Another day, another variant... Turok Tales of the Lost Land

Post by greg »

Looks like we've identified another variant...

The edition of Turok Tales of the Lost Land (1998) that was included
in the Acclaim Heroes & Legends four-pack was a no UPC, no cover price version.

The other three books, Turok Spring Break, Shadowman Vol2 #1,
and Bloodshot Vol2 #9, appear to be the standard direct editions.

Here's the package that it came in...

The normal version of the book has a price on the left, and UPC on the right.

Great discovery, Greg!

Where did you find your 4-pack? Do you think that that Antonio guy who bought the Acclaim stuff might have any of these? Or maybe some other undiscovered variants?---Steve

Credit goes to Erskine71 for the "discovery" of the difference.

He sent me a note a few years ago (before I had any Acclaim stuff on the ValiantComics.com site).
I've switched computers a few times since then, so I didn't think about
them again until this week when people started discussing
the newsstand versions of the later Bloodshot issues being available
in a "pack" at retail outlets.

I'm sure I got the pack from Ebay in the past, because I never
see any Valiant or Acclaim "retail" items in local stores.

Do you plan on adding it to the checklist?

Interesting question...
The number of "known books" has grown since our last checklist update.
Also, the X-O/Iron Man Video Game variant shown hasn't been located beyond
a single copy, as far as I know. But there's also a Sega Genesis version, right?

It seems like it's about time for a review of the checklists,
and potentially some separation should be made between
items that were "not intended for direct market", which could
include the listing of newsstand books, marketing giveaway books, etc.

Thoughts?

I could see some sort of side list. If nothing else it would help to keep track of just what differences in certain issues there really are.

They are legitimate cover variations.

So this is "Acclaim Heroes & Legends"?

I thought it was going to be a new anthology series that was going to replace Turok when it became a monthly.

Where were these sold? I don't remember ever seeing them in Previews.

By the by...does anyone know if the Eternal Warriors book that they forgot to include the cover price on.....leading to the addition of the "OOPS!" sticker....if a non-stickered copy exists?

It HAS to.

SOMEONE has to have said "hmmm...let's NOT sticker a couple of these for fun."

When it comes to ACCLAIM, there is a larger amount of promo items geared towards the gamer, instead of the comic collector. It's like the comics were a footnote....which they were.

It would be cool to have a seperate list for newstand and gaming variants. There may even be more to discover as time goes on.

Actually, I think it would be cool if Greg expanded the checklists by being all inclusive of Valiant & Acclaim, including a Pre-hero Valiant checklist and a complete Acclaim checklist beyond the Valiant Heroes line. They are both fairly small checklists, and it wouldn't be necessary to be at 100%.

It would also be cool to have a listing of Valiant related Video Game Strategy Guides and the Turok paperbacks because they all included original character artwork published no where else, and many fans are unaware of them.---Steve

I haven't ran across one yet, but someone did say that they peeled the sticker off quite awhile ago and it didn't come off very well.

Some people will do anything for fun.

BTW, very good catch guys! Any idea yet as to print-run on these?

Ok, there are two different "Heroes & Legends" packs...
one is for Mature Readers, and the other is general.

Evidently, the Mature Readers version only contains one variant,
the Tales of the Lost Land no price/no UPC.

The general audiences version contains two variants,
the Turok Empty Souls variant of no price/no UPC
and also the Tales of the Lost Land no price/no UPC.

From svair's picture, it would seem that Antonio also obtained the no price/no UPC variants
in his purchase of Acclaim overstock books.

A rough estimate obtained from a former Acclaim employee
would put the number of Tales of the Lost Land at 20,000
(because it was in both packs) and the number of Empty Souls at 15,000,
because it was only in the general audience pack.
(The estimate is 15,000 for general audience packs, 5,000 for mature packs.)

These would have been intended for sale at toy store chain (possibly Toys R Us) in about 1999-2000,
but obviously if they were found in Antonio's holdings of Acclaim overstock,
the total numbers could be different.
The books in the packs were supposed to have been overstock
that was still sitting around in 1999-2000.

I realize the print runs on the direct editions of these books weren't very high,
so it's likely that the estimated number of four-packs is possibly too high.

The "Mature Readers" pack back cover mentions Turok, Bloodshot, and Shadowman.
Two Turok books, and one of Bloodshot and Shadowman.

The regular pack back cover mentions Turok, Magnus, Ninjak, Troublemakers, and X-O.
The pack has two Turok books and two selected from the four titles.
It's likely that a variety of pack combinations exist, but all should have the
Turok Empty Souls book on the front and the Tales of the Lost Land on the back.

I have some four packs I picked up a Toys R Us back in '94....

But I don't see them selling the "Mature" version.

They do sell mature rated video games, so it is possible.

The only Sega product this came out for was the Sega Saturn....Genesis was done right about this time.
