I've been trying some new Image series lately. I really like Copperhead, but dropped Wayward and am on the fence about Goners. I will at least finish off the first arc.

Wayward looked really promising. I'm going to pick up a crap ton of digital books from Image with their Cyber Monday deal. I just got done reading the "All Out War" arc of TWD. Great story... and I am almost caught up with all the issues! I have the latest TPB to read now, and already can't wait for vol. 23.

The first issue got my attention, but the second and third issues just didn't intrigue me anymore. Also, some of the dialogue took me out of the story a bit.lorddunlow wrote:Wayward looked really promising. I'm going to pick up a crap ton of digital books from Image with their Cyber Monday deal. Re: What comics are you reading now?
Umbral is on my list to catch up on but that makes it sound even better. To the top it goes!lorddunlow wrote:nscc wrote:lorddunlow wrote:nscc, are you really wading Umbral?! I sure hope so, I have no one to talk to about it except the creators on Twitter (which is pretty awesome).
Also, when you mentioned Stardust, are you talking about the Neil Gaiman prose/art mixture from the late 90s? If so, that's one of my favorite books ever!
I have read Umbral issues 1-3 I think... I haven't read since earlier this year at least. They are on my list to jump back in from the beginning. What I remember from it, it was a great start, I just got distracted and kinda forgot about itNot much to converse about with ya since I don't remember any of the finer points of it, but I'll post in here when I get caught up so we can shoot the breeze.
![]()
As far as Stardust, YES, I am talking about the vertigo book! I loved the original 4 issue series, but I lost it over time to an ex. I bought the novel again on a trip and have read it at least 5x. That is rare for me, I find I can't read anything more than once unless it is a book of facts, a technical manual or a comic. For me, I do enjoy the process of reading, building the world in my head with the authors descriptions, and giving them their own voices, but once its finished I find I can't capture that magic again and I find most things fall flat on a re-read unless I adore the characters. With Stardust, the magic is always there.
I got my girlfriend to watch the movie with me and she is hooked too. While the movie is not perfect, it is damned good and we have watched it at least 3-4 times together. It's also one of her go to "background movies" while she is doing stuff around the house or sick (along with happy feet, tangled, etc). A few friends had never heard of it and really enjoyed watching with their kids too.
I keep meaning to pick up some other books by Neil Gaiman too. I've only read sandman and death comics and stardust. Every read any of this other prose you want to recommend?
As for Umbral, definitely get caught up. There were two HUGE reveals in #11 that came out last week, so avoid any news on it. It is such a fun Dark Fantasy with great characters.
As for Neil Gaiman, he is my favorite prose author. Neverwhere is my absolute favorite even though it is a novelization of his super low budget BBC TV miniseries of the same name - it is awesome in an old school Doctor Who kinda way. American Gods is awesome and has moved me emotionally more than any other fantasy book. Any of his short story collections are great even if the stories are hit and miss. The hits far outweigh the misses. He retells a fairy tale better than anyone else. I suggest checking out Snow, Glass, Apples as it is a retelling of Snow White with an awesome twist.
Anansi Boys is really good (but I haven't finished it since my son was born while I was reading it and I haven't finished a novel since then
If you like comedy, then you cannot miss Good Omens. It is cowritten by him and Terry Pratchett and is absolutely hilarious. Very similar to Douglas Adams books.
Thanks for the other Neil Gaiman recommendations. I will check them out. My girlfriend always likes to get me a few books so these got sent to her right away. Good omens sounds like exactly what I would love to read. Similar to douglas Adams? Yes!!

Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

Missed it in the thread here.
Basically a mix of hardcovers and trades borrowed from friends and library. Some digital files in the mix too.
I think LordDunlow said Marvel Unlimited had all the old stuff. Is that right Dunlow? I know you read every post.
Any idea if ASM, Avengers, FF, Iron Man, Journey into mystery and all the old classic titles from the get go are on there?

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Most, if not all, of those issues are available. I personally don't know of any ASM that isn't available. All of FF seems to be accounted for as well. Not sure about the others, but there are plenty of issues of Iron Man, Avengers, and Journey into Mystery. Some titles have big holes (like New Mutants which pretty much has nothing past #50 or so for some reason). But the classics at least seem to be accounted for. They add issues all the time (and unlike Netflix, nothing disappears randomly).nscc wrote:StarBrand wrote:Hey nscc, in what format are you reading the Marvel Silver Age stuff? Archives?

Just read the entire Stray Bulets: Über Alles tpb and was blown away. I will say this is the best comic I have ever read. I mean it. 6/5 if that is possible
Pull List: I only buy TPB's, HC's and Hellboy comics

Roachmill. The Blackthorne run. So glad I found them. I now have the Dark Horse run on the way. I have much respect for the work Rich Hedden did on this book.

