Are the covers better now?
Fred Pierce in an interview said "The industry is telling us that the covers are better than they’ve ever been". Is this true? Here are some recent covers from DMG/Valiant that I don't think we would have seen from the Dinesh/Warren Valiant.

Re: Are the covers better now?
yeah, they're no 'textless' DC covers, that's for sure...
it's kind of scary how bad the bloodshot ones are... XO is at least a fun style that isn't trying to be taken seriously. But I wouldn't run out for any of them, and would be disappointed if one was in my pull box.
I don't like the world of variants to begin with, but if there is going to be a variant that I pick up it has to be a) amazing and b) from an artist not normally associated with a title but has their own personal following.

based on cover I wouldn't even give those a look in a shop...any of them.
Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?

Re: Are the covers better now?
Nope I dont agree. There are some xo covers that were shown a few weeks ago that I think are superb. But the ones you shown here are horrible.
Dmg has no brownie points as of yet in my eyes.
Their big redeemer is thease 4 new issues coming out soon.

Re: Are the covers better now?
Valiant really needs to stop smelling it's own farts. The covers certainly aren't better now. Nothing is.
They need to lay off all the news items showing so-and-so being promoted from the janitor room to copy boy. It's pointless and meaningless. They should only be announcing on page talent not every Tom, Dick and Harry that works in the building. Dial down the hyperbole and just focusing on putting out bs-free comics. Admitting that things are "off" and not perfect would go a long way towards me believing they aren't trying to feed me a line. The thing I love abut Valiant comics is they don't insult my intelligence, but lately every news article and announcement does.

I think this one is pretty spectacular, but as a whole they haven't been as explosive.

I know it's sounds incredibly negative but they put out more announcements about internal promotions than actual comics. Maybe they should just become a PR firm?

I see some really amazing Massafera and Suayan covers. I also see some really fun experimentive cover artists. However, the covers across the board have never been poorer. I rarely see an amazing Faith cover. Ninja-K hasn't been great. The logos are getting larger and larger on the books.

Even some of the Britannia covers made by top-notch artists have been uninspiring, like David Mack.

Re: Are the covers better now?
Even some of the variant covers previously have been meh...Eternity #1 1:40 variant I thought was amazing, still one of my favorite Valiant covers, but then Eternity #2-#4 1:40 variant covers were like somebody decided we should make ones that look like we did a bunch of acid. They didn't represent the pages inside or much of anything, and I quickly passed on those variants.
I will say Valiant has been much better about it than other companies, but one of my biggest gripes of the last decade is covers that are basically a big pin-up of the title character and in no way represent the story inside (spider-man is the fricking worst offender on this front). How many covers do I need to see of a giant image of Bloodshot or X-O. Sure, covers of the 70's, 80's, and 90's were sometimes cheesy, but many of the key issues were memorable for me because the cover had an image that portrayed the story inside. Now when talking to people and they're like "oh which one was that?" I feel like an idiot saying "you know, the one with Shadowman front and center on the cover"....and they look at you like 'oh, okay, that could be one of I don't know....all of them"

This is the exception I was mentioning. There is another one in that release thats the bomb to me. Xo suit looks all fluid. Might be an earth infront of him.TheeBaldMoose wrote:I think this one is pretty spectacular, but as a whole they haven't been as explosive.

Re: Are the covers better now?
Yeah, I haven't been too excited about the covers lately. I used to pick up original art for Valiant covers pretty regularly, and it's been quite a while since I've made a purchase. There are still good covers coming out, although it's often artists that I already own a piece from, so I'm less likely to jump on those. Aligning more of the covers with story content would be a plus for me.

Re: Are the covers better now?
Is that first Bloodshot cover on the original post for real or is that a joke? I am talking about the one where Bloodshots arm is cut off.

Yes. It's real. This is my point. I don't think Dinesh, Warren, Hunter etc would have let this get published.Summydad1 wrote:Is that first Bloodshot cover on the original post for real or is that a joke? I am talking about the one where Bloodshots arm is cut off.

Re: Are the covers better now?
I do like the police line up Psi-Lords cover. The same goes for the Punk Mambo Cover shown. But I have no idea how that 2nd Psi-Lords Cover made the cut. Also not good is the Jothikumar BRS cover. I really like about 2/3 of these covers, though.

Re: Are the covers better now?
The punk mambo isn't so bad. The other three are hideous. That second cover is laughable. I am certainly no artist or marketing genius but how is that supposed to sell on the rack? It's so bad, it would effect the books immediately surrounding it on the display.

Re: Are the covers better now?
I kind of feel that the Fallen World and Punk Mambo covers weren't planned as covers, but someone just took a bunch of various elements and added some effects in Photoshop.
