With how great this mini has been (I'd even go so far as to claim that it's even better than The Valiant), it deserves it

While it has its faults, I think it's better than the Valiant, even with one issue, still left to go.omega_override wrote:With how great this mini has been (I'd even go so far as to claim that it's even better than The Valiant), it deserves it

It certainly has held my attention better than any other mini series from Valiant so far. I am getting raised hopes for issue 4!agent_graves wrote:While it has its faults, I think it's better than the Valiant, even with one issue, still left to go.omega_override wrote:With how great this mini has been (I'd even go so far as to claim that it's even better than The Valiant), it deserves it

I think it'll close out well, leading directly into Wrath. It would be great if they snuck in a little easter egg for Operation Deadside.Ramses818 wrote:It certainly has held my attention better than any other mini series from Valiant so far. This is great news indeed. I am super happy about it.
Is it just me or is the first sentence in that article not a complete sentence? I may be losing my mind but that's really bugging me.

Get ready for more of those Legends of the Geomancer type exclusive books. This clearly was a win for that type of promo.

I'd have to agree. And without dredging up all of the rancor from previous threads, look at it this way: The price I paid to get the LotG books financed the purchase of most of my LCS' shelf copies for the BoD. I think I will wind up paying like $48 for all four issues. So, like $12 a book to get premium content? That beats the hell out of paying $20 for a variant cover. And tons more copies on the shelf, which is great for Valiant.depluto wrote:Get ready for more of those Legends of the Geomancer type exclusive books. This clearly was a win for that type of promo.
And yes, yes. I understand why that upsets some fans.

+2 I've paid about $20 for all three books thus far. It'll be a little less than $24 for all four issue's, when all is said and done.jmatt wrote:I'd have to agree. *SQUEE* stupid promotion IMHO.
Yes, it fills me with ire, and if VEI do it again, as seems likely, then I may drop the line, because I have felt disenfranchised as a consumer by this crass strategy. They do it again, I vote with my wallet, much as I love some of their books.

Like that time Honda released a car I couldn't afford. There wasn't even a cheaper base model. Never buying Honda again.
I know it's not exactly the same, but that's what I keep hearing with these complaints.

Not to rehash this debate, but just for the record my complaint was always that I as a digital reader was locked out from reading this story.jeremycoe wrote:Like that time Honda released a car I couldn't afford. There wasn't even a cheaper base model. Never buying Honda again.

That may be what you hear, but my issue is not in being able to afford, but in regards to 'availability'.jeremycoe wrote:Like that time Honda released a car I couldn't afford. There wasn't even a cheaper base model. Never buying Honda again.

EDIT: essentially if VEI further want to make it difficult for me to purchase story content (my LCS in the UK was only ordering enough BoD to qualify for 1 LotG #1), then I see no point in trying to do so - as I want to collect the whole story, then I see a future iteration of this sales gimmick as a jumping off point. VEI made it hard with Plus editions (a scarcity problem for UK for Rai Plus #1), and it has happened with BoD, so I won't be supporting them to do it again if they go that route and replicate the BoD/LotG sale model again).
Losing the sales of the the 7 to 9 books plus the odd variant I buy each month won't hurt their bottom line, but I cannot support them as a publisher with something I think is such a crass decision if they do go down that route once more.

Re: Valiants Book of Death Tops 200,000 in Sales

Well, LOTG or not- it worked for VEI.
I am LOVING this event, even without reading LOTG (I'll get it later thanks to hawkeyeps, once again). Now, the quality should be the reason behind these sales not gimmicks, imho. But in the end of the day, it doesn't matter. They made their pay.
I managed to get LOTG because of these boards and my friendship with a person who lives near America (the Diamond territory), but were I just a fan from Portugal who never heard of these boards, I'd be very p***** off at VEI because comic book stores in Europe have to pay a LOT just to send the non-sold books back to the US of A. I could not get this entire event from my LCS. That's consumer discrimination, of some sorts (you'll read it monthly and in paper or else you won't). DC or Marvel level of gimmicky. Perhaps worse, since I never heard of a comic book by DC or Marvel that had the same distribution method (if I am wrong, I apologise in advance for my ignorance).
I'm with LM on this one: next time, if there's anything remotely similar to this, I'll vote with my wallet.
If I have to drop some monthlies, then fine. More budget for other companies' books (honest!). There are a LOT of other good monthly comics out there that I would love to read. I can put my money on those, instead.
It seems that VEI doesn't care if non-us/american territories readers get all of their books either way. I'll trade wait my favorite series of now or the new ones that get more buzz.
No gold book can take the bad taste that this gimmick left on me- and I will get the books!
But congrats to VEI- these are great numbers and news, I guess.
Apologies.

Are you a 100% against print comics. I'd think in this case, you'd just make an exception.BugsySig wrote:Not to rehash this debate, but just for the record my complaint was always that I as a digital reader was locked out from reading this story.jeremycoe wrote:Like that time Honda released a car I couldn't afford. Usually the shipping from the U.S. to UK is more expensive than the book itself (circa $17). Whilst LOTG #1 was and still is available (albeit for much more than in the US it seems) #2 is scarce and therefore expensive and I don't think I've seen a #3 for sale yet. But I'm not drastic enough to the drop the line (and I hope Leon doesn't), I'll just do without.agent_graves wrote:Midtown and Mycomicshop, both service the UK. No, but I didn't want to pay a premium price for it. As someone who has purchased every VEI comic since 2012 in digital form, I feel shafted out of reading the story. That's why I read the books.agent_graves wrote:Are you a 100% against print comics. I understand VEI need to do what it needs to do to sell more books, and if it works, it works. I just hope it doesn't come at the expense of another set of customers.

My
I think this premium content really screws people here in europe. In germany most comic shops won't order the amount of issues required to get a copy of LotG. Even if it's returnable, because no comic is returnable here. No one will send copies back since the shipping price just doesn't make it worth it. I don't care that it is cheaper than some incentive variants. I don't care for those. Stories matter to me. Covers don't. I already pay more than the cover price in euro cause of taxes and shipping. I don't want to have buy that many copies of a comic to qualify for another series.
Why build a system like this that deliberately makes people feel left out. When was creating a rift between a group of people ever a good idea?
Back to the topic:
I'm happy that Book of Death was a great success for Valiant. I just hope it was more for the quality and not the stupid marketing gimmick. But I kind of fear it's more of latter. This event didn't really feel like the best jumping on point to me.
