Re-Reading: X-O Manowar #14
I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do
For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.
Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

A classic Valiant cover and great artwork. This is the first team up between X-O and Turok and to me they make a great team. The story is not bad, but some of Aric’s dialogue is getting strange (I just have to wonder why the writers feel the need to this). The worst bit is when he first gets out the pool after crashing in it from space and he tells Ken “Re-entry is such a *SQUEE*”.
Re: Re-Reading: X-O Manowar #14
Nice story. It fits well with Aric and builds on well established themes from Unity. It does feel more like a Turok story though. The art is slightly exagerated in places but mainly beautiful and well laid out. I like when the margin is used to show a travelling airplane once. That's intelligent. The cover is detailed and could have ben perfect without the gritty teeth. It was recently swiped, but unfortunately the swipe's colorist misunderstood the background.

The cover is...just alright
Not one of my favs. i do love next issue's cover though.
I can say the exact same thing about the stories. We get a very simple story that's all set up for later. We begin with a prologue for the first Turok plotline (so why am I reading it here?). Then we get some Juriassic Park wanna-be experiments that leads Aric to Turok. They then slaughter a bunch of guys who apparently can't hit Turok with machine guns. We also learn that wether you're a cybernetic dinosaur, a visgoth, or a South American appearently calling a Native American a "red skin" comes naturally.
The art's alright. Aric's chin and hair are killing me. As does Sear's drawings of Randy. Are those things on her face supposed to be glasses? But Sears does make the new armor look good (even with that dreadful new helmet) and Toruk, the dinosaurs, and the backgrounds look nice.
And the story does have some parts I enjoy. Aric's re-entry scene is funny. Some of the intro stuff for Turok is enjoyable. But the overall plot is just kinda generic and we end with an extremely violent sluaghter of hapless villians that seems to be there solely for the Image crowd to say things like "Cool he blew a hole in that guy." There's nothing powerful or disturbing about the violence and the "fight" is boring. Losers with guns just don't do it. If Turok hunts dinosaurs, lets see some of that.
Next issues better. For right now, a 6.
Continuity note: Turok and the dinosaurs were scattered through out time by the end of Unity because their minds had been exposed to so many things from the future (and other times) they subconsciusly knew they longer belonged in their "right" time period. This is explained in Secrets of the Valiant Universe 1
Oh, and this issue is obviously important because Sear's recently swipped the cover. I had to think about it a long time but I finally realized what the historical significance is. Is it that it's the first of 3 3/4 issues that Sears will do before leaving Valiant? Nah. This issue is actually the first appearance...of Aric's chest hair!!! It's amazing how that stuff grew on the way down from the moon...
Wierd historical note: Back in the time of pulps in the 20's and 30's a common cliche was for non-white character to pledge their loyality to the white hero who they consider their better (their chief, their captian, master, lord, etc). Though the white hero usually treated those "under" him with respect and as equals, the underlying theme of Aryan supremacy (which was popular at the time) was there.
So I'm a little surprised to see that cliche pop up here 50 years later. I'm sure no one meant anything by it. The creators probably aren't aware of the racial undertones of the cliche. Heck they may not have even been aware they were using the cliche to begin with.
