SDCC 2005 Sketches

Wow, nice stuff. I think the Tom Yeates Turok and the Sergio Carliello Solar pieces are my favorite.

Great stuff... I wish I had the chance to attend a big convention... I'd sure go crazy for sketches!!

I really like his use of light on Turok. I watched him draw and ink it. All with a brush.

I think I liked the Solar sketch best, but what a rack on Flamingo!

It was great to meet and talk to Sergio Carliello at the SDCC. I think I talked to him for about an hour while he worked. He is from Brazil and a very religious man. He started in the comic business because his brother needed help on book many years ago. In the 10 plus years he has been working he never had to search for work. Each time he found himself without a job, like what happened at Crossgen, work came looking for him. He really loves what he does and expressed great thanks for all of his blessings.

He started out as a letterer and almost every page I have bought of his has some of his lettering flair on the title line and issue information.

I talked with Tom Yeates for about an hour also. You might know his work from the Tarzan books. That is why I thought he would be a great choice to Turok. He told me that when he read Turok (Gold Key) as a kid it inspired him to want to be an artist. He said he would have loved to have done Turok while it was being published. Another interesting thing is that his daughter (I think he said she was 5 or 6) loves Turok as well. He said when he reads her bed time stories he gives her a few choices and she always picks Turok.

awesome sketches, and yeah the Yeates is the best. He is a natural choice for Turok, as is Mark Schultz or Al Williamson.

It all looks good, although calling some of those "sketches" is almost a dis-service!

Just curious, was there any charge for getting a sketch from these artists?

The prices ranged from $30.00 to $100.00
The Jeff Smith one was for a 15.00 donation to the CBLDF.

sweet. i love the both turoks, and the shadowman best. just my luck. when i checked out the flamingo, my mom walked behind me. heh, might be another 6 months till i see you guys.

I had Sergio draw one of my characters from my website. its a WW2 British commonwealth soldier: The Mystic Ghurka. Sergio is a real nice guy, I gave him a text idea and this is what he gave me back...
