This should bring the books out of the woodwork as it is not that rare of an issue in 9.8.

The book really jumped right at the close from the around a $100 to $465 (I had a snipe in for what I thought was a crazy $455) to $1,035.

The winning bigger obviously had a very high snipe/really wanted the book. The other snipper had 21 feedback.

My guess is two people had crazy high snipes. Suspect the winner was shocked at the price he is to pay. Either that or there are two people who want this book at any price and one has it.

Congrats to the seller with one of the two desperate to own the book buyers out of the market I can’t see this price being sustained. I can’t imagine there are even many people willing to pay what I put in as my snipe (I thought I would win sub$300.

You may be right, but I know as I've checked over the last year, I've seen a few CGC graded 9.6's, but I don't think I've seen any/many 9.8's listed. So if it's more common than believed, than most are being tucked away/hoarded still.

Just searching CGC census, it's clear a lot of copies of this book have not been sent in for grading. I see 66 total graded (between regular & painted cover), of which only 16 received a 9.8 (11 regular, 5 painted), so that's roughly 24%. That's better than Harbinger #1 and SMotA #10 in 9.8, but it's still fairly low....for now. I think we determined there are roughly 16K copies between the regular and Painted, so there's clearly a lot more copies out there that could be submitted for grading. Now the paper quality on this book was similar to the early VEI paper quality, so that makes 9.8 grading a bit tougher, and this is now a 30 year old book too (wow, can't believe it's been that long), so that could also make 9.8 copies a bit tougher. Still, to your point, there's a bunch more out there not yet graded, but for now, there's only 16 graded 9.8's for CGC (no idea for CBCS or PGX).

I'm sure news of the TBS show has helped increase that demand/cost for a 9.8 also since after what happened with The Walking Dead. Though that assumes that A) the Q&W show happens and B) it's an outstanding success.

As for the price, 9.6 CGC copies have been going around $170-$200ish for at least a year now, and if I add the number of 9.6's and 9.8's together, 65% of all graded copies are 9.6 or better (meaning around 40% of graded copies are a 9.6), then with the current number of copies graded, I'd say $1,000 for a Q&W #1 in 9.8 is probably about right. For me personally, it seems high solely because with 16K copies made and only 66 copies graded, that's way too few copies graded currently for me to be confident that the % of 9.8's of this book remains at 24% or lower. I'm actually surprised more copies haven't been submitted for grading due to the TV show talks.

I think it is fantastic that those of us on this site our so passionate about Valiant. I am just not sure the rest of the comic world at large is so I don’t know how much a TV show really moves the books. Witch blade was a far more popular book and I don’t think the TV show really moved the needle that much on her books. Even a show like Arrow or Flash I don’t think have made much of an impact on those characters books.

Walking Dead has been a bit like catching lightening in a bottle and it was already hugely popular when the TV show was announced.

I hear your point about 9.6s (both covers going for $170-200) but a painted 9.6 sold for around $36. I wouldn’t make the argument that has made a new market for 9.6s but rather someone got a phenomenal deal. I think over many auctions final results often follow a bellshape curve and there are always those random results that are a standard deviation or three away from the mean.

It will be interesting to see where this book sells for in the future. I am skeptical that it joins Solr 10, Harbinger 1 and A&A 0 (gold) as a $500-1,200 book.

Oh I totally agree with you...Either over $1,000 for Q&W #1 was high long term based on hopes for a TV show AND low number of copies graded so far, or it raises the question of are books like SMotA 10 and Harbinger 1 (and others) severely under priced long term. It's such a difficult question to answer because Q&W is so radically different from everything else Valiant. It's less of a super hero book and more of dramatic comedy with some action (and it actually would translate great to TV). So trying to compare it to others in Valiants library is hard to do since I think it would attract a completely different kind of buyer/fan/collector than the other Valiant fare.

Long term though if I had to bet which Valiant book had the most legs on it still, it would be Harbinger #1 in 9.8 with coupons intact. It still makes CBRs top 100 hot list (the only Valiant book that does). It's still really difficult to grade because of paper quality issues. It's a hard book to press because of spine issues. It had the most iconic cover of all Valiant books...If you read/collected in the 90's, it was hard not to know what the cover of Harby 1 looked like. I forget which publication (maybe Wizard) but it was voted I know a few years straight the most important book of the 90's (and I might be confused, but I thought in one of them they argued of the 20th century, which in retrospect is just arrogance considering all the Golden Age books and early silver age books). Anyways, I could go on , but point being is Harbinger 1 from VH1 is not unknown to non-Valiant fans, it's still a difficult grade even today, and the % of 9.8s really hasn't improved (unlike SMotA 10 which seems to be seeing more 9.8s graded lately), and the price has remained steady and upward (SMotA 10 again keeps fluctuating between $750-$1500). Plus with a rumored Harbinger movie and a rumored Faith movie, I just see this still as being THE book to own. May not be the rarest (ie Bloodshot 0 Platinum), but in terms of significance and continued growth in value, I feel comfortable saying it still remains the best Valiant book to invest in.

I think I got super lucky with the Painted Variant 9.6 for $36.00 because everyone was watching and bidding on the 9.8. I just swooped in and grabbed it on the cheap. :thumb:
