New York Comic Con Starts Tomorrow!

I'll be there on Saturday only this year, anyone else planning on attending (I mean aside from svair, that is)?

The guest list is looking fantastic and they just added, if the rumors are true, FRANK MILLER! I'll definitely be bringing my EW1 store poster for him to sign, if I can get that close.

Look for me at my friend Paul's booth**[shameless plug for a bud below] or at the ACTOR booth lending a helping hand.

:thumb:

** He's gone into business as Pop Fun Merchandising doing collectible tumblers (glasses really). There is a special Spider-Man glass that will be premiered at the show, and an entire line of glasses featuring licensed comic book, comic strip and cartoon characters. Marvel is his newest licensor and he has some fantastic glasses on tap! Check out his website, sorry no web address (google it).

You can find listings for the glasses in my eBay store. I am the 'unofficial' eBay presence. :-) Do a search on Toon Tumbers, and there is a Toon Tumbler category in my store.

But, use his website to order rather than my listings.

The Spidey glasses are very limited and I expect them to be sold out the first day, although Paul my not bring them all each day so he has some across the whole show. He is looking to sell through on them, and he won't be raising the price at the show. If you are going to the show, bring the extra $10-$15 to buy one!

Big thanks to Woogie for helping him out. Paul has put a vast portion of his time, heart, and soul into the glasses, and I'm really hoping he finally gets a big reward.

I actually did want to attend the show, but after reading about the ridiculous long lines to get in, I decided to pass this one up. It seems the people who organized it did not expect such a huge turnout. There's no way I would wanna wait 2+ hours on line and especially when the admission fee is $25. Anyways I am interested in what the folks who attended have to say about it. So let's hear it. =)

It was a freakin madhouse. I got in at 12 noon on Friday. It was a soft opening from 12-4 for retailers and professionals that had registered beforehand, then the public was let in at 4. It was like a regular convention for the soft opening. Then when the public came in,I had to get the hell out! The lines were terrible. I felt bad for the people standing there because everytime I would go out in the lobby, the line was ridiculous. The show closed at 8pm on Friday I believe, and when I left at about 7:30,there had to be atleast a couple hundred people still trying to get tickets for the next day.
There weren't too many comic dealers. The one guy that Svair knew was about the only one I saw with pre-unity stuff. I picked up Harbinger #1-4 with coupons from Neat Stuff from his $1 boxes. That guy needs to change his name. Every show I see him at,he's always late getting his booth open, him and his display look like a train wreck, and his long boxes of books are packed tight, with unorganised backwards and upside down books....it sucks, but it was worth it for the Harbingers. The highlight was meeting Todd McFarlane and Jim Lee. Both were very cool and I got some sigs from both. We went to a museum that was having a retrospective of McFarlanes art (me & AzbatX). There was maybe 50-75 people there and McFarlane had stuff on display from teenage years to current, and he walked around the room giving everybody the story of his comic career. It was laid back and cool. Just a few pieces on display were the original cover art to Spawn #1,Amazing Spider-man #298,double page splash from Spider-man #1,along with about 30-40 other pieces...stuff was just killer to see in person!
It was worth the trip,I just wish there would have been more comic dealers. The guys set up,all said that the Big Apple Con,is THE SHOW,for comics. I know it's not Valiant but here's a book I got signed on the front by McFarlane and on the back by Jim Lee.....Image

I was there all day yesterday. It was a good Con overall, very very crowded! I feel bad for those that had to stand on line and then not get in, luckily I had a dealer pass and was able to bypass the lines.

Apparently, the show stopped selling tickets at 11 a.m. yesterday and then stopped letting anyone into the room around 2 p.m. (not sure how long that lasted, but I did start seeing new faces later in the afternoon). Even dealers who had left the floor were not being allowed back into the room in the early afternoon!

There were tons of cool talent everywhere I looked, Steranko, Neal Adams, Chris Claremont, etc., etc. Saw Sean Chen too and thanked him for the live chat of a couple weeks ago here and after he hears that he rummages around under his table and then starts pulling penguins out of his bag and plopping them on the table, little Solars, a Punisher one!, etc. Cool stuff, cool guy. As I'm talking to him Tony Bedard (marvel artist) is also there and then Steve Massarsky comes up and I had a chance to talk with him as well. Nice guy.

Found a couple Valiant bargains with Neat Stuff (as usual, these guys always bring some Valiants). Picked up a Harby 1 with coupon for $5 and an XO and Rai blue cover tpb for $5 each, a beat up Magnus 0 no card for $5 too. Not bad at all!

The highlight was visiting Steve Geppi's traveling museum display (I think Geppi is one of the guys behind bringing this Con to NYC). Anyway, I met the man himself, nice guy, and I drooled a little looking at his NM copy of Action #1 (YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT!! HIS NM ACTION 1!!). Wow!

Overall, I think the actual back issue comic dealers were outnumbered by non-comic booths by about 3 or 4 to one. Artists alley was packed for the entire day, DC's booth had a list of a couple dozen people signing at their booth and Marvel was also lining up people outside of their booth for signings.

At one point, I think Todd McFarlane was in his booth because there were people surrounding it about 8 deep. I couldn't actually see inside, but unless there were some models getting changed, I think the man himself must've been in there.

A fun time!

He was selling them as fast as he could; don't really know about total numbers, but 6 or 7 sold for every 10 people that stopped to look. The problem was limited access; one long table fronting the aisle, so if three or four people were looking for a few minutes, that meant two dozen were walking on by without taking a look. We tried to move them out as quick as possible, but the laws of physics prevented even more sales.

These glasses sell themselves they're so cool! I can't wait to see the two Marvel lines that are debuting on the website in 4-6 weeks! I left with EIGHT of them! lol

He still had plenty of the Spideys, both clear and frosted. I got two each!!

The biggest Spider-Man collector in the world was there and bought two dozen of them himself. Goes by the name Romita-Man on ebay according to Paul.
