Definitely agree about Superman 75. As much as I hate to admit, it may be the most influential comic book of the last 30 years. The ramifications of its publication still effect the industry today. I wonder if DC secretly ever regretted publishing it?.....probably not. DC and every other publisher benefitted from its presence in the market because exposure to the general public boosted sales across the board. Valiant for instance......nearly everyone who purchased a Supes 75 bought a BS #1.DawgPhan wrote:ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:DawgPhan wrote: And yes Superman 75 is more important than Harbinger 1. Harbinger #1 was a good book but the title was definitely my least favorite of Valiant's preunity run. I can, however, see that an arguement can be made that it was one of the 10 most important of the decade. Its influence to Valiant was to bring in a younger reader that Magnus and Solar previously had not (until the release of Solar 10 which seemed every kid had a copy of). An even bigger effect was the buzz generated by the hunt for back issues. The pub for that increased interest in Valiant and other independents.
After Supes 75, Spawn #1 may have been the second most important comic of the decade as far as industry influence..........and it really burns me to write that as I am NOT an Image fan. After its publication, there seemed to be a deluge of comics brought to market.

Harbinger is such a good read, but Magnus is my favorite pre-unity as is Solar. The topics they approached were geared more towards adults (don't know if I would have appreciated them, if I had read them as a kid-I am glad I was able to read them as an adult), whereas Harbinger was geared towards a younger reader.Second_Death wrote:Definitely agree about Superman 75. Spawn--yep...so many young readers loved it and still do. I think every kid I grew up read Spawn.

You're looking back on it with hindsight. You have to remember that this was a big thing at the time, and people actually believed that it happened. Like ZWH pointed out, people heard that a global icon, the first superhero, is said to die in a comic. In fifth grade people I don't believe would actually buy superhero comics were talking about the Death of Superman.Zero wrote:Now, I see your point about Superman 75, but I think you're wrong. That book was important the year it came out & has no bearing anymore. There's nothing key about that book since the character didn't really die. Outside of the overhype & high sales numbers the book does not matter. What's revolutionary about hyping the death of a major character that ends up not being dead? So, it's a big character. Big deal. The character didn't die...
Put it this way, if I were to ask a large sample of people who used to read comics or don't read comics, I would bet that there'd be more people who would know that "Superman Died" or recognize Spawn over people who recall Harbinger.

I agree with The Spider & ZephyrWasHOT!! . I'm not sure how to reply like everyone else does.... I'm new at this. Please someone let me know, I'm a bit IGNANT when it comes to boards. Supermans "death" had so much media coverage that when #75 came out it was instantly priced at around $15. How many movies & different comic book series, cartoons, video games & books has Superman had? Even Spawn had his movie, video games & a cartoon. What did Harbinger have besides some good stories for a few years?

I loved them all, as when they came out I was only 20-21, so I was young enough to really dig Harbinger (and being an X-Men fan didn't hurt) but yet I have always loved science/speculative fiction as well as fantasy fiction, so books like Magnus and Solar didn't turn me away. It was such a GREAT time to be in comics...tarheelmarine wrote:Harbinger is such a good read, but Magnus is my favorite pre-unity as is Solar. ...and then came the bust, the speculator boom, and almost the death of the industry.

Well, DC, Image, and Dark Horse came out unscathed. Marvel had to file for bankruptcy (I almost had a heart attack that day, and I wasn't even 30 yet!) And VALIANT gave way to Acclaim, which just gave way.
So, here's to the new VALIANT - may we see good comics from them, and soon!

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Yes and yes....a difference of 6 years. It doesn't happen often.

The highest grossing film of 2005 was Sith. The Best Picture was Million Dollar Baby.

Looks like you are stuck with that custom title. Funny thing is mate, I never thought you were that weird. Hecking heck, you post on a board full of comic and collecting geeks. Weirdness is relative.cobra_commander wrote:I got you and a Star Trek fanboy calling me weirdZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:The Weird One....you gotta follow every thread, man....Chiclo wrote:The Weird one.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Which "one"? CC's not understanding....that's what he said about someone ELSE....yeah, it could be interpreted as referring to HIM, but since almost all custom titles are things the people actually said, it should be pretty obvious to the non-dumb.leonmallett wrote:Looks like you are stuck with that custom title. I still think Depluto's custom title is hilarious.

It's cool, though. It takes all kind of fruit to make a fruit cup.
