Re: Spiderman's "new" costume
That's funny considering his black costume is similar to Spider-Woman II's costume. Now all he needs are new costumes based on the Byrne-created Spider-Woman's.Kino wrote:Please say it ain't so......that costume looks like a bad ripoff of spiderwoman's costume.Todd Luck wrote:Spidey's new costume...

Okay, I know they never say these things are temporary because they're trying to get readers who don't know better to buy the thing but, c'mon, we've around the block few times here. Anyone want to take bets on how long Spidey will be in his "new" costume?

wolverine always helps to sell a cover, why not make a wolverine-spiderman hybrid costume? that would be SO original-somebody gimme q's phone number, i bet he'll hire me...
this reminds me of something...hmmm how about a foil enhanced cover to show off magnus' new costume that gives him "more muscle". we all know how well that worked...

This new costume is really killing my enjoyment of Spider-Man lately (I only get ASM). It's just so lame. I've loved JMS's run on ASM but I'm not enjoying the current issues solely because of this costume. The crapiness of the costume is so distracting, I can't even tell you what happened last issue.
It's not written well for one thing. Other than the black costume, he's wore the red & blues (with slight variations but basically the same design) since high school. He shows up wearing this goudy red and gold costume and he's instantly recognized by the cops - in a world full of people wearing goudy costumes and new people wearing goudy costumes appearing every day? He doesn't look like Spider-Man. He doesn't act like Spider-Man. But everybody still just knows he is Spider-Man.
And it goes against the character of Peter to be so gung-ho about this costume. Spider-Man has always been about what strong character and determination can accomplish. Not gadgets. Not armor. This isn't Spider-Man. This is "The Iron Spider."
I want Spider-Man back, dangit.

I think Peter is going to be making some tough choices during the civil war and I think the accepting/not accepting the Iron Spider costume is going to be a part of it.Heath wrote:

I agree about him being recognized but he has been through a hell of a lot and right now he looks up to Tony as a father figure. His wife and Aunt are living in Avengers Tower so his life is pretty tied in with Iron Man.
That is why I don't see him being so accepting as against character at this point. Either way I am enjoying all the issues so far

Marvel comics are dead to me.
They can issue a million variants, all signed by Stan Lee, and I couldn't care less.
Titles like Ultimate Spider-Man are for those who have no idea what the glory days of real comics were all about. Don't b!tch at me if you happen to like such titles. I'm not slamming you OR your tastes. I'm just an old fart who actually remembers what a thrill it was to come home with a stack of GREAT stories with NEW villains that only cost from 12¢ to 25¢ each. What a blast it was to be a Marvel junkie, bringing home 20 to 30 titles a month all for under $10!!! I actually pity any collectors who have NO IDEA what a great feeling that was... Sweet Jesus, what has happened to our hobby??? <sigh>

I have to agree. I am iold enough that I remember those 12 cent and 15 cent issues. I still collect a lot of comics and as a reviewer of comics I get a lot of free ones not from Marvel of course. I pick up a half dozen Marvel titles but they are no where near as good as they once were. The stories and art just don't have that same magic anymore.

Spiderman wouldn't be recognized by the cops just because he has different colors on and no webbing? The head to toe body suit with a big spider on his chest and the bug eyes (plus the use of his powers) wouldn't clue them in? People aren't that dense in the Marvel Universe. You must be thinking about the DCUHeath wrote:This new costume is really killing my enjoyment of Spider-Man lately (I only get ASM). It's just so lame. But if Spider-Man was the only kid in town with a flashy outfit and powers, who changed his costume frequently, then maybe they should recognize a change. But he's not. The Marvel universe is crawling with people like that. New guys popping up all the time. Plus, we've already got Spider Woman, there was the Scarlet Spider, Venom & Carnage, etc. There is plenty of precendent for characters other than Spider-Man using a spider theme or having a similar appearance. Spider-Man doesn't have a monopoly on the spider symbol. So why would the assumption be that anybody wearing a spider on their suit is Spider-Man - regardless of there being no other similarities at all to the real Spider-Man?Todd Luck wrote:Spiderman wouldn't be recognized by the cops just because he has different colors on and no webbing? I just think it was stretching things a bit far. It's one of those little minor things about this new costume that has bothered me ever since.
In the scene in question, a cop says something to thug along the lines of "Better be careful, that's Spider-Man!"
A more realistic (and I use that term lightly considering the subject matter!) approach to that dialog would have been something like:
Cop: "Better be careful, that's...uhm..."
Spider-Man: "Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!"
Cop (to Spidey): "Spider-Man?"
Cop (to thug): "That's Spider-Man."
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Wasn't there something said that this new costume would be able to change it's design at will (at some point, anyways?) Ever since the black costume was introduced (and before it "became" Venom) I always thought that Spidey should wear the red-and-blue during the day and his black costume at night.
That's just me, though.....

Yes, his suit is so high tech that he can morph into several designs - or even become invisible! There was a sequence where Peter was standing in front of the mirror in the new suit in the first frame. Second frame was the red & blues. Next was Peter in street clothes. Next was the black costume. All was actually the new suit changing the way it looked.slym2none wrote:Wasn't there something said that this new costume would be able to change it's design at will (at some point, anyways?) I just like the black costume almost as much as the red-and-blue, that's all.

C'mon Slim you know Artic Blast Spiderman would rock
Anyway all kidding aside, a general response to the thread: I balked at the costume before the issues came out but now that I'm reading the comic with the new costume in it I don't even notice it unless Spidey's using one of it's abilities (the gags with the arms were funny).
And of course there's a lot more going on in that book than a costume and the costume is a temporary part of a current storyline (how can have anyone doubt that Pete and Tony Stark will be parting ways soon after the ending of last issue?)

Stark in Amazing Spiderman 529:
"I want to hire you out in the open full-time as my second, my protege...I want you to go where I go, see what I see, hear what I hear. I need someone I trust implicitly to back me up."
It's the culmination of over a year of build-up of Peter Parker and Tony Stark as close allies and friends.
