Dropoff in shared movie universe excitement
I say the backlash is coming. i say there is a huge dropoff between the excitement for it when V movies were announced and even now.

Look I know people are upset but wouldn't you like to see it right with out grammar or spelling mistakes. Maybe Eternal Warriors scars were on the wrong side. I'd rather they make us wait that have a stupid over looked mistake like that.
Be patient what's another few months we've only waited since the 90's

It was bound to happen. Especially when the D.C. Movies have been mostly terrible. Personally, I never thought there would be buzz over a VALIANT cinematic universe anyway. It's just not well known enough. The movies would really have to be hits in order to generate excitement over a crossover.

Re: Dropoff in shared movie universe excitement
I do think a backlash is possible and maybe inevitable, but I'm not sure we've reached that point yet. Spiderman Homecoming and Wonder Woman both did great business at the box office this year, and people seem excited for the upcoming MCU and DC movies. Beyond that the Marvel Netflix shows and the DC CW shows seem to be doing well. I agree that if DC continues to release bad films, that could make the hole genre less sustainable and hasten the backlash, but Wonder Woman helped greatly in that respect.
On top of that, there is a supply side consideration at work. Studios want franchises. They don't want to release single films any more. They want the possibility of a dozen films that they can release without needed to start from scratch to promote. As long as big studios want franchises, I think we'll continue to see shared cinematic universes built on comic characters. Sony and Paramount are both dying to get a franchise right now, and Valiant is probably pretty affordable relatively speaking.

Let me clarify that I don't believe superhero movies are going to see a downturn anytime soon. What I do agree with is less enthusiasm for the crossover aspect. TV, yes, as that has been fairly standard fare for decades. But the massive movie crossovers have to get better or people will just start to see them as money grabs. Avengers was great, but BvS was crap and Avengers 2 was meh. Honestly with all the characters involved, I'm not expecting much from Infinity War, and Justice League has been rewritten and reshot so much it will be lucky to receive a tag of "watchable".

I say shareholders probably want them more than studios at this point. V is not affordable, You got X O, Bshot etc, that's a ton of special effects that are needed. Sony and Paramount might end up dead for trying to start shared universes...Thegreatmagnet wrote: Studios want franchises. They don't want to release single films any more. I think the movie going public is getting tired of shared movie universes.
The Mummy bombed, it was supposed to start a movie universe.*
Also DC's rush to beat Marvel at the box office with there own movie universe started to make people sick of movie universes i think.
*it also didn't help that the movie sucked.

Re: Dropoff in shared movie universe excitement
I disagree. I think there's still plenty of excitement for good quality movies and Marvel has done an excellent job of delivering and creating an expectation that their movies will be good and DC has done the reverse until Wonder Woman. There were great parts to Suicide Squad and Man of Steel but the overall quality did not live up to Marvel. Nevertheless, people want to be entertained and I'll gladly pay for a movie ticket for something worth seeing on the big screen. IMO.

Excellent? They are good but hardly excellent. You make it sound like they are masterpieces that will be revisited 40 years from now.geocarr wrote:I disagree. I think the interest is there when they are well done and well thought out. Outside of saying that the Universal Monsters were the first true shared universe on film, which yes it was, there was literally no point to Dark Universe. And that movie sucked so much.Brother Darque wrote:I think the movie going public is getting tired of shared movie universes.
