Reasons I love Valiant

Post by DawgPhan »

Well I was sittin' on the can last night reading XO #4 and I was thinking about, amoung other things, why I like Valiant. Of course everyone is going to say story and art...But I was thinking what else drives me to these books...and I came up with....Price....these books are cheap...I am sit on the can and read any book in my collection and not worry about it...If the worst happened and I dropped my comic into the can I could replace it for little money. well that is a big reason I like Valiant....Why do you like it?

I think why I love valiants would be the creators were passionate towards the characters and still love valiants. That is evident with all the board participation from the creators/editors and why there is a new comic in the works Bloodshot 2004 (a valiantcomics.com production of course)

Why I love Valiant:

1. Tightly woven universe with major emphasis on continuity. I mean, the entire future of the Valiant Universe is revealed in Rai #0, and they actually adhere to it!

2. Character-driven stories. It's rarely about the bad guy with the unstoppable super-power. You get the feeling that these are real people in extraordinary situations.

3. The fact that it's possible to own and read every issue.

I think that one added word will help: Unity.

The Valiant universe HAS that realistic element to it. Everything is connected, everything matters, everything fits.

Years later, I still look at this and see a religious outlook. Call me crazy, the valiant universe taught me how to look at things around me.

I think the nostalgia factor is pretty big for me. I remember when I was 11 or 12 I started collecting comics. My brother and I just got into the hobby and we couldn't understand why these comics with very simple (we called it 'gay' back then) art were so valuble. Back then we really didn't read them too much so I never really knew how amazingly cool the stories are. We were easily impressed with all the marvel and early image art that appealed to easily to prepubecent males.

So now I read these early valiants, I love the old-school feel. The art, the stories (expecially Shooter's of course) are delightfully heraldic. Plus, sometimes, I just flip through my Valiant longboxes (I have 3 now, almost full) and look at my Harbinger #1's and just smile. This book was on the wall at a comic shop in Los Gatos for like $300. Now I have 2!!! Hahaha.

<smirk>...I know the shop whereof you speak. ;)

And I love Valiant because it made me a relatively decent amount of money, so much so that I was able to pay my first semester of college (Fall, 1993) with my duplicates. Of course, I've replaced those by multiples by now, but twas a lot of fun back then.

Course....I also missed buying the 'second print' Eternal Warrior #1 for cover price, too.....hey...ya can't win 'em all.

(of course, I also love Valiant because of Harbinger and Solar, and how amazing those two books are.)

Yeah, you know, back then when gold second prints were all the rage at Marvel....and lo and behold, half the print run of 5,000 copies of the ET #1 gold were mistakenly shipped to the West Coast (EW #1 before the first or second gold, depending on who you talk to), and WITH a cover price (along with A&A #0) on it....many retailers just assumed it was a second print, put it out on the shelves...and that was that.

When I found out about it, I could have pooped a brick, I was so mad.

Oh, one of my fav retailers also put out all 13 Gen 13 #1 variants out for cover price....missed those, too. :)

I started collecting Marvels back in 1968, & got out of collecting comics around 1976 (yes, I bought GS X-Men #1, Hulk #181,....all the keys, right off the stands---I remember how excited I was when Fantastic Four reached number #100--classic Kirby cover!--, followed by Spider-Man #100 the next year or so).

When I renewed my interest in collecting comics in 1991, Valiant reminded me of the great stories Marvel used to have. I could get more bang for my buck with a Valiant comic than a dozen issues of any Image title. Marvel & DC still put out more crap than quality, but early Image suffered badly in the story dept., even Spawn.

Simply put....I collected Valiant because they were (& still are) very good stories & art (up until they sold to Acclaim---from there it's not all crap, but it gets spotty).---Steve G

back in the 90s the only preunity book I owned was a 'sat on' xo #6
I love valiant because

1- I get to own books that were worth $$$$ when I was a kid and even more important is the nostalga from owning books that were in wizards top 10 for years.

Once I started getting those old preunities I started reading them and realised that I loved valiant because
2- the writing is amazing and the continuity is so interlaced. Add great colours and art and I can't stop reading:)

but today I love valiant because
3 - the community thats keeping the books alive is one of the best online. I have seen that up close over the past two days with the magnus 0 vcvss thing.
