Btw, I liked both of those titles. Gen Zero was good / great, War Mother was okay.

Re: Psi-Lords in June
I really did not like Gen Zero. I love FVL, but a Harbinger title was not the "right" fit for him. It was not the right fit for Rafer Roberts either. Harbinger is a fairly deep and serious story, and lighthearted humor is/was the wrong feel.
War Mother was fine; it simply needed to be more and to at some point, connect with the world of 4002 A.D. and expand. Ana needed to be killing robots (etc.) with Rai, Gilad, Sai, Neela, and future Bloodshot.
I think for Psy-Lords, it is new and unknown, so FVL can really run with it without crushing a ton of fan expectations since we do not really know the story or tone. It could be an Ivar, Timewalker or Archer & Armstrong style story that we all fall in love with.

I DO feel as if the red-headed character works at a 4002 A.D. Starbucks as a barista who condescendingly educates me about how capitalism is wrong and how we need to become a socialist democracy because of income inequality, sadness, and the enlightenment he received in a yoga class once.
He will tell me how to fix the worlds problems -- yet somehow fail to serve me the Salted Caramel Cold Foam Cold Brew that I ordered, because coffee is more complex than world problem.

It's possible that you are exactly right, DBS, and that's why the writer made him a prisoner on another planet. He's sick of that (real-life) guy. Prison break stories usually kill off most of the prisoners.Chiclo wrote:DirtbagSailor wrote:I DO feel as if the red-headed character works at a 4002 A.D. This red-haired character's design is very hipster, which I'm not totally into to be honest, but maybe he's going to end up being there personifying the hipster stereotype as an ongoing joke for FVL to use for comedy effect, as he goes around telling all the aliens how they need to get along whilst being constantly attacked from all sides or something, I can imagine him doing that.
I've loved all VEI's sci-fi stuff to date so I'm hoping that this is going to be every bit as good as XO and Divinity/Infinity have been, and am looking forward to giving the first issue a look

Tank = Space Faith. Maybe not in in powers, but as the groups base, their rock? Wasn't that Faith in Harbinger?
Hazard = Space Cronus. "Hazard's power set is very keyed to lifeforce — which can be both protective and ruthless in its drive for survival" "Cronus..... powers allow him to speed up the body's self-repairing process, making him an effective healer. This power can also be reversed and he can cause people to have instantaneous organ failure." Hmm, seem remarkably similar
Artisan = Space Owen Cho. Sure, Artisan is a cocky *SQUEE*, and Owen was pretty meek, but their power sets are pretty darn similar, Artisan creates things out of thin air, Owen pulled things out of thin air too, just not what he always needed.
Beacon may be the only one that could be considered new.

Psi-Lords in June
You guys are high-larious! In an effort to be more clever than the last, you battle to outdo one another on snarky comments of the character designs. And my desperate plea to you is....please keep it up!
Why? Because editorial definitely listen in on the boards, and some of these outrageous snap judgements almost certainly get mentioned at creative meetings. It has already been shown on this thread that at least one of you will type an opinion before you can even expend the effort to read a caption.
So to me, it is entertaining that a slightly overweight red-headed Russian cosmonaut code-named “Tank” is fondly reminiscent to several of you as the prototypically-cliched barista at Starbucks.
But at Valiant, this is a serious play-testing trial for some of the possible groupthink that goes on in dedicated fandom. Legitimate critique or not, if some here can’t accept a character due to some petty prejudice at the design stage, they can rethink and reimagine some aspect of the character so as not to elicit your Pavlovian disgust.
So please, by all means, keep it up. It totally helps Valiant!

Generation Zero in Space.
We've got a discount Green Lantern, a lame version of Wraith from Apex Legends, Hipster Jesus, and a character who's on the spectrum... the electromagnetic spectrum.
Anyone else notice that the female character's personalities described them as being on the extremes of emotionless and emotional. Doesn't that mind you of Starfire, and Raven's dynamic from the New Teen Titans? Hazard sounds like an anime tsundere and she feels like a DeviantArt OC from the early 2000s. Does she listen to Linkin Park and cut herself, because "YOUR NOT TEH BOSS OF ME MOM!" I'm guessing FLV was watching a lot of crap anime when he came up with her character, and decided he needed his token waifu for this book. Beacon looks like she's stretching to jump on top of FLV's soap box.
So Tank is an anti-fascist? Wasn't that the gimmick Monica Jim randomly adopted in Generation Zero? The one she randomly shouted to show how edgy she is? Is the Gyre a private prison funded by corporate alien lobbyist that profits from cheap prison labor? Is Tank going to lead a revolution to legalize space weed, and free his fellow space stoners so they can be free from the space fascists who won't let them get high. Hey more power to him if Tank wants to fight for his right to trip balls on that sweet sweet cosmic chronic. The space government ain't got no right to lock him up for smoking some of that dirty plutonian ganja. Tank is just out there fighting for us, and we're here comparing him to a filthy neckbeard. Shame on us. Weed is for the people. It's the people's weed. #freetank #peoplesweed #spaceweed #endprivatespaceprisons #neckbeardrepresentation

So, their power (Psi-Focus) sets are: Creation, Omniscience, Willpower, and Lifeforce? ...and they're looking for "god"?
Obviously, they have to join Psi-forces and Psi-focus their Psi-selves into Psi-Voltron the Psi-Lord-of-Lords!
They're just going to have to keep searching for Patrick Duffy, to use as a leg.

Re: Psi-Lords in June
So, from the character descriptions it's looking as though the characters are going to be driven heavily by their emotions: Artisan's need to justify his existence by always being liked by everyone and Hazard's extreme mood swings. I guess it'll be interesting to see if FVL successfully builds this element of the story meaningfully, or whether it completely fails and ends up reading like a teenage temper tantrum in full swing.
Not appreciating the 'Psi-Focus' descriptions. 'Omniscience': look that up in the dictionary and see if it makes *ANY* sense at all when you attempt to match it up to the description of Beacon's power set. 'Willpower': Not even sure what that means in relation to Tank's vague power set description and flavour quote.
I'm hoping this one is great in execution, but right now I'm not really sure what I'm expecting to find within the pages of issue 1, considering this weird article

This is what I saw with the preview art as well. I don't know what they were thinking there. Psi-Lords in June
All of these acerbic critiques are really great, and many sound ever-so learned! But what I am really looking forward to is when we reach the end of the first arc. This will be the very moment when the miraculous and unlikely effort of the prison break culminates in....Surprise! an empty cell, and your four intergalactic crusader hipsters regain the memory keys to activate their distinctive barista powers to become (duh-da-da-daaaahhh—) The Psi-Lords!!! Oh, the rage! So many of you will again loudly proclaim “never again!”
But I truly have no fear, for you will soon drift back here to hate this Valiant thing that you love. And much more productively, to unwittingly contribute as frontline advance opinion research data for those Valiant editors lurking right here on these here boards, where, you understand, you will be helping them to reduce the tendency to trip simple reader prejudices in their final product. And the more articulate of you will continue to drop fascinating references to other comic characters and situations, and wax ecstatic the derivative-ness of these preposterous character designs! Oh!, once mighty Valiant! So far you have fallen!
I just wish I could be a fly on the wall of the weekly Valiant creative meetings, where Bollers meekly asks Meyers “but...how did they get that—out of THAT?” and Meyers resignedly but angrily responds with his rote “I don’t know either, but change it, will you? Get Fred on the phone NOW!!” through clenched teeth, nearly biting off his cigar.

Re: Psi-Lords in June
Honestly, I really do hope that Pat-Lords is a hit.
