I haven't bought for awhile, but I really liked the holograms they were using like on Wolverine #75 & #100.

The holograms used for Wolverine 75 and the rest of that storyline were very good. I also liked the all chromium cover for X-Men Alpha-Age of Apocalypse.

The Marvels mini-series. And the gimmick I liked about that wasn't the acetate covers, but the unusually high quality of the story.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

It is, indeed, an OUTSTANDING cover...layout, type of gimmick, design, artwork, color....all worked REALLY well together to make one of the best cover gimmicks I've ever seen.

If I ever find mine, I'll scan it.

I always liked the "low cover price, regular stock cover" gimmick, where all the money was spent on things like good writers and artists.

Damn, I miss the 80's Marvels.....

I really didn't like any sort of embossed cover or one that had cut-outs or inserts - the worst being some Darkhawk issue (#25? #50?) that had the same treatment some Eclipso comic had - a "gem" stuck in the middle of the cover that protruded out at least 1/4 inch. WHAT THE :censored: WAS THAT? How are we as collectors supposed to STORE that? Not that I bought either of those titles, mind you... just the ones I liked least.

Maybe this should go onto a different thread.......

My favorite Marvel gimmick would have to be $.10 comics, duh.

Well, I'm sure there are PLENTY of copies out there to try it on... then again, who wants to waste the $16-22 to possibly get it graded??!!?

  :D

My favorite Marvel gimmick was when they finally fixed their continuity holes, started telling stories in a tighter, more cohesive universe, instituted standards for their art, writing, and timeliness that had to be adhered to and quit alternating between estranging their fanbase and pandering to a vocal minority.

Oh, wait - you meant gimmicks that actually HAPPENED?

Dr. Strange #50 (circular prismatic foil)

Namor #37 (blue/green prismatic foil and Jae Lee art)

The various colored Spider-Man foils with the prismatic webs:

Amazing #375 (Gold w/Venom)

Spectacular #200 (Silver w/Green Goblin)

Web #100 (Green w/Spidey Armor)

Venom #1 (Red w/Venom)

Venom Gold #1 (Gold w/Venom)

There's more, but these stand out for me right now.
