July 21st by Neil Long
Bankrupt publisher Acclaim may return from the dead following a reported $100,000 bid for the rights to the name from Central Investment Holdings.
According to a report on newsday.com, the name is not the only Acclaim property up for grabs. Crave Entertainment is also interested in the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX series and ATV Quad Power Racing 2 for a combined total of $120,000.
Each deal is subject to a higher bidder in the next few weeks, with CIH and Crave reportedly refusing to indicate what each company will do with the respective properties.
The sales would continue the stripping of assets of the failed publisher, following the sale of Juiced to THQ, the company headquarters, four unfinished projects and the rights to the company’s comic book characters.

A seperate party interested in entering the video game business was interested solely in the right to use the name Akklaim for video games.greg wrote:Someone probably got the naming rights for video games...
(Or they just scooped up the domain if it expired.)
I had originally listed that as one of the marks I wanted, but he was talking STUPID money on the one mark.

I have a really good question here. If you are getting into video games, WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT THE ACCLAIM NAME! Acclaim as a video game developer is considered by the industry to be the worst video game publishing company of all time. This is bad when you come in lower than Titus! Talk about starting out of the gate as the under dog! Why don't I just start a new products company with the Amway name? Hey, how about a jock deoderant with the name RAID? I could also start a Hot Dog company called Tasty Rat Turds!

Good morning.

Good post!
I don't know how many properties they have left, but I still have a soft spot for them ... Turok, y'know?
I'm sure Dave Mirra wants to see something happen after watching Tony Hawk make about a bazillion dollars the last few years.
BTW, the name Tasty Rat Turds is already taken.

As much as I hate to admit it, there were a few good games that Acclaim did, and I was looking forward to "The Red Star", but I just don't know if gamers feel that they can trust the name "Acclaim". I know that Comicbook readers don't, and it's because we got tired of being burnt!depluto wrote:motorhead wrote:I have a really good question here. Acclaim did a great job in the beginning with the Turok games, but after a while the quality started slipping and you could tell it in the gameplay. It was like they just didn't care anymore. Armorines is a good example of a game that should have great, but turned out to be mediocre.motorhead wrote:As much as I hate to admit it, there were a few good games that Acclaim did, and I was looking forward to "The Red Star", but I just don't know if gamers feel that they can trust the name "Acclaim". In the beginning? Acclaim has been around alot longer than you all think. I guess you all need a history lesson. They have one of the best NES games and one of the worst games of all time. Double Dragon 2 was a sweet conversion for it's time, but Total Recall is one of the worst games ever made!~ Alien 3 for the Genesis and SNES kicked butt, but just about anything else they touched was just unplayable at that time. Later came Batman Forever The Arcade Game, a Final Fight style Beat em' up for the PS1 and Sega Saturn, X-O Manowar/Iron Man in Heavy Metal, and then there was also the Excellent Alien Trilogy, which I might add is still one of the best launch titles I have ever seen. Again though, the 32 bit era of acclaim was plagued with TONS of horrible games Like NFL Quarterback club, WWF games no one cared about, terrible ECW games, and then there are all of the Wipeout rip offs they did that stunk. N64 saw some of the most promising times in their Video game properties, ie; Forsaken, a clone of Descent, Extreme G, and then came the very promising Shadowman, heralded by most gamers as the best game to come out of Acclaim. The Turok series did well until the 128 bit era, and I don't want to talk about that game at all. Shadowman 2econd coming was hardly a game compared to the first, and that marked the beginning of the end for Acclaim. BURNOUT couldn.t even save them. Criterion knew that the game franchise would sell well under a different company, so they left Acclaim and went with Electronic Arts. Acclaim was such a joke in the gaming market that the few games that did come out towards the end were not even looked at.
In short, Acclaim is damaged goods, and god help the company that took that name on.

Good morning.

If I was starting a brand new video game company, I'd buy the rights to Acclaim (as cheaply as possible)
simply for the name recognition.
The video game industry media would be more likely to write articles like...
"Acclaim's Back?"
"The Man Who Wanted More Acclaim"
and even...
"This Ain't Your Mama's Acclaim"
...than they would be to write:
"Who The Heck Is 'Joe Blow Games', And Why Should Anyone Care?"
simply for the name recognition.

Yeah, but the who the heck is Joe Blow, and why should I care are often the articles that spawn the most interrest. Not that the company is around anymore, but there was this little video game company named Psygnosis and they made this little game called Lemmings. They had no big budget backing when it came out, but the game caught on due to heavy interrest in the company itself. They later went on to create such hits as Wipeout, G Police, and the still amazing to thiss day, Wipeout XL. Really, every time people see that Titus has been sold and is making new games, no one says, "Hey, they could come out with something that rocks!" Nope, they look at it and say, "That crappy company that made Superman 64 and Blues Bros. 2000 is still around?" Followed by the next logical choice, "Why?"

I love those shots at Titus! Supes 64 might be the worst game ever.motorhead wrote:Yeah, but the who the heck is Joe Blow, and why should I care are often the articles that spawn the most interrest. I forgot about Forsaken ... that was a great game. And Burnout was loaded with potential, although there was/is a glut of racing games.
I agree with Greg about name recognition though. Most of the little fish are getting creamed by the big names. Not that there aren't hellacious success stories (RockStar for example), but the big companies are spending some coin and squeezing out the little fellas.

I remember them! Back when I had an Amiga, there was a game that I LOVED that was made by them (It wasn't Lemmings or any of the others you mentioned). Funny, I can't remember the game right now, but I very clearly recall the Psygnosis logo.motorhead wrote:Not that the company is around anymore, but there was this little video game company named Psygnosis...
Update: I remember the game now. Shadow Of The Beast III.
(I'm going to have to find an Amiga emulator now.)
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
The most confusing thing about the sale right now (at least as far as I can figure out) is the fact that another group, named Valiant Intellectual Properties LLC (VIP) filed for several of the trademarks days before the sale and did not even attend the auction.
The trademarks they claimed were Secret Weapons, Outcast, Rai and the Future Force, Deathmate, Quantum & Woody, Harbinger, Punx, Dr. Mirage, Eternal Warrior, Ninjak, Bloodshot, and the Visitor.
Here's a link to a Newsarama story on this : http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthr ... ht=VIP+LLC, and to the discussion here on the boards: viewtopic.php?t=5443.
Hope this helps clear the situation up a little!
