I have a 5-year-old girl, a two-year-old girl and a boy on the way in early December. As they get older how do I determine who gets the Valiant collection? Do I start three pull lists? Who gets the Divinity #1 LaRossa or do I give blood to buy two more? Where are the probate lawyers in the forum? How does the forum plan to pass down their coveted collections?

Put all of them individually in unmarked blank envelopes and let them draw one by one.

Excellent idea! Unless one of them starts pulling all the variants. Then I end up with a battle royale on my hands, but they'll be grown adults by then.

If you really want one of them to get a certain book, put it in the freezer and tell them to grab the cold one.

i would say your kids don't want your collection. they will have their own interests. sell your collection before you die and do something fun with the money.

Maybe I should sell it now and just throw it in retirement accounts and the kids' college funds.

I split up my Batman collection several years ago and gave it to my three kids. I tried to make it equal for each boy- one got the Batman collection and one got the Detective collection and so on. For my daughter, I gave her all the kid oriented Batman titles, plus I had collected several Tiny Titans issues for her. I made them promise that if they sell their collection, I get half (since I spent all the money) and the other half has to go in their savings account. The boys sold out rather quickly, but my daughter has hung on to most of her collection.

Going forward, I think my daughter will inherit my VH1 bound HC collection and my VEI Deluxe HC's. Plus, since she likes the Teen Titans, she will get my Teen Titans HC collection. As for the rest of VEI and everything else, I plan to sell it all someday to raise money for our Florida retirement home on the beach. :hope: :cloud9:

As for the Divinity #1 Larosa variant, sell now and put $85.00 into each kid's college fund. It will be worth much more by the time they are ready for school than the comic book. :hm:

Over time, you will know who is best suited for your comic collection and it is a blast handing it over to them. :thumb:

+1 :thumb: solid ideas all around. I've been fortunate to have saved up and purchased some great silver age books when I was a kid (FF 48-50, ASM 5, Iron Man 2, Daredevil 2, and others), but I've periodically picked up some great VEI books like SM 5 grampa, Harbinger 8 1:125, Golds, etc. Its just tough to know how long to hold on to these. Sell them now and use the proceeds for investing or just keep them and give them to the kids when they're older. Great ideas from everyone!

It's interesting that you post this since I am presently thinking of liquidating my SA Marvel collection. I honestly can't say I picture myself leaving it to an heir that won't appreciate it like a real fan would, so that means I'll wind up selling it some day... and I've been thinking of getting back into my old hobby of saltwater reef tanks/aquaculture, which costs a small fortune.

I have a four year old daughter and we read back issues of IDW's TMNT almost every night. I also have a two year old son and a daughter due to be sliced and diced out of her mom next month. I'm thinking of the possibility of a few grand kids before I am ready to give up my collection, but I plan on taking notes on who favors what and divide up the books (evenly or not) with that in mind. Haven't read Valiant to my four year old yet (she is four), but she has picked up the names X-O, Bloodshot, and Archer & Armstrong by going to the comic book store with me. And she already wants her own monthly title. I there will be drama splitting up the Valiant collection through my kids, so I really am leaning more towards gifting to grandchildren. Unmarked envelopes does sound like a fun way to go about it, but I am also a fan of rock paper scissors best out of one for tough decisions.

Listen to the financial planner....

I plan on leaving my boys a handful of slabs, along with investments and ral estate. They don't need my hobbies. They should find their own.

I just visited my grandmother. She is giving everything away. It's crazy. She is also losing her memory a bit. Tried to give me a pink chest. I just asked for some photos. That's all I want. Besides the securities and real estate;)

That's my thinking. My dad collected coins and stamps. He passed when I was a teen, and I just sold the coins for their silver value any time I needed cash for whatever a 15 year old kid does.

I'm sorry, dad. facepalm

But I'm not gonna make that mistake. If I left it to my son he'd just sell it on Craigslist for next to nothing the first time he needed money for car insurance or whatever.

I'm just going to sell my VH1 Hoard in the next 2-3 years and use the cash to fund 1-2 years of state college for my daughters. (I'll still keep certain high-grade keys of course)

They very much like comics, but not as much as preparing for life.

yeah you're kids will have their own interests. your collection could actually become a burden on your child.

unless you have something culturally significant and or truly worth a fortune to leave your kids I say sell the collection and invest in hookers and blow.

My father had a Journey Into Mystery #83, Fantastic Four #1, and several other Silver Age keys. Grandma threw them out back in the 1970's from what I can tell, and I never saw them. Clearly I would have loved to receive such books from him, but such is life.

I wondered when someone would suggest hookers and blow. Seems obvious, right?

If you have a lot of net worth tied up in a hobby, I think it is better to dispose of the assets before you die. That's not based on any financial planning advice, but I have repeatedly seen the family members, regardless of how much they loved the departed, quickly liquidate the hobby in a bulk sale.

One fairly recent example is that this person had $100k+ of coins and almost all were highly graded. A "friend" of the family offered 60% of melt value and the family took it. Of course, with melt value plummeting since that time, maybe it was a smart decision.

Oddly enough, a family member will forever hang on to dad's old laserdisc player because he just loved that thing.

Yea.. I've always done things different then most people. (Obviously, considering the hoard of v1 slabs I currently own). People have thought I was nuts for years. Doesn't bother me... I do this as a hobby not for financial gain. (However, appreciation is always welcomed. :D )

I will accumulate more and more and more. My family knows what I do... They know how crazy and obsessed I am... They know my love for Valiant... They know the dedication to the company and hobby.

Believe it or not I have a plan. :?

Leaving different things to different people. Everything is marked for sell ( if I don't get to before I croak) that needs to sell, the rest is passed on. Everyone around me associates me with my hobby... So many DO (especially kids) want these books.

I've watched countless people come and go. Get excited and go nuts just to sell it a few years later. I'm what you call a "strong" hand in the stock market... I've been here.... I'll be here!

Just a different perspective.

I want to inspire people to collect Valiant... So I do what I do. :thumb:

I've set aside some books for my oldest daughter (not yet 4) and haven't decided about what to do regarding my infant twin daughters. One thing that has been weighing heavily on my mind lately is the old adage "You can't take it with you." As I see (and occasionally attend) estate sales with gargantuan collections this point is driven home even harder. I can't help but wonder who will one day be riffling through my collection that took the better part of a lifetime to create. So...I have already started selling certain things to pay for basic necessities and hopefully special experiences in the near future for my kids. I'd like my daughters to experience the same joy with comics that I do but as others have said, they need to find their own path/joy/hobbies. As a result passing on the bulk of the collection to them is not in the cards for me.

I'm tightening up my collection, narrowing it down to Valiant, Ultraverse (heh) and Marvel keys. The rest I've been selling off to pay for trips and life experiences. Money's not so much the issue, I just have too much *SQUEE*.
