Re: Unity and Original Unpublished X-O Manowar #1 art for sa
I have no hard feelings, and I get the motivation of both buyer and seller, but it seems clear to me that it wasn't a level playing field, and I'm pretty confident that the seller would have done much better letting it ride.
In any event,
. I look forward to seeing the art side by side, Greg!
I also bought and sold my first item on eBay in 1997 (right after graduation, if I recall), but I don't know the month as that account is now long gone:( I think my first sale was an Ernest Hemingway first edition, and it was without pictures then. Crazy to even contemplate buying or selling a collectible without pictures.

Yeah I mean there are 3 other bidders on this board alone, so you are probably right. Those are also the pitfalls for a seller who ends an auction early.nycjadie wrote:and I'm pretty confident that the seller would have done much better letting it ride.
All the BWS Unity art that has come up recently in auction has gone in the $1,500-$2000 range (minus fees) so I feel like I did just fine and I'm glad that someone on the board got it versus some random on EBAY. Also I made a good profit off both of these, so a few dollars either way wasn't going to kill me. For the record, both Ed and Greg tried to talk me down some but I wouldn't budge. I didn't HAVE to sell either of these. I kind of could use the money, but if neither sold that would have been fine too.
When Greg approached me, I actually told him that I was thinking about ending the auction and not selling it since I made that sale to Ed already. I honestly thought I would sell one, not both, and in my head I figured if one sold ahead of the other I would probably end the auction on the remaining. I have a The Crow page up that I ended after these 2 sales and it's going back in my collection. I have another The Crow page that am also considering ending because I don't really need to sell it at this point.
Again, I apologize.

Do you all remember sending in personal checks as the safe way to pay on ebay lol
I can't remember what year my brother had his account that I used when I was 17 and under if it wasn't 1997 it was 1998. I'll have to ask him if he remember the account cause I think it got hacked

So is the Unity 0 page. It's Unity and BWS art. Beautiful page. You never know how high it would have gone. $2K+ seems to be the average right now for an ordinary page. With a Unity provenance, I think it would have gone much higher.

True!
The X-O cover was listed for $1,999 on Ebay but you offered it here for $1,800 to save the Ebay fees and get the same result.
I was interested in the Unity page for the $1,500 starting price, and $1,500 on Ebay would have netted $1,350, so I figured I would ask if you would do the "save the fees" version.
You said nope, I said ok, $1,500 then...and the PayPal 3℅ added to it.

I told you to send it FRIENDS AND FAMILY ... you wouldn't have paid any fees! We aint family?greg wrote:...and the PayPal 3℅ added to it.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh credit card. Gotcha. Well it's free if you have money in your account or it's tied to a bank account
SonicDan
I actually have a recollection that way back when they effed up my account and I lost my original account or something. I was on before November 1997 but that's when they started tracking me officially again. I wish I could remember exactly when I joined. I do recall telling some of my co-workers about it back in the day and the response was "what the F is EBAY??" LOL !!!
My biggest claim to fame on EBAY though was selling TITANIC movie props BEFORE the movie ever came out. For some reason I knew it was going to be a blockbuster and the J. Pederman Clothing company had a deal with the movie company to sell props to recoup their insane over-budget. I bought about a half dozen things and put them up on EBAY and they sold like crazy when the movie hit! So I bought a bunch more stuff! More and more and more. I was the only one selling this stuff on EBAY and all I was doing was marking up what I was buying at retail from J. Pederman. So then I get a call from EBAY and they want to know if they can give my phone number to ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT because they want to interview me about all my Titanic props I'm selling!!! LOL!! They said "we wanna come down to your warehouse and check out all your Titanic props" LOLLLLLLLLLLl!!! I had to break it to them that I was selling these props out of my bedroom and I only had a dozen or so thing remaining and that I bought them from J. Pederman! ROFL!
The good old days of EBAY!!

I was definitely in for one of the pieces at a multiple of the listing price, and a bit higher on the other, depending on how they both went down. I won't say how much publicly, but as I said, I'm pretty certain you would have done better, even if with only one other bidder. It only takes two bidders.Crow331 wrote:We could debate this until the cows come home and right now it feels like itnycjadie wrote:So is the Unity 0 page. It's Unity and BWS art. Beautiful page. Were you going to pay over $2K ? No. Was Greg going to pay over $2k? No. Was 777Peralta going to pay over $2K? No. It takes 2 bidders to get a war going. I'm sorry we didn't get to see this all play out in auction and I probably should have tried, but I'm happy with what I got and happy for the 2 parties I sold these to.

Great story about the props. I sold rare books early on eBay. I bought them at library sales and at The Strand in NYC, then I flipped them. Made a few hundred a week in my salad days. Of course, you can't do that now.
I also bought modern furniture for awhile. My best piece was a rare 50s cabinet I bought for $300 delivered on eBay. I had them deliver it to my storage space. They left it wrapped in blankets. I used the same picture, posted it for $4K,and it sold in a week. I never even unwrapped it. Had a few crazy ones like that. Helped me get through law school. Those things are very rare for me these days. Everyone is a dealer now with an informed knowledge and readily available alternatives a click away.

Anyone remember Amazon Z Shops? I tried that out as well. Their auctions never really took off. I've been an Amazon customer since 1996. Pretty soon, I'll be hiring people who were born after that date.
