I felt the crux of the story was how the couple dealt with Hwen being a phantom. How to eat? How to tell mom? How to do the whoopie? Once they got over that hump the 'tension' was gone. Thats just me though.ManofTheAtom wrote:How come?
I liked every issue till the end (just another series that had a direction but was canceled mid stream...)

Seriously though, I never could get into Dr. Mirage; Secret Weapons seemed forced; and, at that time, Valiant could have done either limited series for books like HardCorps and Armorines, or had some sort of "Valiant Comics Presents" series to include these groups and other characters.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

I was never a big fan of Dr. Mirage either, I think in retrospect you're right, a limited series would have probably sufficed for DM, HC, SW & Armorines.slym2none wrote:Seriously though, I never could get into Dr. Mirage; Secret Weapons seemed forced; and, at that time, Valiant could have done either limited series for books like HardCorps and Armorines, or had some sort of "Valiant Comics Presents" series to include these groups and other characters.

In a way it did but never to the same degree. The stakes were not as high. Mirage's ability to go solid once a day meant life was much easier for him and Carmen. The focus had to shift away from them (my favourite part of the book) and to the paranormal. That's fine but the writing also started to suck big time.ManofTheAtom wrote:You gotta consider that post Chaos the tension returned. His having gone... um... "solid" as it were was a plot device so Carmen would get pregnant for later stories.
I remember in the Walt Willey issue Mirage and Carmen are researching the origins of Walt's tattoo. They say the culture its from didnt get records. How it will be super hard to find anything. They stay up all night looking and then all of a sudden Carmen finds it. A little out of the blue but okay.
THEN, next panel "A few mintues later"
Carmen says (approx) "after looking at the information I've decided its bad"! Thats it, no explanition as to what the tattoo means, what the information she found was, where she found it. They go on to explain why its bad and who the bad guys are but nothing more than the bare minimum

The issue before was just as bad (#12 and #13 I think). The series seemed to get back on track after that (too bad it ended so soon after) but I still think the fact that Hwen could go solid once a day made things far too easy for them.ManofTheAtom wrote:That is crappy writing, but I liked the idea of a human/necromantic creature hybrid and think it could have been done reallygood.
I agree, the idea was a very good one. Mirage had a large role to play in the Valiant universe. He was the real protagonist to Darques' antagonist. Sandria kept saying he was the one and that he was supposed to be the next Master of necromantic energy. I think his child would have been just as important. Sadly, Chaos pushed the series too fast into becoming what it was slowly leading too and by the time it figured itself out again they pulled the plug

The artwork was like Bruce Timm's designs for the Batman and Superman animated series, Hwen looked like an amalgam of Dr Strange and Dr Mirage, and Carmen was an amalgam of Carmen and Tomb Raider.
The only highpoints was that Aram was back to being the Aram we know from VH 1, and Master Darque was Pinky again instead of a Rod Stwart/Constantine wanna be.

Did they ever release that book?ManofTheAtom wrote:The artwork was like Bruce Timm's designs for the Batman and Superman animated series, Hwen looked like an amalgam of Dr Strange and Dr Mirage, and Carmen was an amalgam of Carmen and Tomb Raider.

Nope, thankfully.
Anthony (poster known as Blood of Heroes) posted some character designs from it in the VALIANT mailing list (which doesn't exist anymore).
Maybe you can email him so he can show them to you.
