Cinlach's Herocon Experiences...
not much to speak of, except to say bernard chang is a freakin' madman.
sean chen missed his flight and subsequently missed the con...so as i'm talking to bernard and telling him how much i hate not seeing chen because i was looking forward to chatting about the penguins and the solar statue, chang asked me "you wanna call him?"
he then pulls out his cellphone and calls sean..."hey, is sean there? hey man, someone here wants to talk to you". he then hands me the phone.
"uh, hi sean...you have absolutely no idea who this is."
i introduced myself and he recognized me from here on the boards, we chatted for a couple of seconds and i told him that chang was, in fact, certifiably insane.
bernard then signed an @ssload of books for me and i actually got my visitor standee signed and remarked a little later on.
my cellphone died so i had no way of getting in touch with any of the folks i was meeting so i missed a lot of time with them...so that sucked
valiant stuff was few and far between but i did finally find the elusive beast known as unity red, only to have a buttmunching vendor cause me to pass on it.
he had it listed at $150...which is totally stupid. i asked what he'd do for me on the price, he said $75. now that's a hell of a price cut but it's still more then that book was worth and more then i had. i'd only brought $60 for the whole day. i told him straight up it was more then i could do and made my $60 budget known up front. he then asked if i'd take it for $50...so now he's knocked $100 off and he's more in line with what i could do. besides, the book was really nice looking. i tell him i'll take it, reach in my pocket and pull out...$47.
before i can offer to go grab a couple of bucks from the wife he tells me "i'm through running this con of yours. the atm is in the lobby. if you're serious about buying this then go get some money and maybe i'll sell it to you for $50 if i don't sell it to someone else first."
if i had been within arms reach i would've broken his *SQUEE* nose.
yeah right jethro...i ran an intricate scheme based on my knowing you not only had the book but would be willing to drop the price $100. and i did this all just to screw you out of $3.
if it had been the last copy in existence i wouldn't have taken it if he had PAID ME.
also, for some reason the organizers decided to not have ANY SEATING at all in the con area. normally they have a small stage set up with chairs so folks can watch artists paint/draw for the art auction, eat their lunch or basically just take a break from the action.
my wife, who still has problems with her ankle after breaking it in new orleans a few years ago, had to leave the convention center and find a seat in the lobby about a quarter of a mile away because the folks putting on the con couldn't be bothered to make a spot for folks to have a seat if they got tired...and no, the floor does NOT count as a place to sit.
i missed getting a lot of stuff signed by giffen due to a medical emergency in his family.
i missed ellis and hitch's signings.
i talked to a dude who stood in art adams line from 10am to 3:30...and it was less then 50 people. i guess adams was doing fully finished art for everyone for free.
greg rucka, strazynski, brandon peterson, jg jones, mike bair and joe quesada were no where to be found...although they were supposed to be there somewhere.
all in all i had a lot less fun then i thought i would due mainly to folks either not being where they were supposed to be or not being at their tables at all, and the inexcusable lack of seating for con attendees.
the cool stuff was...
• goofing off with bernard chang and watching him give a very detailed portfolio critique...to the level of thumbnailing how he would do the panels
• watching dave dorman sketch
• seeing the joy on joe staton's face as i asked him to sign 2 copies of "deadly hands of kung fu", which he said he hadn't signed any of in over 15 years
• seeing the exact same look on george perez's face when i asked him to sign a "dhokf" also
so, i mean i had fun...just not as much as i thought.
tons of silver and golden age books up there so if that's your bag then you'll find plenty to interest you.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

i found a magnus #o as well, some sweet pre-unity magnus and solar too. i thought i was going to have a very good day when he grabbed overstreet to check the prices...then he grabbed wizard.
i wasn't really looking for any books other then the 3 i need...i did see some shadowman #0 non-chromes in a 50 cent bin but didn't get them.

I ran into a similiar guy when I found some late run XO's and a Magnus 0. He pulled the guide out and wizard, and I let him quote a price and then we went back and forth until I got the price I wanted of $30. It was a great because there was another dealer who would not budge on his price for Mag 0.
I saw one crazy guy who had a HARBY pink but wanted $50 for it. He came down to $30, and it was a good looking copy, but I already have a graded version.

nice finds, guys...
I was volunteering for a decent amount of time and was VERY broke, so I didn't even bother looking around too terribly much. Spent a little bit of time with Brian Wood b/c I think his stuff is amazing, but I think I annoyed him...
Erik Larsen is, possibly, one of the nicest comic creator dudes I've ever met. I saw him sign HUGE stacks of books for people... I only had a copy of SD #1, but I got that signed, and he did a quick sketch of the Shrew on the back for me. Which was totally sweet.
Other than that, I bought some American Flagg issues and spent most of my time in Indie Island trying to find stuff I thought would be cool. (I'm kind of digging The Last Sin of Mark Grimm)
The Friday night shindig with Warren Ellis was sweet... even though Bud Light was $6.25 / bottle. But I bought a six-pack of Yuengleng for $5 at the store first, and no one busted me as I sat right next to the people selling beer and drinking my own out of my back, so that was good.
Ended up trading a JR JR piece (page 2 X-Men 176) that was kind of beat up for New Mutants 87. I definitely got the bad end of that deal, but I was tired of holding onto that art b/c I didn't like it at all. Scott in cut-off jeans shorts staying stupid *SQUEE* to Jean. Or Maddy... whoever.
I saw a lot of "premium" Valiant stuff but I didn't even stop to ask for prices - everything seemed REALLY high for Valiants. Alas. Still a good time. Perhaps next time I'll have more than $40 for the weekend!
