4001 AD: War Mother Discussion
Whelp... Cool sci-fi story, great art. All in all a good comic.
Mind-blowing introduction to a major new character? Ehhhhh.
Suitable tie-in with 4001 AD? Sure, I suppose.
Looking forward to see what Valiant has in store for Ana.
My ranking of the one shot tie-ins for 4001:
1) Bloodshot
2) X-O
3) War Mother
4) Shadowman

Re: 4001 AD: War Mother Discussion
I thought it was a solid beginning with intriguing characters and good art. It wasn't as good as Bloodshot 4001 AD but I thought it offered much more than X-O and Shadowman 4001 AD. There's at least a story that can follow from this with really good potential.

I agree with JCP, but would add this one simple quote "I look forward to ruling you"....JCP wrote:I thought it was a solid beginning with intriguing characters and good art. Why spend so much time showcasing genetic manipulation regarding children? I know this is going to be far fetched, but could this child character be some form of a manifestation of Father?
Hear me out first. The kid is what we all would call a spoiled brat, throwing a temper tantrum after being rescued... He must have been raised with the notion that he would become greatness and is destined to lead... Why? Could Father have perfected AI? It seemed like Father was kind of easy to kill one on one with Rai. Could he be playing the long game, knowing he was going to die and that New Japan was lost? Father's sense of ego was computerized, everything for the betterment of New Japan. Place this same type of ego in a human, could it not become megalomania?
I know this is quite drawn out, but there has to be something behind the showing of the child-berthing area, this kid, and his "destined to lead" mentality.
I enjoyed this book, it entertained me. That's not saying much, a spoon and fork can entertain me for hours...

Re: 4001 AD: War Mother Discussion
I look forward to reading this book tonight after I pick it up on my way home from work. Someone on Reddit said something about them expecting this character to be a 'fill-in' for Magnus like Divinity was for Solar, and how Savage might be for Turok. Are there any similarities that might point in this direction from those that have read it? I didn't remember hearing anything about it that led me to that conclusion, so I wanted to ask the question of others who have read it.

Re: 4001 AD: War Mother Discussion
Ok here's my bit.
First off great read I really enjoyed the gun and multi hit combo it can do. I enjoyed the whole pkg art story new charaters.
Nit picks.
What the hell was with the blue creachers and is it wearing a space suit? Looks like a glass helmet on it in the panel before its head exploded.
The war mother still looks like trekker from dark horse. How can she be called a mother if she can't have kids??
One big thing I don't understand.
In survival indoor plumbing is not as important as other things. So your telling me one female runs off by her self. Kills a bunch of people for maybe 12' of looks like half inch copper wire risks her life for it all in the name of indoor plumbing
A space ship or pod, hight technology falls to earth after 2000 years and all shes interested in is a few feet of copper piping. That being said where are the rest of the people that space pod looked the size of a foot ball field and there's one person on it. Either that's fishy or father isn't utilising space very well for his inhabitants
I'm glad it was my first birthday book but her actions are not logical.
If I was survival man which I am you can easily make plumbing out of clay or bamboo if they grow everything isn't there a plant like bamboo if it can make a gun couldn't it make a hollow vine. Why not train the vines to get water from the earth and bring it right to your sink. She wasent looking for big plumbing like 4" so it's not plumbing for a toilet. Maybe it's to make a stil. Anyway being maintenance for a government building doesn't help my imagination.

Re: 4001 AD: War Mother Discussion
I loved this issue - the art & sci-fi story felt & read like something published in a heavy metal mag.
Very curious to learn more about this strange tribe of human & human/plant hybrid humanoids... they all seem very concerned about any wildlife getting into their enclave & spreading an infection. Like everything living outside of their Grove is a viral threat capable of disrupting what they have.
Also wondering about Ana as well. Is she genetically engineered? She has the ability to not only resist any infection from life outside of the grove, but also she can kill/wither with a touch.
Loved the sentient gun Flaco - the idea has a similar vibe to Rogue Trooper, which is cool!
Wondering about the dynamic of how these people all co-exist & what their hierarchy is, it seems like the plantlike people may be lording it over the normal looking people somewhat - and I was very surprised at the end when Flaco killed Sylvan & no one reacted to that... I got the impression that Sylvan was a leader figure for the community. Everyone just cheered Ana when she came back in after killing him.

Felt like something from the old Epic Illustrated magazine. I'm excited to see more of this. Of all the 4001 tie-ins, I see the most possibility in this book.grendeljd wrote:I loved this issue - the art & sci-fi story felt & read like something published in a heavy metal mag.

Agreed - it was my favourite of the 4 one-shots, by far [although I did really like the set-up from the Bloodshot book as well].jmatt wrote:Felt like something from the old Epic Illustrated magazine. Was there an explanation in the issue why was everyone so cool with the death of the blue leader guy?

No, I don't think there was an explanation, but then again, it ended before an explanation could be given. Seemed like a cliff hanger to me, like it was trying to leave you wanting an explanation. It went against their rules, and I don't know if the rest of the humanoid plant blue thingys even realized that their leader (or what I would assume was their leader) was killed.Lady Oiorpata wrote:Was there an explanation in the issue why was everyone so cool with the death of the blue leader guy?

Furiosa along with a Johnny Five-like sentient gun? I'm in favor of this continuing. Wait until she has to teach the gun about puberty...

I haven't been on the boards much, but I picked this up because I'll likely try most of the original stuff they put out after reading Divinity. I liked the Ana character, but I'm more intrigued by the kid. Is this a one-shot? Any announced plans for anything else?

Besides a few teasers on Twitter by Dinesh, I'm pretty sure this is/was a one-shot. Not saying it won't start up sometime next year, but there is no mention of it being an ongoing series anywhere I have looked400yrs wrote:I haven't been on the boards much, but I picked this up because I'll likely try most of the original stuff they put out after reading Divinity. The best thing about this one-shot is the concept. The story itself wasn't very deep. It didn't feel like a meaty read. Not bad, but not the greatest one-shot though.
I hope this book is a tease into what may be an ongoing one day (just hope we don't have a Gen Zero-like waiting period before a series/mini is announced - if they do it at all).

I really liked the issue. Maybe my favorite of the 4001 tie-ins.
I hope to see War Mother again.
I'm hoping that they expand the 4001 ongoing beyond just Rai.

They're comin' outta the woodwork! Sometimes comics are nearly as good as pulp SF, at least in terms of the concepts presented. Trooper and Dredd were in that class of books. At least in the original iteration, social (or socio-technological) criticism ghosted Trooper's adventure plots, as I recall.QUARTZ wrote:Same here. I'm genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I'm totally digging War Mother as a character, and would love to see her get more involved with Rai and whatever he's got going now.
If I had to rank the tie-ins, it'd be the following:
Bloodshot
War Mother
X-O Manowar
Shadowman
