Thoughts? Are Valiant sales are slowing?

Post by danthecomicman »

Anyone else share the sense that Valiant sales are slowing down as of late? Not that I've done a comprehensive review of eBay or board sales, but it seems to be the case.

Perhaps it's close to Christmas, and people are spending/saving their money on that?

Anyone else feel the same way?

comic sales are slowing. Not just Valiant.

Anyone else notice the $1300 slow down between a 9.4 and 9.2 TMNT #1 CGCed book on eBay? The 9.4 sold for $1500... $1300 less than the 9.2 did. About 6 weeks between when these books were put up.

I've noticed the same thing, I'm not sure it's the "Christmas spending thing" because it's been slowly happening for a few months now. A lot of the more expensive issues like X-O 1/2 gold, Harby Pink, Magnus 0 and many others are definitely leveling out to lower prices once again. I just wonder if all hoopla over the sale has finally settled down and people are losing interest again.

I would have thought that the stock market would have a greater influence on people's discretionary spending, as opposed to the housing market. In the big tech stcok boom people were spending crazy amounts of cash on comics, which them dried up like a nasty prune when the bubble burst.

It might be attributed tot he HIGH GAS PRICES, too. That has cut into a lot of people's budgets.

True... true.

Too bad no one has invented a car which runs on Image [or insert other crappy publisher/title] comic books. At least they're useful in the fireplace. :)

Great, now that we are burning Turoks, you realize we've just completely skewed the "rescue" project....

Oh well, it's all over now, might as well break out the Archer & Armstrong 14s.... gas prices ARE on the rise after all.

Markets rise and fall...it's a simple variation of Economics 101 :|

but perspective in these days, is always the silent power in such markets. Slow markets= buyers market..IF your perspective, and understanding of said markets is solid.

So, personally, its buying time :thumb:

Does that work? Let's see...

This is not the Harby pink you're looking for.

I think the Valiant news probably boosted some sales since speculators always respond to hype.
But the bigger truth is Marvel and DC are choking the market right now and everyone is suffering.
Almost everyone I know is dropping books.
Heating prices, gas prices, it all is taking a toll but following x-overs and events are the biggest problem.
It is like the nineties all over again.

Except I find the quality of books much better and more enjoyable to read. I still can't read much of the 90's DC and Marvel crap - the quality was just awful. If it wasn't for Valiant at the time I might have quit buying comics.
What brought about the writing resurgence? Vertigo? Comics nearly going the way of the dodo?? Any thoughts?

I agree - the early 1990's were dark years for Marvel and DC.

I think the quality of the writing has improved because publishers realize that the target demographic (i.e. males 18+) responds more to writing these days (as opposed to gratuitous T&A and violence). Also, comics are priced outside most kids' price range, thus reinforcing the older male market.

I've been out of the new comic book market (I can't remember the last time I bought a comic off the shelf!), but I have been noticing that x-overs are starting to crowd out the stand-alone mini series.

I think when valiant kicked everyone elses *SQUEE* based on great storytelling that was a wake up call. vertigo was another big reason and so was the crash but I think valiant was the that really did it. The philosophy that valiant had early on continued with the creators that then went elsewhere.

They sure had the other publishers scrambling for a little while.

I think it's going to be like this through February. Sales should pick up in March.

I suppose getting that ol' refund check around that time makes the difference.
