East Coast ValiantFans.com Meeting Updates-March 31-April 2
Hey Strong Islanders...
its time we show we can be accomodating and hospitable....
I have been asked by some out of towners about hotels and rental cars...I will be picking up some of the guys in my car, from their hotels, and am hoping some other islanders would do same....I am hoping to get a confirmed list of people closer to the date and then find a good rate at one of the hotels on the island...it would be better to have them all stay in one hotel...we then pick up and drop off cars at the Long island railroad....
is there anyone who can help out...I have a 2 door hyundai...so i'm limited as to how many i can pickup...
Who's out there thats going to help??

Rental cars? What, are they NUTS???
No need to drive in NYC - pay a taxi or use the subways. I swear (and this coming from a home-body North Carolinian) that this is the way to go, IF these guys offering a free ride isn't an option that is.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Yeah I'm just next door in CT so I still don't know if I'm going to hop on the train or drive down. I guess I will know when the time gets a little bit closer.

Just saw this post now. I'm happy to help out in whatever way I can, but you can't crash at my place, sorry no room! Do not rent a car if you are flying in! It will be useless to you unless you are not staying in NYC.
I'm not sure where to recommend for a cheap hotel, as it seems they don't really exist on LI (except for what they call 'hot sheets' motels
), prices would be around $100 minimum a night. I would try to book at the Pennslyvania Hotel which is where the Con is held, both for convenience and the fact that it'll be cheaper than virtually anywhere else in Midtown Manhattan -- I would guess $140 or so a night. My suggestion would be for people to coordinate and share rooms to save on expenses.
You can get into Manhattan very cheaply from JFK airport by means of the AirTrain which costs $5 (I think) and runs to a LIRR connection in Jamaica Queens, from there 15-20 mins. into Manhattan for another $3-4 and you'll be right across the street from the convention location and the Penn Hotel. If you're flying into LaGuardia, it'd be about a $40 cab ride into Manhattan or thereabouts, I'd be happy to make an airport run and put you on a train into the City instead and save you the cash.
Any other questions, please ask. I've gone to school and worked in Manhattan for 10+ years.
Best pizza in Midtown is at a place called Little Italy's on Vanderbilt and 45th. Believe it! The meatball slice rocks for $3!
If you are worried about carrying boatloads of comics home with you, there is a post office two blocks from the convention center that'll probably be open until late on Saturday, pack it up and mail it back to yourself and save the hassles.

I am not sure how I'll get there yet. I may drive in from the north, I am about 5 or 6 hours away. Or I can take the train from Boston's South Station, or maybe I'll fly from Boston. I will look at all the alternatives when the time comes. I would like to stay at a hotel in the city and it would be great if there are other guys around to hang with during the off hours. I am thinking I will come in Thursday or Friday night and get a decent nights sleep (yeah right) before the con on Sat and go home on Sunday or Monday depending on what is going on.
I am looking forward to having the opportunity to meet and hang with some of you guys, hopefully it will all work out.

I assume you guys are all talking about the November big apple convention? I'll be there! I am a transplanted Queens boy myself, and luckily I have a close friend right over the bridge in brooklyn. Where are you all meeting up for a beer?
When I was five, I dragged my dad into "Mike's Comic Hut"... If only I'd known..

If you call the Marriott East side you could probably get in but it is big bucks! I am only getting in on a discount because I know someone.daydreamscomics wrote:they are all booked for that weekendmrwoogieman wrote:I would try to book at the Pennslyvania Hotel which is where the Con is held, both for convenience and the fact that it'll be cheaper than virtually anywhere else in Midtown Manhattan -- I would guess $140 or so a night. so i checked again and now they have rooms. i plugged in 2 people instead of 4
if 4 people stay in a room, and we risk "yeah it's just the two of us" it's $610 for three nights (friday - sunday)
that'd be $151.50 a person.
not terribly bad for three nights, especially since it's right nest door to the convention...
if this sounds good to anyone, lemme know. i know greg and bte are looking for a room, if there a fourth out there???
