Really the only problem I had about the difference of directions is whenever obstacles/threats came up in this five issues, Shan was really clueless and had to look for others (oftentimes Hwen) for solutions/help. A great quality for real life like characters, not so much for a superheroine, especially after her tough act in Shadowman.

That never happened. Hwen wasn't there until she had already saved him, he just helped her in the final conflict. Except for the parts where they were both learning about the supernatural for the first time in the flashbacks. She wasn't "clueless"; she was in a completely alien environment. And she worked the rulesof it out very quickly anyway.

If anything he can only be said to have been of help in the last issue. Not to mention a core theme of the story is that TOGETHER they are Doctor Mirage.
