Deadside: Magic or Technology?
I propose that Deadside in the VALIANT Universe is not that dissimilar from the planet that serves as the primary location in the Riverworld series of novels.
Check that link, and Google for further information.
In short, Riverworld is a place created by aliens where the souls of everyone who has ever lived and died are resurrected.
I posit that Deadside is no different.

What are souls?
Are souls different from minds?

Re: Deadside: Magic or Technology?
In VALIANT, souls would be the necromantic energy released when a person dies. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed.
I think the consciousness is different from the mind.
The mind contains the consciousness, but it is not the consciousness itself.

What are the rules of Deadside in the comics? Are there any issues where its been explained more than just, 'the place peoples' souls go when they die'?
Has Deadside been consistent across all the various VEI Shadowman comics? Do the VH2 and VH3 Deadsides function the same was as the VEI version? What about the Shadowman video game version?

Not sure. I don't have the first issue of the Deadside mini series so I didn't read the ones I have.Ryan wrote: Sat Jun 22, 2024 9:02 am What are the rules of Deadside in the comics? Are there any issues where its been explained more than just, 'the place peoples' souls go when they die'?

Hmm, maybe it's not that complicated? It's basically just Hell, right? Not everyone goes there when they die, only people who have character flaws?ManofTheAtom wrote: Sat Jun 22, 2024 10:55 amNot sure. I played the video game back in the day, read the Ennis issues and some of the Jamie Delano run, but not since they came out. I never got the Serge Clermont later issues, always heard they were good though. Definitely read at least the first 5 of the VEI Justin Jordan series. But I can't remember if any of them laid out the rules of Deadside

I don't think we ever saw any indication of another afterlife, or morality playing a role in who goes where. There was just Deadside. The Jordan VEI issues of Shadowman may have included some information about it, I just don't recall what it was offhand.Ryan wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 10:37 amHmm, maybe it's not that complicated? Cool yeah I could be wrong, I forgot that everyone who died went to Deadside. Honestly don't remember much about those issues. There must be some rules as to who can travel between the worlds (only Shadowman?) and what the conditions have to be for someone to 'escape' Deadside.ManofTheAtom wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 11:52 am I don't think we ever saw any indication of another afterlife, or morality playing a role in who goes where. Too bad the big VEI fans either don't seem very interested in the lore or just don't post here anymore

That would answer all the questions for sureManofTheAtom wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 2:49 pm The Deadside Intelligence Mechanism is a sentient magical computer and database housed in a gigantic wooden monolith that can be found somewhere in the Deadside. According to Doctor Silk it has "all the answers to life and death -- all the secrets of the universe! Ultimate knowledge! Immortality! Cures for cancer? Knowledge of the Afterlife? It's where magic and science meet."

I know Ninjak went there and got back without having to die to do it.Ryan wrote: Sun Jun 23, 2024 3:33 pmCool yeah I could be wrong, I forgot that everyone who died went to Deadside. From the African roots to returning the mask to the face, overall it felt more like what Shadowman should have felt like from the beginning.
No Spider-Aliens, no saxophone's up the *SQUEE*, no confrontations with the bad guy in the bathroom for the sake of being "out there", and no stupid DJ job.
Serge's interpretation of Shadowman, from the hero to the villains to the mythology, was unique and in my opinion the only true version of the character.
In fact those are the only VH 2 comics I'd consider re-reading with the foreknowledge that they won't make me wanna bang my head against the wall, unlike everything else from VH 2 (well, Bloodshot was pretty good too).

I'm a Bob Hall version loyalist, Zero and the game version had some cool elements though. In a perfect world the Hall version and Zero could both exist in Valiant's New Orleans.
Hall and Serge working together would have resulted in a great interpretation of Shadowman.
