Eternal Warriors: Last Ride of the Immortals #2
Look, if you like Fred Van Lente’s writing then you’ll like this so I recommend you buy it. Me, I can’t see the appeal. FVL sense of humour is more miss than hit for me and I find it kills the tension from scenes. Enough with the quips, it’s mostly boring and tropey!
Confusing storyline at times, the immortal brother are tracking a version of themselves in the Wild West. Vexana (aka War Monger) is along for the ride and it’s her character I mostly have an issue with. When first introduced in the Valiant U she was an evil killer, FVL writes her as an okay gal who went off the rails when the boon happened. The interaction between her and Gilad is odd to say the least as Gilad only just finds out it’s his sister. FVL explains this by stating Gilad has no memory of pre boon.
As with all Alien books now, they’re desperate to cram continuity in and it’s usually way overdone. In issue #1 they had the Darques appear but it didn’t seem to serve a purpose
Here, there’s a throwback back to the Nergal tribe which FVL creates an origin story for Vexana, which I guess is passable. But it’s all over and done very quickly.
In the end Vexana stops the bad guy and Ivar kicks her into a bottomless pit! This is another lead into Resurgence.
The art by Alvaro Papagiani is reasonable enough but the faces could do with more detail. For example, Ivar says he’s 42 years old, but he looks about 19.
3/5 - readable but pretty average stuff
