New (Old) CGC Holder Warning

Post by Intrepidxc »

Hi all,

I went through all my slabs that were done in the new CGC holder prior to the change to the current updated holder. All 11 slabs now show waviness in the books and are going back to CGC. None of them had waviness when I received them.

It may be worth checking all your new (old) CGC slabs even if they looked good when you received them. Luckily 9 of the 11 are books that don't have any real value outside of the sentimental value to me. Unfortunately two of them are VEI gold books in 9.8. We'll see what happens.

:hope:

Yup mine will arrive there by the end of the week. It's a very disappointing situation but it is what it is. Speaking of golds I just found a gold xo #0 for a whopping 17.50 it was in a shop for 35 bit they put it in the half price bin.
I Miss the good old days.

Looks like I'll wait before sending any books to CGC then. I don't want my first experience stabbing books to be one I'll regret.

I think you are okay now. I'm about to send a batch myself. Now, if you buy any CGC books that were graded from March to June of 2016, I would be cautious. Ask if the book has been reholdered or if you can see better pics to check for waviness.

Why are you stabbing your books? You really should consider slabbing your books so you can't stab them.

I don't love the new holders, personally. I just sent in 200 to CGC to reholder. They pushed back quite a bit, but I got them to do it. The shipping alone to them was nearly $350, which they are paying.

WOW, you must hold some weight with CGC. Are you a dealer? It's like pulling teeth dealing with them as a collector. :!:

I'm not a dealer, but I submit a boatload of books. I also sell the ones I don't want or duplicates, which means the value of the new reholders are important to me.

I submitted the last 8 books in the New (old) holder to CGC this morning. This is the last batch of New (old) holders. The New (new) holders are much better. I'm praying that the grades on my Wrath of the Eternal Warrior 1 Gold and Faith 1 Gold stay 9.8s.

I have no reason to suspect they won't, but you never know.

Half my books have been processed, and so far no grade changes.

I will say, my most recent invoice of new books was only 19/30 in 9.8. I haven't had that low of a success rate in a really long time. Maybe I got a tough pre-screener.

Seriously. 19/30 is not bad, but I've been batting 26-28/60 lately!

Yes, that's solid. On another note, since reading the story of the missing Action page at UPS, do you insure your comics with another third-party provider?

I wouldn't ship UPS or FEDEX anyway. You cannot get enough insurance on your packages as they are limited to $100. Always ship USPS. I know people have complaints about getting USPS to pay up, but it's possible and you can fully ensure your books.

Then again, I've never shipped something worth more than a TWD #1. If I was shipping AF 15, etc I'd probably have separate collectibles insurance.

Okay thanks. I will look into closer to when I plan on subbing, I remember shipping back to Canada was atrocious! Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I subbed more books....

Hmmm....just received my SMotA #10 (1st) - 9.6 and Visitor vs. Valiant Universe #1 ($2.50 variant) - 9.4.

...and now I have to look for waves in the books.....darn......the #10 looks clean.....but what should I look for with the VvsVU?

Are the "waves" noticeable? The slabs look good.

Sidenote: I have a couple of other books that were graded about a year or two ago, and they look to be the same holder, but different labeling.

Hmmm.....

Sweet books! The waves are very noticeable. If they have the liner in them, then they should be fine.

The good news is CGC will replace them all if they show waviness.

I only had 11 books graded by CGC before they switched to the new(new) case. CGC replaced all of them for free (including return shipping) and credited my account for the cost of shipping the books to CGC.
