The LOTG ubervariant seems to've been either the straw that broke the camel's back or the seed that sowed discontent for a fair number of VEI enthusiasts. This thread has echoed some of last year's Geomancer discussions.ShadowTuga wrote:I own EVERY SINGLE ISSUE that VEI has put out, including LOTG, which I got thanks to Hawkeyeps (read: had to went out of my way to READ THIS STORY!)- I've been a VEIhead since Harbinger #1 was the next book to be published.

I don't REALLY want to be the guy that thinks of VEI Pre-BoD as the best times we had, but things have been not as good since then, save Imperium and Ninjak (and now Analog Man), imo.Tony_H wrote:The LOTG ubervariant seems to've been either the straw that broke the camel's back or the seed that sowed discontent for a fair number of VEI enthusiasts. The LotG move was a shot in the face of devoted fans and collectors alike, I literally had a LOL moment with the guys at my LCS when they realized what they had to in order to get me the books (I live outside the Diamond territories). Hope they really learned their lesson, but it is a shame that so many people were deprived of that story, which was good, btw.

I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that VEI's best days are behind them.
Everyone needs to relax and let them do what they do. Will everything be good? Hell no! Has any company put out 100% kick *SQUEE* stuff? Hell no!
We are all acting like Millennials. (We want the best NOW and ALWAYS... Oh... And FASTER). We just can't have masterpiece after masterpiece. I know you guys are going to say that we don't expect that... But ya.. You kinda do.
I trust that Dino will put out stories that rock and in ways I won't see coming. I am glad they started VEI and HAVE given many many great stories, a few duds, a few ok, and a few masterpieces. So going in to year 4 in this competitive market for fewer comic readers... I will take it. All day long folks... All day long.

Re: I might be out on Valiant
I get where some of the board members are coming from. I would love to see Gen Zero, The Renegades etc. back in the monthlies (in the case of Gen Zero, a new monthly) but Valiant ARE putting out some decent books.
- Divinity II is just around the corner and looks great
- Faith gets an ongoing - I jumped on the mini in part because of this news
- Bloodshot Reborn, while not as good as Bloodshot is a decent title (still not sure the Annual worked for me though).
- Wrath of the Eternal Warrior looks like its heading in the right direction. Some really solid art and character driven storytelling
- Adventures of Archer and Armstrong, while just the 1 issue in looks to be a fun read. I was pleasantly surprised by this.
- Ninjak - my favorite book at the moment. Has been strong and consistent from #1
- Rai & 4001 - first 12 issues of Rai provided more questions than answers, I hope the plot holes get filled during or shortly after the 4001 event. As for 4001 itself, I'm very excited by it. Bloodshoot, Shadowman and XO one-shots all look very good. Plus there's that 'classified' book...
So much to look forward to. Sure there have been some not so good titles (Unity was an opportunity lost for a solid team book - had great foundations but was mishandled thereafter) but the positives outweigh the negatives for me.

Re: I might be out on Valiant
It's all subjective.
Some people might think that one comic is amazing, someone else might hate it: look at people's opinions on Imperium for example. In a way, I don't think that discussion on whether VEI are generally putting out good comics at the moment is really worthwhile because everyone interprets the company's output differently.
Whether or not VEI is already past it's 'Golden Age' is a fairly pointless discussion because everyone should be focussed on what VEI are producing next - that's what keeps the company afloat or sinks it.
If you enjoy a particular comic then buy it; if you don't, then don't. I guess one will be 'out on VEI' when they're not buying *any* Valiant comics. That seems to be the only sensible definition for the phrase to me.

I might be out on Valiant
I know everyone was wondering: "what's possumgrease's take on all of this?"
Well I'll tell you and thanks for asking.
I had quit VEI after the first 15 or so issues of each title. Reading a decompressed story on a monthly basis really didn't cut it for me. I sat on the sidelines, and eventually picked up a few deluxe editions of issues I thought I'd already read. These stories present so much better as a 12 issue arch. So I got back in.
The collector in me wants the individual issues and dcbs at 50% of cover was happy to oblige. Now I'm paying the same or less than back in the day.
I then pick up the deluxe versions to judge the stories themselves. Granted, they're a year behind, but I think everything holds up well.
Book of death, main series, was a bit of a disappointment as has been the shadowman universe outside of 0 and 10. (Robes and incest people. It's not that hard.)
Overall, I'm not expecting to find Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns, but it's still pretty good.
The two best talents that VEI has is FVL and Dysart. Those guys need more work.
The other wish list item that I have for X-O is (using my Bernie voice), "Enough with the damn vine." Go explore the galaxy some.

Yes to all this. I would also add "fix" EW and his continuity, pretty please.possumgrease wrote: Book of death, main series, was a bit of a disappointment as has been the shadowman universe outside of 0 and 10. (Robes and incest people. It's not that hard.)

I LOVED the solo issues of BoD and LotG was good stuff. My off-putting moment came with issue #4 and the reveal that WotEW would be (at least the first arc) about the Eternal Warrior coming back. Predictable as the Big 2 can be. Sorry.
Shadowman, after reading Ninjak #13 has just become much more interesting. I'm wating for a great run in the near future.
And, of course, I can't wait for what Dysart is cooking next. Everything he did for this company is gold.
And yeah, the Vine are getting boring as enemies in X-O, imho (although the Vine Imperative over at Imperium was nothing short of amazing). There's a freaking galaxy out there to explore. More Torment, for an example.

Hey ShadowTuga--
Look man, dont worry about lashing out at people who intentionally attack you..
Its lame when people choose to troll..
I am a part of another forum, the philzone.org, a grateful dead related forum (probably the biggest one) that had to go private because of all the trolls...I mean it was REALLY bad over there..
Now, new people cant even register..because so many trolls were using socks..its a bummer..
The thing is we all have differing opinions.. I might be one of like five people on this board that shares the opinion on VEI that I have..
I share it, but I wont insult anyone..
I think its good to have perspective..lets all throw our thoughts in good and bad, but keep the actual insults and attacks away..
No need to apologize for putting negative peeps in their place..
and about your EW comment...I knew when Vendetti got a job at DC, it was going to be a bad scene for the quality..As a writer especially for one of those companies, youre going to those writers meetings/seminars, and they are programming these guys how to write for DC comics.. I knew XO was going to become worse not long after that and well..He became a modern DC writer, and brought that DC mindset to VEI..which honestly I cant even look at a DC comic without vomiting..so things becoming boring and DC formulaic was inevitable..

I just regret that after almost 20 years of forums, I never lost my head with someone- mainly, because I carefully choose where to register, post and try to be a part of the community. Never had this coming, for sure. We all remember charty and some other dudes who were just trying to be trolls, but this was a personal attack imo. And I'm latin European- hot blood and all that *SQUEE*.

His tirade was completely uncalled for, but I'm trying to be the better man and apologize for my reaction to his trolling.
Either way, ignore button- Greg, I love your site.

Re: I might be out on Valiant
I've been wondering that for days. Thanks for clearing it up.possumgrease wrote:I know everyone was wondering: "what's possumgrease's take on all of this?"

And I agree. Valiant needs more robes and incest.

+1 Look it there, and here I was thinking I was the only one, over the Vine already.possumgrease wrote:I know everyone was wondering: "what's possumgrease's take on all of this?"
