Canvascutie on Ebay... what's the story?

Post by greg »

I believe I have seen at least five, if not ten, copies of X-O Manowar #1/2 Gold
sold in the past two or three months by canvascutie on Ebay.

Surely one or more of you guys have been involved in a purchase...
does anyone know the story? How did he/she get so many?
How many more are there?

There are LOTS of Wizard-related books in her Ebay auctions...
I guess some direct connection between the boyfriend and Wizard
wouldn't be out of the question?

I figure she has a box of 40 and just laughing to herself as she ranks in the money for this cash cow.

it seems like the price would start dropping if she had that many. I mean there cant be that many people in the market for one..if she really does have 40 of them I would imagaine that it would affect the price a lot if she continues selling them like this...just like that box of Magnus 0's that was just sold...I think that many books could affect the price a little bit. I mean there are just not that many people who are in need of these books. It is like that question "What would you do if you found a box of HG Action #1's...Well if you tried to sell them all at once the value would drop dramatically. You would have to let them go one by one..and you would probably have to damage the first few so that the truly hg ones would maintain their record prices...I think that 40-50 of any of the key valiants could affect the price of that book significantly if they hit the market in the same period of time. of course just my .02

But just think if you had 40 Magnus #0 with card intact and they were all graded 9.8 or higher. I personal think the box of 40 virgin comics could pull more seperated, graded and sold, hell maybe even the first 5 could pay for the price of the box that Bob sold it for.

First off let me say that all parties invlioved got a great deal. Bob got some room back, and someone saved 40 Magnus 0's for less than $20 each. Not bad.

I think that we will find out soon enough about the number of high grade books from that box...well maybe not soon enough, but I would bet that nearly everyone of those Bob books gets sent straight to cgc...they will probably end up on comiclink or ebay. I would think comiclink since the last batch of valiants did so well on that board...I dont know...just figure that if the box was keep in a good environment and did/does not get damaged in shipping from printer to bob to winner to cgc...then you could expect about 6 9.8 books(they appear at about 15 per 100,of course this includes all of the modern books that go through prescreening)...anything higher would really be like hitting the lottery....10.0s are 1 per 1000 and 9.9s are 5 per 1000...I would imagaint that if you dropped 6. 9.8 Magnus 0's on ebay right now that they would not go for anywhere near what the last round of 9.8 valiants went for.

I just think that there is a very limited market for these books. I would think that there are probably less than 100 people looking for a magnus 0 w/ card right now(@ FMV). I could be wrong, but I dont think so. Of course I also believe that this board makes up a large portion of the active valiant community.

I would agree that a significant find of books like the X-O 1/2 Gold
SHOULD go a long way to satisfy the demand on the market,
and you would expect the market average prices to fall eventually...

In fact, one of the past auctions of X-O 1/2 Gold by Canvascutie
ended without a bid... so the demand is not what it once was...

But there's actually a scenario where the market price doesn't fall...

It's up to canvascutie. If she decides that she will not take less
than the current market average, then there will not be any sales
at a lower number. She will keep the market average high, but she
will also keep the leftover books.

On the other hand, if she needs money for the books,
and the market has stopped paying the high price...
she will be forced to sell them cheaper and the market
average will drop.

So far, she hasn't decided to let any of them go publicly for under $169.95...
So it doesn't look like this book will be significantly cheaper without
a drastic discount over current sales.

I think that getting 40 HG Mag #0's CGC'd will put a serious crimp on the price of this issue until they can all be proper absorbed into serious collections. Not that it's a bad idea. It just has long range implications directly regarding this issue. They would mean more as a collectible to me as a signed & numbered edition, offered to everyone on these boards at COST, & still maintain a fairly high grade. Spread the wealth, so to speak. Wouldn't you like to have one? I would. JMO---Steve G

I would have loved to have gotten one or all of them. I even put in a bid, but it was no where near the final price. I need one for my complete set, so I might as well get one from this set. I mean if Bob had any other books that he was getting rid of we might be able to make a case for a pedigree or at least some sort of file copy notation from cgc...I think that would be kinda cool..Greg is right though. If the person with all of the xo.5 golds does not want to sell them then the price will remain high. I think that both of these cases might be evidence of large numbers of valiant books still waiting to see the light of day. I know that some on here has expressed opinions on both there being larger number of key books out there and there not being any remainder copies out there...I think that these 2 might be evidence that there are large numbers out there...of course we have no real idea about how many xo.5 golds the ebayer has...she could maybe only have 2 more...of course she could have 30 more....and the magnus books could be explained as the exception that proves the rule since this was someone "slightly" connected to valiant comics  either way we are in a very interested time for valiant comics

As mentioned above, she's already gone through at least 5. I've noticed numerous times when they don't sale and she relist them. She likes to keep them at a constant $170 regardless. She has just sold one and already has another up for sale. You tell me!

I'm waiting for the price to drop to $100 and then I'll think about it. Considering VVSS with 800 or less sell for cheaper I'm willing to bet that the comic just can't substain that price for much longer. To many no sales already. But that's just my .02 ;)

Anybody know what the final price on the Magnus #0 case is?
My last bid was for $560 and I was outbid.
Who was the buyer?

Wthout knowing the exact price, I think the case went for more along the lines of $750-800. We all 'know' the buyer through these boards. Just be patient, I'm sure he'll make a post soon enough.---Steve G

ps---the X-O statue should be in my hands by the end of this week, with plenty of pics to follow.:)

Unless, of course, there comes another source. We all know and agree that by the time X-O #1/2 was made, Valiant was sinking fast, with no help on the way....so, it's VERY likely that people got stuck (as has happened with numerous other 'fads' in this industry) with lots and lots of copies concentrated into few hands. There wasn't any demand for them when they were made, they weren't distributed through normal channels, so it's VERY possible a few folks are sitting on them....and don't even know it.

Me...? I'll keep my case (that's one hunnerd fitty) of Darker Image #1 gold....;) Bought straight from the defunct publisher of PC Comics, Steve Schanes himself! (where I also bought a CEOG for 30 cents...his basement is a warehouse. ;) )

I have one (unpainted), Greg has one, and now Steve - that is 3. Don't know if there are anymore out there.
