Unity #1 Gold and Platinum
I apologize if this info is available somewhere on the site, but I couldn't find it. Why was there both a gold and platinum version made? Did retailers have to sell more to get the Platinum version as opposed to the Gold one?

I'm not sure if anyone knows the "whole story".
It's pretty well-known that Valiant kept copies of the premium books
for any occasion where they could be given away as rewards/incentives.
(Comic conventions, monthly contests, dealer sales incentives, etc.)
For the Unity #1 Gold and Platinum issues, I have a copy of the letter
that Capital City Distribution used when they sent out the books.
(October 1992), "Thank you for supporting Valiant, here's one gold and platinum."
But I don't know how Diamond Distribution handled their copies,
or if Valiant sent some directly to recipients, etc.
It's been "tradition" to consider the Platinum issue slightly rarer than the Gold,
though it's likely that both issues were printed more than 5,000 copies.
Sales on Ebay have been steady for both books for years,
and there's only a slight difference in price.
It's interesting that even though the price guides almost never listed
the value for Unity 0 Red above the value of the Unity 1 variants,
it's been said that "those in the know" were aware that Unity 0 Red
was a lot tougher to find than either of the Unity 1 variants.
