As of that point in time, Ed said BoD #2-4 were not discounted AND a retailer had to order a specific ratio of their #1 order to qualify.

Like I said, VEI may have changed the rules since then, but I don't remember hearing about it.
Look at that link again. Ed said BoD #2-4 would cost about $1 each (if they ordered at least the required ratio). He said Legends of the Geomancer would cost the retailer about $2.
Actually, now that I re-read that whole part of that thread, it's a very confusing set of rules. They are only discounted to 50% ($1) if the retailer orders 65% of the BoD #1 order, otherwise there is no discount and they would cost $2. So, the retailers that went overboard on selling LoG #1 will have a harder time getting #2-4 for people than those that just ordered a regular amount.

:hm: I may be able to convince my retailer to order 10 each of BoD #2-4 and have copies to read on day of release...

Is there a limit, Ed, on how minimum orders of BoD #2-4 to receive the 50% discount? I'm quite sure my LCS only ordered 1-2 copies of BoD #1 so 10 would be well over 65% of 2...
You better talk to your LCS soon. I think FOC is probably next week.

And this email today was the first communication I have received from TFAW since placing the order possibly on the first day they offered it for pre-order.

I got the same email. I honestly wasn't surprised, but they should have cancelled the order 2 months ago. I sent them the following reply:
You could have ordered it, but apparently chose not to. Next time consider informing a potential customer before orders are due with Diamond instead of waiting until it's too late to arrange purchasing it from someone else.

My email response to TFAW:
geocarr to TFAW wrote:I do not believe the company's response below and I believe TFAW is lying to me twice.

LIE #1:
Valiant made it very clear that this book would be distributed as an incentive according to a ratio to Book of Death #1 orders which your website shows you have in stock in multiple covers. That tells me that TFAW received some number of copies of Legends of the Geomancer. I know I placed my pre-order on the first or second day that this book was listed on the TFAW website. Why am I not getting at least one copy?

LIE #2:
TFAW's message below implies that the supplier (Diamond) is to blame and they are not and I know this. The TFAW staff responsible for ordering books either made a calculation mistake, deliberately under-ordered Book of Death #1 creating an inability to fulfill pre-orders for Legends of the Geomancer #1, or weren't smart enough to understand the terms that Valiant set for the distribution of Legends of the Geomancer.

It is very bad business form that this is the first communication I have received about my pre-order and that TFAW sends the email a week after the book has been released giving me and other customers no chance to try to pre-order it elsewhere.

When I worked at a comic book store and we offered a customer a certain book at a certain price, we delivered it no matter what and we made money on 99% of sales and lost money on the occasional error but we always made the customer happy and kept our advertised promises. I most likely will not do business with TFAW again.
Yeah, I'm not surprised but I am p!ssed.

I actually asked them last Wednesday by email and they assured they've ordered enough from their distributor, but the distributor came up short.

I bet they tried to order more than 1:25 of their BoD orders, then.

I imagine their conversation with Diamond went something like this:

TFAW: How come you didn't send the 100 copies of Legends of the Geomancer we ordered?
Diamond: Because you only ordered 100 copies of Book of Death.

lorddunlow wrote: I'm obviously not very happy about it, but looking at it from a business perspective, it obviously did what they set out to do. Fred Pierce as much as said they would do it again and other promotions like it (at the SDCC panel) since it seemed successful. I just hope they bring in enough new readers with each of these promotions to make up for the fans they will lose. That part of the equation remains to be seen.
it's fan abuse. one of the reasons i got into valiant is they were putting out a decent product and seemed like a great up and coming company that i could get behind.

i think i might be one of the first casualties of the LOG promotion. after deciding to not get LOG i dropped all kind-t books because lets be honest they blow *SQUEE* chunks. i realized yesterday the only valiant titles that have been consistently good through the years were written by dysart…. then i think why am i buying all these other books when really all i should be reading are the dysart books…. :?

haven't officially decided to drop non dysart titles but might as well right? If i wanted to participate in fan abuse i would go back to reading marvel.

basically quality is going down and prices are going up. :?

Here's a bit of good retailer-customer news: I had a conversation with a very professional manager from MIdtown late last week about the LotG price hike, and they've since sent me 2 emails confirming that my BoD/BoD:Bdshot/LotG order has been mailed out with no LotG price hike.

I think what you're missing is this:
LotG #2-4 get distributed at a 1:10 ratio of Book of Death orders. Orders for #1 make no difference to this point.
*If* a retailer orders at least 65% of their total order of #1 for each of issues 2-4, then the larger discount kicks in. Otherwise a retailer could cut their numbers to 40% and receive the same number of LotG issues as they received for #1.

I emailed them on Monday and inquired about it, since the book had been released. I was told there was no problem. Got the same email today. I actually went to their website and loaded as many issues of BoD into my cart as I could, and there was around 100 available still, so they did receive some of their LotG copies based on the number of BoD they still have available.

Worse than TFAW, in my opinion, is Mycomicshop. I pre-ordered with them, and just realized a few days ago that they emailed a few weeks ago to say that the listing was an error. They charged me for the books when I ordered, and in the cancellation email told me they were converting the charge to a store credit which I can use for other merchandise. So I basically had to go after a refund that should have been processed automatically. Avoid. Their customer service is horrible.

Although they'd be dumb to order just 40% of their #1 orders. Let's say a retailer ordered 100 copies of issue 1 and got 4 copies of LoG, They would need to order 40 copies of BoD issue 2 to get 4 copies of LoG 2. That would cost then $80. If they ordered 65 copies of BoD 2 they would get 6 copies of LoG 2 and only spend $65. I'm thinking there are retailers not smart enough to see that.

Sorry to read some of the trouble board members are having. I was lucky to get a copy at $25AU from my LCS after initially being told i'd have to pay $97.50AU for 15 copies of B.O.D as they only order 10 copies of Valiant #1's.

Hey Bloodshot,

Where in Australia are you? I'm in Melbourne. I go to two LCS and I asked both to order me copies. Both have been really good though. I organized with All Star Comics to orde 25 BoD to get the LotG. But they only made me buy 15 to get the LotG for free, but also threw in the 1:10 & 1:25 variants for free, so they were great to deal with. Alternate Worlds charged me $50 for the issue but didn't make me buy all the variants. But they had heaps of BoD on the shelf and were charging US cover price. They would have had at least 50 on the shelves last week, and this week there was half that, so they're helping spread the Valiant word in their own way. I was happy about that. And I wasn't to concerned about having tonsured what I did. I'm lucky my income is healthy and secure and they are a business that I want to support.

When I picked up my copy at my LCS (I am the largest Valiant subscriber in their chain of local stores) it cost me $40. They got 100 total copies of BOD for one store, and I believe around 25->50 for the other two.

I've actually read through about 90% of this thread, and all of the arguments either way have already been made. I would be lying if I said I wasn't upset about having to go through this as a fan. I will continue to buy all 9 monthly releases as I look forward to their books more than any other company every week (yes, even the Matt Kindt ones, though I do agree they are currently the weakest books.) If this becomes a regular thing, this is the last time I will personally be participating.