Re-reading my fables trades again.
So good.
So good.
Re: What comics are you reading now?
Final got the final trades for the Stan Lee/Boom Studios Heroes. Traveler, Soldier Zero, and StarBorn.
I really enjoyed these titles at the time and enjoy them still. That said you can totally tell these books were cancelled and not a natural conclusion. The Traveler was decent as it had attempted to wrap the entire purpose of the character up. Solider Zero was probably strongest despite the fact there was literally no build up towards that end and felt like a story from a year down the line. Starborn was weakest by virtue of just having to wrap everything up and it just came across way to neatly.

Reading DC's first run of Checkmate from the late 80's, really engaging stuff. Never really found Suicide Squad all that interesting, but this side of Taskforce X I like

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Based on all the great recommendations from everyone in this thread, I bought the first "Bone" TPB for my daughter for Christmas. She thought it looked pretty cool and said she has heard about it in school, but has not had a chance to read it. To my surprise, her older brothers both said they loved reading that series in elementary school.SnotDrip wrote:Funny you should mention that as my kids sign Bone out regularly from their school library as well which I think is great as they read the trades as a way of learning to read English (and no Enguish is not their first language). My son was reading to me the other night (Bone - The Dragonslayer and Rock Jaw). I started getting my kids into comics a few years back and the stuff I bought them home (FCBD etc) wasn't interesting. Then my daughter gets hooked on Archies, Bone, Tintin and now my son. He just read this post over my shoulder and all he could say was that he is "cheapo" and doesn't want to buy them - they are free in the library.Brother J wrote:As a bus driver, I've seen kids get on the bus with copies of various Bone trade paperbacks they have borrowed from the school library, so it seems that quite a few kids are into it.
I find it interesting that the trades appeal more to my kids then to me, that they naturally have congregated to them and the schools appear to have picked up on this.

Re-read TWD HC 1-8 covering issues 1-96. I still haven't read much past 100 in singles. Lots of catching up to do. If only my stuff was organized....... Which is why HCs are my preferred method of reading.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
While in the hospital recovering from surgery on New Year's Eve, I got to read the following trades:
"Preacher" Volume 1
"Ex Machina" Volume 1
"WinterWorld" and "WinterSea" HC from IDW (1988)
I really enjoyed "Ex Machina" and look forward to reading the rest of the trades from the series. I have all the volumes except Volume 9. I could go either way with the "Preacher" series. I enjoyed the first volume, but I don't know if I can take 8 more volumes of shock value from Ennis. I have volumes 1, 2 and 8, so I don't know if I want to spend the cash to buy all the missing pieces of this story.
I absolutely loved "WinterWorld" and "WinterSea" from Chuck Dixon and I can't wait to read the new series from IDW. The first trade should arrive with my DCBS order this week. This series would make a great movie.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I just finished these two trades:
"Preacher" Volume 2
"Ex Machina" Volume 2
I am definitely sticking with the "Ex Machina" series, but I think I will stop at Volume 2 with "Preacher."
The new "WinterWorld" trade from IDW arrived today!

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Well, I hurt my back again on December 30th, been reading a lot since I have nothing much else to do. A read a few before the start of the new year, but this is what I have read since January 1st:
Batman 588-590
Batman: Gotham City Secret Files 1
Detective Comics 787, 871-881
Fables 94-113
Gotham Central 12-15, 19-25, 28-31, 33-40 (man, I wish they'd print all the issues in the trades & not skip around)
Savage Wolverine 12-17
Wolverine: Origins 28-30
Wonder Woman 160-161
X-Men Legacy 217-218
X-Men: Original Sin
73 issues this year already. I read mostly via TPBs, so if anyone is wondering why some issues get skipped (like Gotham Central) or I have some odd single issues (like that one 'Tec) it is because not all trades have consecutive runs of issues. The Batman stuff was half one run (Black Mirror trade) and then the rest, plus the WW, was a collection of early BKV-written DC stories. IDK what is up with GC...

You must have the old printings. The new printings are the whole series in 4 TPB's (1-40 with no gaps). They retail $20 each or $11.59 each on instock.slym2none wrote:Gotham Central 12-15, 19-25, 28-31, 33-40 (man, I wish they'd print all the issues in the trades & not skip around)

Read the following Lemire books:
Lost Dogs - 3/5. I enjoyed the art a lot.
Essex County - 4/5. I recommend this story. It was really well written and the individual stories all tied together nicely.

I seem to recall Elveen highly recommending "Planetary" so I picked up the first two TPB volumes tonight in a Buy 1 Get 1 Free Sale at my LCS. Once I finish "Ex Machina," I will try to pick up the other trades and read this series.
