Book of Death #3 Discussion
this issue was kind of middling, the art was cool throughout but fighting zombie bears wasn't very thrilling really. The only part I really loved was Darque in the white suit, he's becoming a really good villain.

Those were the best parts. The fight with the Bears was boring. It's time for the big Showdown, see how this all pans out, and what's to come, post BOD.Brapbrap wrote:The only part I really loved was Darque in the white suit, he's becoming a really good villain.
BOD:LOTG, was just as good, if not better, than last month.

In some places the art was good but in others in looked bad to me.
Thankfully the story is interesting.

Re: Book of Death #3
I've been mostly enjoying the BOD series. I thought the addition of Darque was a great bit to the storyline. I enjoyed the psychic connection aspect to the two young Geomancers. And when Darque walked in the door at the beginning....great stuff. I'd been missing a decent antagonist in the Valiant line.

So is the Dark Geomancer in the future actually David, or is that Master Darque after stealing David's power? During the first couple issues I assumed they were referring to David, but after this issue I'm not sure... it looks like Darque!

An okay issue. Gil should not be allowed to draw bears ever again, though.

It's Darque. He's stealing the Geomancer power for himself.
I liked it - Darque is a great villain. Tama can be a bit petulant, but she finally helped out. Glad Gilad figured out the link.
Someone said it earlier, and I have to agree, LOTG was even better this issue than last.

I think its darque, this issue said something about david messing up the geonancer lineage so the powers must go to darqueKeith wrote:So is the Dark Geomancer in the future actually David, or is that Master Darque after stealing David's power? Re: Book of Death #3
The art was consistently great, althought I didn't feel like much happened this issue. We already knew going into it that Master Darque was the big bad. Ninjak and X-O Manowar appear for a couple pages to nurse their wounds. Punk Mambo appears on one page, foreshadowing a bigger role in the next issue. The rest of the book is Gilad and Tama fighting Master Darque's zombie animals. We'd already figured out that Darque can track them when they read the book, so a lot of this issue was spent on exposition we probably already knew. It moved the pieces in place for the next issue, but it wasn't as satisfying as the previous issues. I'm not a fan of Neville just calling up random heroes in the Valiant universe to use as a deus ex machina, I'd rather see more creative ways of getting different characters to interact. I was kind of hoping for a twist, like Sandria Darque appearing or something. The future glimpses seemed generic and didn't build the Valiant universe in any noticeable way. I'm still hoping for a good conclusion, but I think I could have skipped from issue 2 to 4 without missing anything here.

I have been wondering if the character above Gilad's shoulder is David (older of course).

This definitely had the feel of a place holder issue to get to the finale. I get the sense we will get a convergence of Gilad, Unity and Darque in the final issue. Not much to the future scenes this issue except the confirmation that Darque is the one doing the damage.

Re: Book of Death #3
I'd give this a 3/5 if I were rating the book.
Didn't really add all that much to the BOD event to date though I did like the flashback to Darque showing up and nabbing David. Wonder where Shadowman is throughout this?
As many have already stated, the generic future glimpses didn't do anything for me. I would've liked to have seen more along lines of what we glimpsed in #1 but not to be.
I felt like BOD #3 was the lesser of the two BOD book this week with LOG #3 hitting it out of the park.
Still a good read - one that will need a couple of re-reads I think...

Re: Book of Death #3
I'm not sure we see Unity in this much, perhaps Roku, Punk Mambo and Dr Mirage with Ninjak as the battle draws the Valiant heroes to the Deadside? would set up the next arc of Ninjak nicely while also keeping the continuity threads alive from the glimpse of the new Unity team in BOD #1...BugsySig wrote:This definitely had the feel of a place holder issue to get to the finale. Re: Book of Death #3
I doubt that. Neville, Caphaw and Unity still believe Gilad and Tama are causing these incidents and are trying to find them. Once they do, they'll likely converge at the same place (wherever Darque is) and realize, "*SQUEE*, that guy we've been teammates with for the past 2 years WAS telling the truth the whole time! Let's get that creepy looking bad guy! Unity, UNITE!!!"Bl00dsh0t wrote:I'm not sure we see Unity in this much, perhaps Roku, Punk Mambo and Dr Mirage with Ninjak as the battle draws the Valiant heroes to the Deadside? would set up the next arc of Ninjak nicely while also keeping the continuity threads alive from the glimpse of the new Unity team in BOD #1...BugsySig wrote:This definitely had the feel of a place holder issue to get to the finale. Re: Book of Death #3
Here's what I wanna know; who are all the characters featured in the spread? Some are obvious or should be identifiable with an educated guess....Keith wrote:I zoomed in on Comixology, and am fairly certain that is woman.jaden_sai wrote:I believe it's Master Darque.Keith wrote:So is the Dark Geomancer in the future actually David, or is that Master Darque after stealing David's power? From left to right
1... Not sure who the black girl is; don't think Livewire, she didn't look like that in fall of ninjak
2 .. I'm thinking silk floating in the chair
3... Either a new Bloodshot (not likely per Fall of Bloodshot) I'm thinking an early Rai
4....another mystery woman
5.... Obviously Gilad
6.... Zephyr floating
7....not sure, maybe a ninjak follower (aka spylocke)
8....Gravedog
9....looks like Alyssa from Shadowman
10....the blur from the United
11....vine commando, possibly Trill
12....not sure, but I love the crossbones like mask with a suit look (hoping to see more of this character) plus a crowbar is a badass weapon
13...Roku
14....I'm thinking an adult Darpan; he's got that Middle East vibe
15....Peter? He's floating and has energy fists
16....Dr Mirage
Question 2 is How are some of these folks still alive; isn't the fall approximately 1000 yrs in the future?
Silk can jump a new body; Gilad is eternal, Bloodshot nanites or if it is a Rai; it's also logical; Peter is a psiot like Harada; prolonged aging; and Roku; well maybe the undead monk taught her/embed her somehow; but Mirage and Gravedog?

That's so awesome, and had to be a reference on purpose from V-Ditty, given their history of interaction on Twitter. So cool! Seriously, has anyone mentioned it to Dunlow to see if he knows?
As to the issue, I enjoyed it. I'm in agreement with those of you saying it has to be Darque as the twisted Geomancer in the future scenes, rather than an adult David. It wasn't clear in the first couple issues, as the artwork didn't depict any of his trademark tattoos at all, but it seems to me that he wrests the power away from David, and inthinknit makes sense that would be his intention all along.
The biggest question I have (and hope to see answered), is how did Darque get free from the dead side? It's been along time since we've seen him (other than the new storylines over in Ninjak), but as far as I can recall, he was still trapped there. I'm thinking the end of this mini-series will lead into the Ninjak storyline "Operation Deadside".

Whilst I'm definitely not saying Gill is a bad artist, I don't think his style was suited to this book. So much so that the art detracted from my enjoyment of this book and it was especially noticeable when Braithwaite's art kicked in which was more in keeping with the dark theme. I'm surprised VEI gave this high profile book to a new artist, seems like a unnecessary risk given the other options (Nord, Braithwaite etc). And yes, the way he drew the bear looked very cartoonish! I think Gill is suited to a book like Harbinger, he draws younger characters quite well.
As for the story, I enjoyed it and I thought it was solid.

I'm not sure when Earth goes bad, but we have no idea when this square off happens. It could be in three years from now for all we know.
