Since I seem to be in conspiracy theory mode
I just realized all my posts today are a little scooby doo, so I'm going to double down!
Will Alien books hire Jim Shooter to write?
If not, why? Could it be that Shooter is actually the bad guy Massarsky made him out to be when he pushed him out of Valiant? Dark Horse, VEI, that religion comic, Slow City Blues etc all hired and fired him. Maybe he really is terrible?

So we're just going to ignore the 10 years he ran Marvel that produced the greatest run in superhero comics since Lee/Kirby/Ditko and the formation of Valiant, including the main storylines that VEI used in the reboot? Ok, cool, we get it you hate Shooter. Was he short with you at a con or something?syzhang28 wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 11:06 am I just realized all my posts today are a little scooby doo, so I'm going to double down!

Re: Since I seem to be in conspiracy theory mode
Shooter created some great comics. He was a good editor. Has he done anything good in the last 25 years? The Dark Key stuff was alright but just a rehash of VALIANT. Everything else felt phoned in.Ryan wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 4:57 pmSo we're just going to ignore the 10 years he ran Marvel that produced the greatest run in superhero comics since Lee/Kirby/Ditko and the formation of Valiant, including the main storylines that VEI used in the reboot? Re: Since I seem to be in conspiracy theory mode
For some reason, I'm thinking of Michael Jordan. He won 6 championships 30 years ago. He was an executive for a basketball team 20 years ago.
If someone decided to hire Michael Jordan right now, knowing that he was once the greatest basketball player of all time, with the hope that he could match or exceed what he did 30 years ago on the basketball court, even though he'd be playing for a team so small that most people in the NBA have never heard of it ... would anyone expect him to do well?

Re: Since I seem to be in conspiracy theory mode
That's a fair opinion. I still prefer a mediocre Shooter comic over an Image comic or any number of 'modern' writers who's only trick is being pretentiously cryptic, or have a few bits of clever dialogue and need 5 issues to tell a basic story. At least a Shooter comic is an actual story. But I get what you're saying, I actually think his best writing is when he has other people to bounce ideas off of. Pre-Unity Valiant and Broadway is far and away his best writing IMO, when he was collaborating with other people on idea generation and whatnot.Chiclo wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:24 pm Shooter created some great comics. Writing isn't an art form that's dependent on physical athletic ability, but I don't disagree with you. I'm not (and I don't think anyone is) arguing for Shooter to write all the Valiant books. I just find it a bit off when the hardcore VEI fans feel the need to constantly diminish what he's accomplished, especially when it comes to Valiant.greg wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:50 pm For some reason, I'm thinking of Michael Jordan. Re: Since I seem to be in conspiracy theory mode
Another good comparison is Stan Lee. Ravage 2099 (1992) was only 31 years removed from the creation of the Marvel Universe, and I remember it being a total dud. Stan's verbose writing felt anachronistic in 92. We're now 32 years removed from the creation of the Valiant Universe.greg wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:50 pm For some reason, I'm thinking of Michael Jordan. He won 6 championships 30 years ago. Unlikely, but who knows? We're crazy. Who knows what the future holds? I don't know what happened there first Valiant or later on when they brought him back. There were so many versions of everything..syzhang28 wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 11:06 am I just realized all my posts today are a little scooby doo, so I'm going to double down!

I happened to meet Shooter when I went to a convention, I think last year or the year before. Just there as a fan, it was www.superjerseyexpo.com - I had the old-school Valiant shirt on, which he let me know he designed, and I thanked him for creating Valiant!
Maybe he will stop by the NYCC booth, and something magic could happen.

Now I am imagining a scenario where MotA is trying to draw Shooter to the Alien Books booth like Marty McFly trying to get his parents together in 1955. Or maybe more subtlely like that one movie - the Humanity Bureau? Something like that.daniellew61 wrote: Fri Oct 06, 2023 8:14 amUnlikely, but who knows? We're crazy. Who knows what the future holds? I'm of the opinion that if Shooter was ever to write another VALIANT comic it should be something along Marvel's The End series and VEI's Q2: The Return of Quantum & Woody.
He should be allowed to wrap up the stories of the original iterations of the VALIANT characters the right way, not whatever magic ink nonsense Unity 2000 was.

I'm thinking more like a finite wrap-up series. 12 issues maybe? Just focused on the characters that existed when he was there, so like not Ninjak and such.Ryan wrote: Fri Oct 06, 2023 10:53 amShooter and Lapham on a new ongoing Harbinger series set in VH1. Definitely Adjustment Bureau starring Emily Blunt and Matt Damon. Great Movie.
Also, Philip K. Dick probably knew things we didn't know. His writing, in hindsight, kinda seems more prophetic than crazy.
I often wonder how many crazy people just see things the rest of us can't.
