How many.......?
....what would have otherwise been 9.8, 9.9, or even 10.0 books have been destroyed over the past 10 years by idiot sellers who cannot be bothered to pack so that comics avoid damage by typical handling in the USPS?
I know I have HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of books that I received that were stellar, stunning books BEFORE shipping...that were mangled solely because they were shipped without bag and a board, in a manila envelope...or shipped WITH a bag and a board, but no cardboard, in a manila envelope....or shipped in a box, but allowed to move around, so that every time the post office drop kicked the package, the books would just smash all to hell against the corners....
Thereby turning these books into 9.0s, 8.5s, or worse?
Thousands?
Tens of thousands?
Dare I say....millions....?

At least 50% of what I win on ebay falls into this category. There are some really good sellers, particularly from these boards, that do a great job of appreciating the books after they are sold and ship them accordingly.
Then you have the ones that don't care or lack common sense.
I've told sellers I will pay extra to secure my purchase. Then after no response to my offer, I receive a bent up book protected by one flimsy piece of cardboard and a response to my anger of, "I'm sorry, I always ship comics that way and have never had a problem, look at my feedback". Total dishonesty and thievery. All to skim an extra dollar or two from shipping charges, IMO.
Forget buying from the UK or anywhere overseas unless they are a respected member of these boards.
One bit of advice, unless you use heavy duty cardboard, which some members on this board do, do not send comics in a package that just barely fits in a mail box. I think some books made it to my house in NM condition until the mail lady jammed them into my mail box.
Can you tell you touched a nerve.

when i was selling on ebay the best possible way to ship a book in my opinion was to just go to your LCS ands get the Diamond boxes that new books ship in on Wednesday, ive never had happier people recieving books, and there essentially bulletproof boxes, especially for a large amount of books, i would ship the 2 small diamond boxes in the large diamond box

Personally, I don't care what one uses to package your comics, if a package sent to me gets in my mailbox, the comic IS damaged... and I hate it, I hated it SO much, I went to the PO and talked to the local Postmaster, politely explained my situation, and ever since then my mailman gets out of his jeep to walk all packages to the covered front porch. I'm sure my mailman hates me now, guess I'll have to try and do something good for him... maybe I'll find out what brand of cigarettes he smokes, buy him a carton.....GJB wrote:At least 50% of what I win on ebay falls into this category. Think I have an idea for a similar thread........

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.
Good for you slym, I'm glad the guy changed his ways. My maillady cracks me up. I don't see her that often, but when I do, she's usually on her cell phone as she delivers mail. That takes talent.slym2none wrote: Personally, I don't care what one uses to package your comics, if a package sent to me gets in my mailbox, the comic IS damaged... and I hate it, I hated it SO much, I went to the PO and talked to the local Postmaster, politely explained my situation, and ever since then my mailman gets out of his jeep to walk all packages to the covered front porch. I received a copy of Action Comics #583 that I won on ebay, and was easily a 9.8 copy, but because of poor shipping on the sellers part, it was bent in half by the post office, and the cover came disconnected. First negative feedback I ever gave due to the significant difference between actual shipping method and described shipping method.
Before I moved, I had one of those community mailboxes that everyone goes to to get their mail. Each person has like a 3 x 3 inch square hole. Now, the mailman I had was pretty cool. If anything resembled a package to ANY degree, he would put it in my front glass door. Between that and the actual door. Perfect! But some nitwits would send books in an envelope or very flexible carbboard, with no hint of "caution...do not bend, fragile, handle with care!!!" Just an envelope looking like it carried insurance forms or something.
Anytime I would buy something from an ebay dealer, I would let them know about this...but there was always some who never paid it a 2nd thought.
So I had a few packages from dealers that when I opened my mailbox, this is how my Comic Package looked......

Yeah, I'd say that's close.Technique wrote:

The modern books? The 90's books? No problem. They are obtainable.
A 70's book that was otherwise a 9.4-9.6?
That just hurts.

If I had a dollar...no, a QUARTER....no, A PENNY for every time I heard the words "You're the first person that's ever had a problem" or a variation thereof...I'd be richer than Oprah. Maybe not Bill Gates, but definitely Oprah.
Ayup. Can you tell you touched a nerve.
This is more of the "whining" I've been accused of doing.
Some folks think I should just bend over and accept what is.
Where's the smiley for that......?

That's one thing that I've always been lucky on. First, we've got a very large mailbox. Second, any time a package doesn't look like it'll fit in the mailbox (even a priority envelope) the mailman leaves it on the covered porch. I'm not aware of ever having any books damaged in shipping, although the closest I came was some cels from GTO. The envelope was bent (not by the mailman) and I was ready to panic if the cels themselves were damaged. Nope - just a little crease in the sketches the cels were painted from. Definitely dodged a bullet there.

So the next question is....for those of you who received books or anything that was damaged specifically because of negligent packaging from the seller...
.....didja do anything about it?
Did you send the seller a note, did you tell the seller they had to make up for it...anything?
As I'm sure everyone reading this knows, I always let every seller know if their crappy packaging damages...or comes close to damaging....a book.
Mainly because of principle: if you sell me a NM book, whether the price is $.01 of $10,000, and it arrives damaged because of seller negligence (as opposed to post office negligence)...then you owe me a partial refund.
Anyone else...?

Yup. I always do... and the last thing I got that was damaged (from a member of this very board, no less) I let them know and received a prompt refund. Another deal was a lot I'd won off of eBay and when I opened up the box, there were FOOTPRINTS on some of the comics, muddy footprints (not described in auction) as well as a cigarette butt in the box. I got to keep the comics and got a refund!ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:So the next question is....for those of you who received books or anything that was damaged specifically because of negligent packaging from the seller...

I've been pretty lucky on that end of the deal, anyways........
