Long or Short?

Post by DawgPhan »

I was thinking of making this a poll but I will just ask. What do you store your comics in? Long boxes or short boxes? What are some of the benfits of either? I store mine in long boxes. I like that I can get some many books in one box. It makes it easier to move them around. I dont like that there might be a huge gap when I first start filling the box. What do you guys store your stuff in?

Short boxes for me. I found it hard to find someplace to put long boxes without having them be an eyesore to my wife.

I ended up buying some shelves at Lowes that are the perfect depth to store short boxes, I can fit 4 per shelf which makes pretty economical use of space.

I'm moving in a few weeks and will then replace my tattered boxes, so this has become an issue of concern for me. For the most part, I like short boxes better because they're easier to store and easier to carry around. I'll be keeping my comics in the attic office of my new house, but I'll probably want to read them in the first floor sun room. A short box would make the trips easier.

However, I noticed for the first time last night that my short boxes can't hold Golden Age size comics. I'm not sure if this is just the brand I have, or whether it's somehow common to all short boxes, but where am I going to put my early Gold Key and TMNT issues?

I noticed the same problem with golden age books a few weeks ago.

I've started buying a few short boxes designed to hold CGC comics as they are wider and accomodate silver/golden age books better.

I only buy short boxes now. This way I can put them in a closet. My long boxes are in the garage. As far as golden age and Gold Key I keep them in a short magizine box.

Magazine boxes (about 2 inches wider). It's the only thing that fits well in the bookshelves.

For long term storage, long....for active use, short. Longs hold more, and are 'cheaper per square inch'...but they can hurt your back after a day of hauling them around. ;)

Oh, and I love Magazine boxes, too. ;)

Yep, long for long term storage and short for stuff you move around a lot. I have 175 long boxes filled and have had to move them twice - pain in the arse!

I try not to do any long term storage. If I own a comic book, it's usually because I either enjoy re-reading it or enjoy constantly gaping at it. Storing it somewhere where it isn't easy to get to is like not having it at all.

Easy to say when you've got, say, a couple hundred comics...

Not so easy when you've got a couple hundred thousand. ;)

And ya don't really NEED to look at a long box of, say, Solar #11....ya just needs the one.

And besides...these are (mostly) my retirement. Thank God I poured all the money I've made in the last 15 years into THEM, instead of the market...

Well....at least up to 2000. ;)

Well that's definitely true. I have no desire to own that many comics...ever. Just too much for my meager needs ;)

Investment purposes makes more sense, of course, but...Solar 11??

I use boxes that reams of paper come in. Xerox, Office Depot, etc.

Hey...it's Pre-Unity and the second appearance of EW. ;) Sure, it ain't no Harb #1...but still...it's better than, say, Harb #15. :)

I currently have my Valiant/Acclaim titles in three and a half long boxes (the other half of the fourth long box is filled with Valiant duplicate issues just to keep the box full. I keep the Previews and Turok magazine sized issues (bagged and boarded) on top of the longs.

Long boxes stack easier on shipping pallets..... where all mine are.... in a warehouse at work.... until I acquire a basement.
My company president is visiting my branch office for the first time next month. He might want an explanation why some boxes in the warehouse are marked 'Batman' or 'Valiant'.

Lifting full long boxes is good for the muscles too. I kinda enjoy it.

sorry folks, couldn't resist throwing that subject line in here!

I myself started converting to short boxes a few years ago, and designed a "comic closet" in my new house to hold my keepers. Still in the process of moving some in, but here are some pictures http://p206.ezboard.com/fmarvelmasterwo ... 1833.topic of my closet from the Marvel Masterworks board. Mine are the first one (I go by constantine41 there).
Thought I'd share those with ya since it was mentioned on another post as well.

Short boxes are much more manageable to go thru, move, etc. Also, 100 books fit nicely in there. The complete V1 universe fits perfectly in 7 short boxes if ya group 'em right. I also have almost complete runs of the main Marvel titles from the Silver Age to the present, and it's cool to be able to pull out my box labeled "Avengers v.1 1-100" and give 'em a read or just look at the neat covers in order!
