Shadowman
I've been listening to the Blues Brothers albums this week, and it occurred to me that if they ever made a Shadowman streaming series or movie it would be great if Jack Boniface was a jazz player like in the original iteration.
With that in mind, which jazz songs would make a good inclusion in either's soundtrack? While some should be the original versions by the original singers and/or bands, which current singers and/or bands would you like to hear cover which jazz songs?
If Marvel can have Peter Quill/Star-Lord listen to '70s rock, VALIANT can have Jack listen to and play jazz, no matter how archaic or antiquated some might think it is

I couldn’t name a jazz singer or song if you put a gun to my head…it’s pretty niche. Best I can do is say that black fella who played trumpet with really puffed out cheeks. I bet Chiclo knows who he is

Dizzy Gillespie. He also was known for playing trumpets with a bell angled upward. My dad has played trumpet regularly for 60+ years so I grew up around that kind of stuff.Dallow Spicer1 wrote: Thu Aug 22, 2024 6:33 pm I couldn’t name a jazz singer or song if you put a gun to my head…it’s pretty niche. Devil’s Ball - Double
The Sweetest Taboo - Sade
Classical Gas - Mason Williams
Anything by Dr. Saxtrum
I enjoy jazz when I hear it but I don’t know a whole lot about it.

Re: Shadowman
Considering the question further, I can think of a couple of songs that are not jazz but might still be appropriate.
Son of a Witch - Justin Johnson; this is a dark, moody blues guitar song that would do well in a swamp scene.
Marie Laveau - Dr Hook and the Medicine Show; this song is about a swamp witch named Marie Laveau and tells the story of a man called Handsome Jack who comes to see her. The song was written by Shel Silverstein, known better for his children’s poetry than his lyrics or work for Playboy magazine. There is a very fun, loud version they recorded on Shel Silverstein’s houseboat. Alternately, Bobby Bare did a very country cover of the song.

Re: Shadowman
If the soundtrack to a Shadowman movie or streaming series also included R&B music, it would have to include this one.

In New Orleans that would be Louis Armstrong.Dallow Spicer1 wrote: Thu Aug 22, 2024 6:33 pm I couldn’t name a jazz singer or song if you put a gun to my head…it’s pretty niche. Best I can do is say that black fella who played trumpet with really puffed out cheeks. I bet Chiclo knows who he is![]()

Re: Shadowman
Satchmo was not known for puffing his cheeks up while playing the trumpet. That is pretty unusual for a trumpet player.Juki wrote: Sun Aug 25, 2024 4:54 pmIn New Orleans that would be Louis Armstrong.Dallow Spicer1 wrote: Thu Aug 22, 2024 6:33 pm I couldn’t name a jazz singer or song if you put a gun to my head…it’s pretty niche. Re: Shadowman
My friend (who plays trumpet) got to play in an ensemble with Dizzy Gillespie when he was in college. It was really cool. He said they had a backstage improve jam session where they all tried to outdo each other. I can't begin to imagine how cool that must have been.Chiclo wrote:Dizzy Gillespie. I just looked up his death date and couldn't have been him... I think it was Wynton Marsalis and I just confabulated it was Dizzy all these years.

I wonder if Bob Hall had a jazz playlist that he would listen to when he wrote/drew SM?ManofTheAtom wrote: Thu Aug 22, 2024 6:16 pm I've been listening to the Blues Brothers albums this week, and it occurred to me that if they ever made a Shadowman streaming series or movie it would be great if Jack Boniface was a jazz player like in the original iteration.

If Marvel can have Peter Quill/Star-Lord listen to '70s rock, VALIANT can have Jack listen to and play jazz, no matter how archaic or antiquated some might think it is
