I thought so too. I was a retailer at the time and I remember talking to Weldon about it. (I don't remember his job title or full name, but he was a sales rep or marketing person or retailer relations type of guy at Valiant/Acclaim). I asked him about #4 and told him I really enjoyed the book and his response was something along the lines of, "Well, I don't think anybody else did."dellamorte wrote:Why not? I want to read it. It was a funny book and the world can always use more funny books.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Magnus in particular...the Giffen hate that is...dellamorte wrote:You are not alone, I loved Punx. I think the Giffen hate is in response to his handling of some of the other books (X-O in particular). So was I the only one that actually liked Punx? I did at the time of their release, anyway. I haven't read them since and my feel differently now.
Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?

Re: Worst Valiant Writer?
I'm just now reading this thread. Bob Layton's influence touched every character and plot after Shooter left. If there was a button for his name, I'd click it twice. And hope each click counted for 1,000 votes. The guy was a good businessman, but his story ideas left me wanting to go and read the latest "Cosmo" for better plot continuity.Heath wrote:So who do you think was the worst writer for Valiant? I'm talking strictly the "VH1" years. And I'm not saying these guys are bad writers overall (I may think that, but I'm not making that claim here). They may have even had a few bright spots at Valiant, but some of what they wrote for Valiant (or most/all of it) stank. Some much more so than others.
I'm sure there are some other names I'm missing.
My vote goes to Mike Baron. Every book he wrote for Valiant is pretty much unreadable. No exceptions. I'd almost say Ron Marz, but he was mainly limited to destroying XO. Mike Baron touched a lot more titles. I actually dreaded reading a book he wrote before I even opened the cover.

Keith Giffen. Now I've heard he's apparently some comic book bigshot, and he may write other books well, but what he did to Magnus hurt me. Russ Manning is probably spinning in his grave as to what happened to his creation.
Oh, and all of VH2. This Fabian guy, another supposed comic book bigshot, destroyed every single Valiant title. People stopped buying Valiant because they changed artists and stories overnight, and the stories were all horrendous.
Let us hope that the new owners do it right.

Yep, I agree with you. When Keith Giffen was first announced as the writer for Magnus, I was very excited. He really is a good writer - but his Valiant stuff REALLY disappointed me. But it didn't hurt me as much as what Marz did to XO.IMissValiant wrote:Keith Giffen. You're right. I should have qualified that and said "his Valiant stuff (besides PunX) REALLY disappointed me."xounitylord wrote:Come on now, Punx was good, it's just a shame we didn't get to see it finished, as it was funny. Magnus was a whole different story. I've been more excited about shopping for toilet paper than reading Keith's stuff.
