Magnus 8 Interior Page - $800
A recent auction I was watching.
David Lapham pencils/Kathryn Bolinger w/Maria Beccari inks; Rai page 3; 1992; image size 10" x 15"
Rare pre-Unity Valiant art!
From the Rai #4 flipbook, attached to Magnus #8, featuring the story 'Supernova, Invasion part 8,' written by Valiant founder Jim Shooter. Great early work from Lapham, who would go on to stardom with his self published Stray Bullets series, featuring Magnus and Rai. Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition.

You know, I lost track of the Comiclink auctions ending recently and it is really too bad how poor their website is with no tracking. I would have paid more for these pieces. Seller would have been happy. I have written and even talked to them about it and they know they are doing a disservice to both sellers and buyers yet they have no intention of changing. Nutso.

I always just put a small bid on any items I wanna watch.. your going to be outbid anyway.. and if you are not. I got the item way cheaper than what I thought it would go fornycjadie wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 12:32 am You know, I lost track of the Comiclink auctions ending recently and it is really too bad how poor their website is with no tracking. Congrats on the new owner
I haven't watched early Valiant art prices for a long time. Last piece I bought was back in 2017. Has there been a price surge or is this a one-off? Guess it has to do with pre-Unity plus Lapham.

This is unfortunately not a one-off. Not sure if it should be called a surge or a steady increase?iggy101us wrote: Mon Dec 11, 2023 10:07 pm I haven't watched early Valiant art prices for a long time. Re: Magnus 8 Interior Page - $800
Valiant art is higher than it ever has been before. I'm selling a bunch of my pieces on another thread, at about the cost I paid for them. I've sold a lot. On general, the prices range from 1/3 to 1/2 of what they are going for now. It's kind of bananas.
And at the other end of the scale, Dinesh has been buying the original #1 Valiant covers (e.g. Shadowman 1, etc.). These are ranging from $20-60K.
He bought the Unity 1 cover. No idea what that one went for. BWS. Must have been big.

Those early Rai pages are just full of action and violence. This level of violence was not seen in Marvel and DC at the time. One of the many things that made Valiant so unique and memorable. Here are 3 pages in sequence:
Rai #2 page 2. Pencilled by Joe St Pierre, inked by Charles Barnett III.

Rai #2 page 3. Pencilled by Joe St Pierre, inked by Charles Barnett III.

Rai #2 page 4. Pencilled by Joe St Pierre, inked by Charles Barnett III.

Re: Magnus 8 Interior Page - $800
No doubt. Image comics and everyone else since the 90s have done a ton of over the top violence. But the way those early Valiant comics portrayed violence with the straightforward artwork and in the same little square panel as every other part of the story always felt more realistic and sophisticated to me. Like the difference The Godfather and a violent exploitation b-movie.iggy101us wrote: Tue Dec 12, 2023 9:58 pm Those early Rai pages are just full of action and violence. Great sequence. Super readable even without the text and exciting without Image-style flashiness. The lost art of straightforward action-adventure comics.iggy101us wrote: Tue Dec 12, 2023 9:58 pm Rai #2 page 2. Pencilled by Joe St Pierre, inked by Charles Barnett III.

I do the same thing at Comiclink - I try to remember to log in on the opening night of each major auction to get low bids in on stuff I’m interested in following (so much easier to go into the “my bids” section after to see everything in one spot). Wish they had an option for just watching/tracking as well.corey wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 9:35 amI always just put a small bid on any items I wanna watch.. your going to be outbid anyway.. and if you are not.
