VALIANT Continuity Bible - A Valuable Archival Resource?

Post by edlockman »

edlockman wrote:Why not just post it for all fans to read if it is such a valuable part of VALIANT history? Have it be acessible through the site here. Or, post it somewhere else - post it on the Usenet groups. $35 is not much to ask, but if it is that neat of a find, why not post it up for all. BTW, Book of Geomancers has been up on the usenet boards for a few years now.
I know that this is from a diferent thread, but if anyone who already has the VCB and is interested or already has posted it somewhere, please PM or e-mail me at edlockman@hotmail.com confidentially (so no one gets rankled on the site :}.

Thanks and I hope we can have this Valuable Archival Resource be a thing that everyone can enjoy.

prepare yourself dude...i think there are people who will have a SERIOUS problem with this.

this has been a hot button topic here since the first official copy was sold by kevin vanhook to a board member and ignited again with the sale of bob layton's copy a couple of years later to a different board member.

copies have been made at an "at cost" basis with a myriad of opinions on the legality/ethics of such a action.

i have a copy myself but one of the conditions when i originally bought it was that i would never sell or reproduce it which i will honor.

i personally think this idea you're entertaining is a bad one...not because i'm unwilling to share the coolness of the vcb, quite the contrary. but with the trademarks and character rights still up in the air i'd hate to see something we do here, no matter how well-intentioned it may be, have a negative impact on the chances of getting new material printed.

the board member who bought kevin vanhook's copy, their name escapes me at the moment, might not have a problem with sending you either a copy of theirs or allowing you to post it online.

but i have a feeling that you're not going to get much assistance with this...sorry to be the bearer of potentially bad news, but i just have a hunch about how all this is gonna work out.

and that hunch is not good.

each online image will need a "watermark" on it. At the LEAST.

time to wait and see what people post now. :hm:

if the true and rightful owners of the copyrighted material give their blessing then it should be relatively easy to get it done...but i really doubt you're going to get approval from them.

Folks, I don't have one...

Post by edlockman »

Folks, before anyone flames me, let me please let me make one thing clear - I do not have a copy of it and if there are as many legal issues around it, it would probably not be the best thing to do. However, it DOES surprise me that no one, whether legal purchase or not, has posted it SOMEWHERE online - usenet or otherwise.

Well, it's like 200-300 pages. That's the only barrier. That's why the Geomancer's book was posted - it was doable. Even with OCR technology, the bulk of the Bible is still a daunting task.

I expected the whole thing it to show up on DVD long ago, but it hasn't so far. We have heard that photocopies of an "original" have sold for big $$ to unsuspecting buyers. At least I hope they were unsuspecting.

I was the one who purchased the first one from KVH. KVH had already made a few copies and given them to a few key people, which didn't sit well with me. We worked it out, and I kept it until Layton's showed up and was widely distributed by the buyer. I since sold my "original" to another board member because of it. The whole thing sucked and *SQUEE* me off to no end. I am mad I had to give up such an important item, but I paid way way too much for something that could not be properly authenticated.

There was a project in the works to bring the material in this book with some updating to the fans in an "official" way. We haven't heard anything about that in quite some time, and the people involved have been...(how shall I put it....hmmmmm....oooh it's really tough to be diplomatic here....)consistantly unreliable as of late with a lot of different irons in different fires.

I don't understand why you felt the need to post this. All you have to do is email Steve and send him a check if you want one. I know you know that since you posted in Steve's thread. What are you triyng to do by putting out a call for people who already own a copy? Is Steve charging too much for you?

It's not that Steve is charging too much. In fact, for $35, it's a good deal. I guess the heart of my question is does it already exist out there online? It may, in some PDF form, which would make it easier, just a lengthly project. I wasn't trying to upset people, it was just plain curiousity. Of course, there is the old saying about curiousity.

If this had been converted to electronic form, you can be certain it would be readily available through unofficial channels.

Did you get to keep a copy? Was it at least as interesting as they say it is? That is the true source of my curiousity - whether or not it adds to the "VALIANT experience." I'm sorry that you got shafted.

I never heard of this project before. I have been away from the site for a while. Who was involved? Is there anyway that the average Poster here can get it started again?

It's a great resource book. It would be very useful if there was a revival of the characters and the continutity at the just post-unity timeframe. I did not make a copy of it before sending it away.

It was not a public effort. I don't want to get into it any more than that, I'm trying to keep my nose (and big mouth) out of what is going on 'officially' with Valiant Entertainment.

Sorry to hear that the "project" isn't happening because of the new owners. It would be nice to hear ANY updated information about them other than "Wait and see".
