Re-Reading: Solar #25
I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do
For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.
Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

In part same as Secret Weapons 1 and continued in Secret Weapons 2. Together that's the introduction of one of the Valiant universe's most irritating characters. Also I'm afraid the, by now obligatory, glimpse of Solar's normal life is a bit too sugar-sweet (at least they joke about that in the story).

Who the hell is responsible for this character????magnusr wrote:the introduction of one of the Valiant universe's most irritating characters.
Can not be Shooter.
The only thing keeping my interest is Vanhook's writing style and Grau's art.

It took you guys THIS long to miss Shooter on this title?
This issue take place between two scenes in Secret Weapons 1. We see the beginning of the fight and the end of it in that issue. This issue just rehashes that and shows the stuff in the middle. Honestly, I'm perfectly happy with the abbreviated version myself, since Secret Weapons had other interesting things going on.
Here we're just stuck with a VERY long exchange of punches and -YAWN- hand beams. Nothing very interesting about this fight.
There is some of that neat use of old symbols and images associated with mysticism to put Darque's power and role in historical and mytholigical context like in Secret Weapons 1. Unfortunately, it's very brief here.
Mainly were stuck with Bender who I think is the perfect poster child for Valiant.
He starts out a normal guy. He's a super smart guy who acts like a real human being under Shooter. When he fights Solar the first time he gets his a$$ kicked because of his lack of experience.
So what do they do to him? They turn him into a being made of pseudo-science energy. He becomes an idiot and a raving madman. How do we know he's insane? Because he kills people while spouting out the same cliched line of bad jokes used by every other character who's insane in a comic book. He beats Solar with redicilous ease because somehow the psuedo-science energy he's made of is more powerful than a walking nucleur reactor. He's become a DC/Marvel/Image character.
If that's not the story of Valiant, I don't know what is
.
The thing that saves this issue is Vanhook's ability to write a coherent story with amusing dialog (some of Bender's jokes are actually funny). Not enough to save it but enough to make a decent read if you can't tell the difference between Solar and Captian Atom.
Another 6.
