Magnus in Gold Key and Valiant

Post by magnusr »

Another thread mentioned that elements from the Gold Key series of Magnus were reused in Valiant, so I got curious just how much it is.

In the general setting I see at least 1-A, Leeja, Senator Clane, president Claiburne, major Timbuc, Outsiders, the one thousand, weather control, Danae, Sam, junko, Willo(w) Talltree and professor Talltree.

As for the villains:
H8 (from 4000AD 1) is mentioned in Magnus 26
Mekman (fram 4000 AD 2 and 11) serves Malevs in Magnus 25 and on, is mentioned in Magnus 26
Xyrkol (from 4000 AD 3, 7 and 21) is the villain of Magnus 9, 10, 11, is mentioned in Magnus 26
T-1 (from 4000 AD 4) is shown in Magnus 0 and 1 and affects Steel Nation, is mentioned in Magnus 26
Talpa (from 4000 AD 6) occurs in Magnus 15 and 16, is the villain of Magnus 17, is mentioned in Magnus 26
Malev 6 (from 4000 AD 7, 21 and 24) is central in the Malev wars
Nadmot (from 4000 AD 9) is not reused
Dr Noel (from 4000 AD 13, 19, 21 and 24) is the villain of Magnus 12, is mentioned in Magnus 26, occuring in Magnus 27, 28, 35 (also a possible ancestor is shown in Turok 6)
Mogul Badur (from 4000 AD 15) is not reused
Gophs (from 4000 AD 16) and the goph level are reused a lot
Sirius creatures (from 4000 AD 17) are used in Psi-Lords
V'ril Trent (from 4000 AD 18) is used in Predator vs Magnus
Bunda (from 4000 AD 20) is not reused
Events from 4000 AD 23, 25, 26, 27 and 28 are not reused

Awesome job

It's amazing how many Russ Manning concepts and characters were used in Valiant.

It shows how great those Manning creations were. People forget how much early Valiant was just Gold Key comics made more mature and updated for the 90's readers. Combined with Shooter's Harbinger concept that he'd had for a number of years already.

Don't forget that Talpa was who Magnus was fighting when Unity started in Magnus 15 and 16, then they have their full battle in 17.

Also Dr. Noel was the main villain in the Lost Land in the great Magnus 12.

:thumb: Another Manning character I would have loved to see appear in Magnus is Captain Johner. I wonder if there were any plans for him, since they went to the trouble of recoloring and reprinting those stories?

Mogul Badur could have been updated and used I think. Even some of the characters from the non-Manning issues had some potential if they were updated a bit.

Not that it says much, but the afterword refers to Captain Johner as a series "that stands wonderfully on its own".

Agree.
