Wow. I mean, you knew it was bound to happen given his age and recent health issues, but damn. No doubt the most influential person ever in the industry. And so well know...his face from the cameos and appearances in TV and movies, his voice introducing those Saturday mornign cartoons...RIP, Stan the Man! EXCELSIOR!

Re: Stan Lee died today
So it was today...
What can one regular person say about the Man?
Just a huge Thanks for making the lives of millions of people around the world, specially children, much funner and fulfilled, for decades.
That still seems small.
Stan Lee. Thank You.

I don't know if his pop-culture influence can ever be topped. So rarely in modern history does a creative force become such a celebrity. Hitchcock, Orson Wells, Stephen King, Speilberg...Not sure any of them ultimately will have the influence of Lee accross so many mediums.ShadowTuga wrote:So it was today...![]()

Well said. Stan Lee is probably up their with Shakespeare. Generations will feel his influence, quote, and mis-credit him...and misquote him. I didn't expect to hear this today. But then again, even when it's expected it's terrible. This guy definitely had a full life though - although it's a shame what was going on surrounding it in his last couple of years.
I've got a couple nice things auto'd by Stan in official capacities - some CGC Sig Series and a CBLDF print that was pretty limited. I'm glad to have them now, maybe more than I was before.

I agree that Stan is part of that small handful of people who by themselves, basically changed the world as we know it.WrathOfArmstrong wrote:Well said. Without Stan Lee going "original" when it came to writing that first FF book, there would be no "comics" as we know it. Without Spider-Man being as out of the box as it was (a teenage super hero was not the norm, to say the least), we would not be here (in a comic book forum from another company), literally. There would be no Valiant, no Image, no nothing. Comics would have died by the early/mid 60s, with DC and the oldies like Fawcett and Charlton being "comics" by themselves, and this was just a silly old-man's thing that was never taken seriously.
Stan did not invent comics by himself, but his work with Kirby and Ditko made'em relevant for older kids and an integral part of the youth culture of the 60s. He built something that is beyond one man, one generation, his creations gained life by themselves and the whole world got a lot more fun. He made the "comics are not just for kids" thing. There's no comparison between what DC was doing in '62 and what Marvel brought to the table. It's not just being in the right era at the right place, its riding the wave of creativity and "make it your home". What the Marvel bullpen created in their first years is unbelievable. Modern mythology on a monthly basis.
If anyone here actually never read anything written by Stan Lee himself (his stories were "before our time", for most of the fans here) my sincere advice would be to just go to any digital comics store and grab a copy of FF#51 and discover "This Man, This Monster", a story with 52 years already. It is probably my favourite Stan Lee comic, and I don't even like the FF that much. It's just that terrific of a tale, and a perfect example of how our moral compass as comics' fans was shaped by this man and his peers.
And if you ask random Joe who said that "with great power..." they will probably say 2 huge political or military historical figures before they quit and make that "say what?" look when you tell them the origin of the phrase. That's crazy.

Re: Stan Lee died today
Stan popularized the phrase, but he didn't originate it. In much the same way, he didn't invent superheroes (nor has anyone said he did, but it's likely some in the general public would guess that he did), but many phrases and characters that predate him do owe him appreciation for renewed popularity.ShadowTuga wrote:And if you ask random Joe who said that "with great power..." they will probably say 2 huge political or military historical figures before they quit and make that "say what?" look when you tell them the origin of the phrase. Re: Stan Lee died today
This thread title puts me in a Camus state of mind:
"Stan Lee died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don't know. I got a telegram from the home: 'Father deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours.' That doesn't mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday."

I stand corrected- not origin, but the "fame" of the phrase.greg wrote:Stan popularized the phrase, but he didn't originate it. Also, as an aside, did any of you read comics at an age where you don't know/actually care for anything about creators and what stories were written by who, etc? I was 6 when I started reading Marvel and due to the rectangular box on top of each 1st page (Stan Lee apresenta/presents:), I actually thought for what appears now as a long time, that the Man wrote/draw or at least co-wrote/co-drew every. Single. Story.

Re: Stan Lee died today
Yes! In fact, I didn't care at all who did what when I was collecting comics as a teenager. It didn't matter... including Valiant. I didn't know anyone's name, except maybe Joe Quesada, but only because it was almost always the answer to the question "Who signed this?"ShadowTuga wrote:Also, as an aside, did any of you read comics at an age where you don't know/actually care for anything about creators and what stories were written by who, etc?
Even though I was a huge fan of Superman since age 2, I didn't know the names "Siegel" or "Shuster" until I was in my 20s, and I couldn't have named any real person connected with Superman who wasn't Christopher Reeve. (But, for that one name, it's Reeve, not Reeves, people.)

I recognize that favorite artists and favorite writers are likely to have created something else that a person might also like, but I've never been a fan of the "upsell" technique... even when it was just in the back of a children's book as "other titles by this publisher". It's funny to me how I can remember all the way back to frequently thinking the pre-school equivalent of "Who gives a crap?"

Lee is as prolific as any American author in our history but you will never hear him get the credit for it. He entertained, educated, and taught more kids self-value than Faulkner, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Twain, Fitzgerald, Melville, etc.

Agreed, however, kids who are forced to read Stan Lee in the future will scoff, complain they're bored, and refuse to do any studying in favor of whatever passes for entertainment at that point. Lee will join the names you've listed... because forcing kids to do anything is the best way to ensure they hate that thing.greatbrandino11 wrote:Lee is as prolific as any American author in our history but you will never hear him get the credit for it. Re: Stan Lee died today
I dont necessarily agree with that. I was forced to study history and now I love that and teach it for a living. I agree faulkner, melville, etc. are not well liked by most kids, but not because they're forced to read them. It's because theyre not relevant (or arent seen that way) to the youth. Granted they may not necessarily enjoy reading FF#51...even I struggle with a lot od Silver Age books...but I could have them read Harbinger or Imperium, which wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Stan Lee, Marvel and the X-Men. That discussion could lead them back to Lee and his influence, which they find very relevant with the MCU films like Avengers and Black Panther.greg wrote:Agreed, however, kids who are forced to read Stan Lee in the future will scoff, complain they're bored, and refuse to do any studying in favor of whatever passes for entertainment at that point. Let's face it, teenagers would scoff and say they were bored if you took them to a piano recital for a school field trip. It's what they do.
