Tough call. Some of these rank amongst my most valuable, and some aren't worth the minute it took me to type them, but they're all important to me. I grew up either adoring or fantasizing about owning each of these.

2. Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1st new team/2nd Wolverine)

Oh, hell yeah. See, I didn't get IN to comics until I was nearly 18. So I don't have all those childhood memories of comics and seeing them on the wall and not being able to buy them, etc etc etc....shaxper wrote:ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:In no order:
Rom #47
WOW![]()
I've always wondered if there really was such a thing as a Rom fan...
But I DO know that the only comic I remember having as a child (a 12 year old, but still) was Rom #47. That cover....and that was really the turning point of the series....after that it was just exciting as hell, and one of the longer toy/comic tie ins in comic history (and the longest TOY ONLY tie in!)
I always say I have things I'd never sell, but if the price is right, I always do...I sold my Tec #103, Bats #58, lots of Bats over 70, etc etc etc. I won't tell you how many X-Men #'s 2-150 I've gone through (oddly enough, I've never owned a #1!)
But.....if I ever got down to a single set of Rom #1-#75....I wouldn't sell, unless it would be foolish not to. It is, hands down, the single most important comics series to me as a collector.
Man....Something Dire This Way Comes....indeed....

OK here goes my list:
1. Batman 11
2. Green Latern 76
3. Batman 251
4. Detective 400
5. Detective 395
6. Batman 232
7. Batman 244
8. Dark Knight Returns 1
9. Savage Sword of Conan 1
10. Detective 402
Yeah, I'm a Neal Adams guy, and I have a bit of an affinity for the crabby crusader. Stunning covers get me ever time, a great story helps as well. These books are all on display in my game room and I love showing them off.

well in that case, devoid of value....
1. Strangers in Paradise #1
2. everything else
i haven't collected comics in years and most of my collection was the holofoil crap that came out in the 90's. SIP as a whole, kicks major butt.

Yeah but he asked the question. I think he decides what you should judge by. I dont really get all warm and fuzzy over comics...at least not yet...Ax wrote:There are reasons that a comic book could make you feel "warm and fuzzy" other than artistic merit.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Ok, reiterating the rules:

forget condition.
what books make you feel warm and fuzzy based on their artistic merit alone? (editorial added)

<laughs>...I knew someone would have an issue with that statement unqualfied.Ax wrote: There are reasons that a comic book could make you feel "warm and fuzzy" other than artistic merit.
HOWEVER....I *believe* that that was cinlach's point to begin with, but say it wasn't....
Ok, Ax, you threw the guantlet down, now give me your other reasons.
FORGET CONDITION....FORGET VALUE....
So...it was the first comic you ever bought, it was given to you by your great uncle henry who fell over dead two seconds later, you had a letter printed in it, you had a favorite writer get a letter printed in it, whatever....those are ISOLATED cases, and certainly not something you could compose a top ten list out of.
Forgetting condition, and forgetting value, 99.9999999564% of why a comic's going to make someone feel warm and fuzzy is its artistic merit....whether the cover was just phenomenal, whether the story kicked *SQUEE*, whether the art is breathtaking to behold, whether the panel layout was stunning, whether the dialogue was nigh Tarantino-esque...
I mean, that IS the point, after all. People don't go to art galleries to look at how well the painting was mounted to the wall.

Honestly, most of what makes me feel warm and fuzzy is collectible aspects like rarity, deaths, and 1st appearances. Monetary resale value doesn't matter to me. I just feel warm and fuzzy when I hold a 1st issue or 1st appearance in my hands.
So I guess I'd say historical significance can be just as warm and fuzz-inducing as artistic value. Super Mario Brothers #1 is certainly not an artistically strong issue, nor is it particularly valuable (nor likely to become valuable) but its mere historical significance warms and fuzzifies me.

I don't think I would want to go back to an art gallery that hung their paintings crooked...ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote: I mean, that IS the point, after all. People don't go to art galleries to look at how well the painting was mounted to the wall.
Anyways, I like alot of my comics because they remind me of being a kid, sitting up in my room wasting an entire day reading comic books. And I also get a fuzzy feeling when I read comics from before my time because of how they were printed and how they have such terrible advertisements in them. Sure you are almost right, but I would like to see the study where you got the figure of 99.9999999564%. I think it actually works out to only 95.3%

First appearances are part of artistic merit. They are, after all, introduced as part of the story. Right...?shaxper wrote:ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Forgetting condition, and forgetting value, 99.9999999564% of why a comic's going to make someone feel warm and fuzzy is its artistic merit....whether the cover was just phenomenal, whether the story kicked *SQUEE*, whether the art is breathtaking to behold, whether the panel layout was stunning, whether the dialogue was nigh Tarantino-esque...Ax wrote: There are reasons that a comic book could make you feel "warm and fuzzy" other than artistic merit.

No one would care about a character's first appearance, or any following appearance, if the character had no artistic merit whatsoever (whatever, in the VAST SCOPE of artistic merit, the character represents.)
As far as 'the first comic published by a favorite company'....I'll give you that one.
