Something to be a part of
Hey all!
I'm an 80's/90's kid and first and foremost I would consider myself a gamer as it pertains to artistic entertainment and story telling. "Retro gamer" is likely the most accurate description should I bucket myself. I grew up on Atari, Nintendo and arcades. Legit, smokey, cabinet filled, quarter sucking arcades. My media consumption has always been in the form of video games, TV and movies; very infrequently was it comics. However, on trips "up north" as we say here in lower Michigan, my mother would always stop at the market on the way out to help me put together my survival kit. Sure as hell didn't want to listen to oldies the whole way!
Survival kit:
Jolt or Surge
Twizzlers, Gummy Bears, Recee's
Gameboy
Walkman
MAD / Cracked
X-Men comics
This was the tradition for years. And all of those MAD/Cracked were piled up at my uncles cabin over the years and my cousins and I still read them to this day. My 90's X-Men comics all made it to moms basement and are still there to this day.
As others have mentioned I played a hell of a lot of Turok and interestingly played the Ironman XO game too not really knowing that either had anything to do with comics or Valiant!
That was pretty much the end of my comic story until recently.
As I am a new father, I find my gaming time well, essentially eliminated. So I have been hungry for some other creative media and I admitted to myself that I hate traditional books. But knowing that Walking Dead came from graphic novel/comic source material gave me the angle I needed. Took to Google to see what was out there. Not much struck a cord with me until I saw a cover for 4001AD as the main image for a blog post, and something grabbed me. I do fancy dystopian/cyberpunk/neo-japan type stuff as it ties back into my early anime days with titles like Ghost In The Shell, Fist of The North Star, Transformers, Bubblegum crisis, etc. Something about that cover was like READ ME...and that lead into the feverish internet search hole that taught me all about the Valiant universe, characters and backstory.
Oddly enough, that was all I needed to get hooked. Hell-I have spent far more time reading ABOUT Valiant than reading IT thus far! (that is about to end!) I have always been a contrarian, against the grain, own beat kind of dude and the Valiant story really struck that cord with me. I am all in. I want it all, even though my house and wallet and wife cant handle it all. I am getting caught up on trades, picked up some singles from the LCSs and trying to bolster my fledgling collection! There is something brewing with all of this. And I want to be a part of it. A Universe of this size getting a fantastic reboot is not something that happens often. I want in on the ground floor, and that opportunity just isnt there with Marvel/DC (although I will always have a soft spot for XMen). I cant help but believe in where this thing is headed, thanks to the leadership and thanks to the community!
At this time I find myself trying to two track reading and collecting. And I am very thankful for a few board members (Dr Noel, mkb28) who allowed me to pick up some great sets to get me started and I hope to meet some other great folks! Particularly anyone local to Metro Detroit area as I am totally not plugged in other than frequenting and subscribing at a couple local shops.
I now have a creative art that I can consume at my own pace, whether at home or on the road - and I can show my daughter that reading is fun and powerful and enjoyable and help her find her interests one day.
Thanks for having a listen and welcome to all those who's stories I read before posting and to any that post after me!

Some of us have read every Valiant comic and we've still spent far more time reading ABOUT Valiant than reading it.booie wrote:Hell-I have spent far more time reading ABOUT Valiant than reading IT thus far!

Nope. That would be halfway interesting. My dissertation doesn't make it halfway to interesting.Chiclo wrote:Is that from your dissertation?greg wrote:Some of us have read every Valiant comic and we've still spent far more time reading ABOUT Valiant than reading it.booie wrote:Hell-I have spent far more time reading ABOUT Valiant than reading IT thus far!
