Valiant Wiki is set up
I set up a ValiantWiki (using the mediawiki software, the same as wikipedia) on my website for people to test.
http://valiant.vitekweb.com
Feel free to take a look, log in to modify pages (you have to have an account to upload pictures and such). I posted a few sample pages, but feel free to edit and change those.
Let's see how this works. If needed, I can set up all the pages to be "protected" to only admins can alter them - and then I will give people from here admin access to do so.
Let me know what you think!
(I set up my username as "geomancer"- heh heh)

I have added a few entries. One of the nice things about this software is that you can cross reference EVERYTHING.
So, for example, I added an A&A 0 issue summary (showing the format that I thought would work best, although that is just my opinion). In it, I made a reference to Unity, which is listed under the "Events" section. I also refer to Archer, who is listed under the characters. So you can cross reference any entry, so people can jump around and look at everything.
The entries I made were from memory, so please feel free to correct them.

The wiki looks great and there's some great content that's been added. What's really needed however, is organization. My wife works the next three nights and I can't sleep when she's not here, so I'll have plenty of time to work on an organization scheme.
Good work!
Good work!
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Like I said, I just posted some suggestions for organization. Since we can't limit access, or limit who can edit a page, all we can really do is hope that if we decide on a suggested format, people will follow it.
As I said, if people want to change layouts or designs or anything like that, feel free. Also, if you have a good image to add on the upper left banner, let me know.
I see some people have already started to add stuff.
If there are any people who want to be "in charge" of this, let me know, and I will grant you administrative access (to protect pages, and stuff like that).
PM me if interested.

Chris,
Thank you for being pro-active in getting this started.
I had actually loaded the same software to the ValiantFans.com website
(in an area for testing) and had some of the same administrative questions.
Here's a "high-level" question for us:
What is the difference between putting the comic summaries, etc.,
on a member's site (such as CJV's site) versus putting them on the
real Wikipedia? www.wikipedia.org
It looks like some work has already been done on the "official" Wikipedia.

Image upload is now enabled. Thanks Heath!
Greg - the only difference I would think is the probability of some random vandalism or incorrect editing.
A site like wikipedia is much more well known, has many more people access it, and may be prone to more incorrect editing and/or vandalism.
A wiki we set up is going to probably (although not definitely) only be used and accessed by this community (especially if it is a subdomain from a site that is not heavily visited or doesn't have obvious name recognition).
The only other difference would be that as wiki software updates and changes, and user options change, we will have more control over those features. (for example, me disabling the anonymous editing option)
If you prefer to host the wiki, that would be fine with me. I just wanted to set something up to see how it worked, and *if* it worked.

I have two options to try to prevent random vandalism/spamming of the wiki.
I have currently disabled anonymous user editing. I apologize if people don't want to create accounts to edit, but I figure that will discourage random spamming and vandalism.
The other option I have is to "hide" the "edit", "discussion" etc tabs from people who are not logged in. Right now, anonymous/non logged in users can still see those tabs, but they can't do anything until the log in (or create an account).

In my opinion, the main difference would be that a wiki site we do (whether it stays at CJV's site or becomes part of this site) would be "ours." It would be part of our community. Like the Vc/fVSS projects - made by Valiant Fans for Valiant Fans.
That may not be enough of a distinction to make it worth the time and effort to anyone else. That's just the way I see it.

BTW, if someone has a good image file they want to send me to use as the wiki logo, go ahead.
We probably shouldn't use the Valiant start for the same reasons that Greg doesn't. But something with all the characters (or at least a lot of them) would be cool.
BTW, if people do want to simply use the wikipedia entry (or would prefer that the Valiant wiki is hosted on the valiantcomics.com site) that is fine with me.
Lastly, since there is already alot of information on the Wikipedia site for Valiant comics, we could just copy and paste (and then edit) some of that rather than typing everything from scratch. The wikipedia copyright allows for this, so long as we give credit to wikipedia and the at least 5 of the previous authors (and allow our page based on the wikipedia pages to be freely copied/distributed/etc as well). Something to think about, if people don't want to start from scratch.
