck out of there.
I came across Mr. V's setup, but didn't know he was a board member until I asked about the sweet rare VALIANTs he had posted. He asked me if I was a board member, so I introduced myself. Again, he had some great books, but of course they were priced at full value, so I really only inquired about the one I didn't have, a beautiful copy of the Shadowman Special Edition. The price was more than I would pay for it, but was probably fair considering the rarity of the book and the great condition it was in.
I met my final board member when I was sitting at a table resting. I saw Byrneout (Ric) walk by and of course recognized him from pics and the wrestling clips I have watched of him. I called out his name and he came over and talked a bit. I even introduced him to my wife, the only board member that has met her thus far. My wife sat at the table waiting for me all day and did one of her favorite things, which is people watching. There were plenty of weird people to watch, too. Very good meeting you, Ric!
I also heard from the guys I met that Zero was in attendance as was IMJ. I didn't know what either of them looked like, so we didn't meet up. Hope you fellows had a good time!
Another interesting story occured at that same table right before we left. I wasn't there at the time, some gentlemen approached my wife's table and asked if they could sit there. She made room for them and watched as the one fellow did an interview with the other, holding a mini tape recorder. My wife had no idea who the person being interviewed was but figured he was famous. She asked someone around her, and they told her it was Thomas Jane. The guy who told her that was even cool enough that he gave my wife a picture of Mr. Jane as the Punisher. When I showed up, the interview was still going on and my wife told me who he was. I didn't even recognize him because he had a shaved head, which I learned later was for a movie role. I was ready to leave, but my wife told me to wait a little bit. After the interview was done, she asked Mr. Jane to sign her photo, which he did, even personalizing it. I managed to get out a comment, telling him I really enjoyed his potrayal of Mickey Mantle in the movie *61. He smiled when I mentioned that and thanked me and said that the movie was a lot of fun for him to make.
The funniest part of the Thomas Jane meeting was that so many people had to wait in line to meet him and also had to pay for his autograph. My wife only waited until his interview was done and got it for free! Gotta love that.
I visited the Zoom Suit booth and was very impressed with their setup. The first time I went there, John Taddeo was not around. The lady who was there was very nice. She asked if I was familiar with the book and was shocked when I explained to her I had 50 copies of the first issue! I told her I was from the VALIANT board, which she knew about. She was even going to call John on her cell to come back to the booth to meet me. I told her not to bother and that I would come back later. When I returned later, he was gone again. I just went ahead and bought all of the ZS variants that I didn't have (the prices at the show are a LOT more reasonable than in their online store). Too bad I missed John.
Ok, don't think I left anything out. I really had a great time other than the wait and the lack of undergrounds. Also, I wish I would have had more time to root through the bargain boxes, but there was just too many. I also stopped looking for stuff because I managed to lose my folder filled with want lists.
Anyway, that's my report. Very long but I felt I had a lot to tell everyone.

not a whole lot going on valiant wise at the con. saw a few random books out and about. pete (Zero) stopped by and chatted for awhile, and he picked up a nice stack of pre-unities for a good price. craig (dellamorte) stopped by thursday and is coming back tomorrow. talked with brother j for a few minutes as well. i actually met a couple other guys who visit the boards now and then, forget their usernames though
i put some VVSS and golds up on our comic wall, but had absolutely no interest expressed towards them.
overall, it's been a lot slower con than last year. sales all over the place seem to be down, and the lay out is terrible. we aren't having a terrible show by any means, but we are nowhere near where i expected us to be compared to last year.
one more day tomorrow, then back to denver to pick up my stuff and head right back to iowa to move in. it's going to be a loooooooong week

Wolverines claws shouldn't point in three different directions - and I bet his abs were "painted" for better definition.

nope, one day shot, wouldn't mind going back but I'm back home and it's a fairly long haul getting to the show from Milwaukee. I also have a bunch of stuff going on tomorrow not the least of being a family get together for my and my wife's birthday. Both her, myself and my brother in law's birthdays are within 6 days of each other, so we traditionally have one party for all three of us.slym2none wrote:Nice report, BroJ! I only got to go opening night and today (Sunday). The crowd seemed down from previous years but it may have been that I'm usually there on Saturday. I bought a bunch of .25 and .50 cent books. Got a few pieces of art.

Talked a bit with Zach (thanks again for the pass and letting me hide my stash under the table). I saw Pete (zero) as well but he was in a big hurry to to see Ashley Woods so we couldn't talk much.
I had a good time but the show doesn't seem to be the big deal that it was a decade ago. I think Wizard may have killed the once second biggest show of the year.

Had a good time, myself.
Ran into Brother J, John Taddeo, and IMJ - (hmm... a trend?) all on Friday/Saturday. On Sunday, I found Mr. V's booth, but had no luck in locating Zach, dellamorte, or others.
All in all, it wasn't a bad experience. Attendance did seem down, but I hodl that partially due to the proximity of SDCC (time-wise, that is) as a ton of Chicago "regulars" didn't make it out as they had attended SDCC.
It was good to put faces to names of those I met, and it was great to meet everyone in person.

I found a guy there that had a bunch of early Valiant books. I bought 72 from him for a little less than $1.50 each. All were bagged & boarded. All were at least VF with many being NM. They were:

I also bought around 50-75 misc dealer incentive & DF books from the '90s all for $1.00 from different dealers.
