ValiantFans.com for Hurricane Relief... RAFFLE RESULTS!
ValiantFans.com for Hurricane Relief
Cliff VanMeter and Bob Hall have each agreed to provide a
donated piece of artwork in support of the Hurricane Katrina Relief
efforts of ValiantFans.com.
Instead of an auction for charity, which has only one winning donation,
we can pool our efforts to support the hurricane victims by having a drawing/raffle
for the donated artwork. Each dollar donated will be one entry into the drawing.
In order to know who's donated and entered, I'll act as the central "donation point"...
either via PayPal (greg@valiantcomics.com) or check/money order (PM for address).
All money collected will be donated to www.mercycorps.org Hurricane Katrina Fund weekly.
$0.92 of every dollar is being spent directly on the hurricane efforts.
Apart from the PayPal fees, we will not lose much to "administrative costs".
The drawing will not take place immediately, but your money can be
used to help hurricane victims immediately.
As always, you can donate directly to the charity/organization of your choosing,
however, I won't have any record of those donations for this drawing.
If you'd like to also take part in this ValiantFans.com project, please do.
CURRENT RAFFLE ITEMS:

In addition to the artwork being provided by Cliff VanMeter and Bob Hall,
this program is open to any other artists who would like to donate artwork.
If you are in contact with former Valiant artists who might be willing to donate art,
please contact them and let them know about this project...
let me know if you have questions, or if you would like to donate.
The imagery of Valiant characters helping hurricane victims is quite appropriate,
especially Shadowman, as a New Orleans native... but any Valiant-related
donations would be welcome as a "Thank You" to those who've donated.
Again, I understand if anyone prefers to handle donations privately,
or through their own choice of charity/organization...
this project will remain open to any ValiantFans.com member
who is interested in taking part... hopefully, we can make a difference!

HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF RAFFLE RESULTS
Each donation was logged as it came in,
and each dollar represents one "ticket"
in the raffle.
Before letting donors know which tickets they had,
I asked the top donors to provide me with a seven-digit
number of their choice. The only rule was that
the number should not start or end with a zero,
and it should be something random, in order to
avoid matching any other seven-digit choices.
Then, the tickets were assigned in donation order.
For example, the first donation might have
been $10, so that donor was assigned tickets
#1-#10. If the next donation was $7,
then that donor was assigned tickets #11-#17.
(Etc.)
We had $629 in donations.
Tickets #1-#629 have been assigned.
The winning numbers will be determined by
dividing the 7-digit choice of the top donors
by the number 629, with the remainder becoming
the winning ticket.

I spent some time in one of the local shelters this week, and these people definitely need as much help as they can get. Most of them have lost everything. No insurance company will write a policy for flood insurance in New Orleans, so they don't even have that. They're going to need a lot of help rebuilding their lives.
I think this is a very worthwhile effort and I want to thank Cliff Van Meter for his contributions. Hopefully other artists can pitch in as well and we can raise a lot of money. Thank you, Greg, for setting this up. If our little community can work together, a lot of good can be done and a lot of people can be helped.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I'm confused .... If I donate money to this relief effort, my contribution is worth one point per dollar. Each point is worth one ticket in the raffle, right?............. Which raffle? the Bob Hall or the Van Meter masterpiece?Mr. Hall will do an "on request" type sketch or a drawing of his choosing? Mr. VanMeter is doing "as requested" type drawing correct? Please elaborate as I am going to donate more to these efforts and I'd love to do it here on the pages.

When I was five, I dragged my dad into "Mike's Comic Hut"... If only I'd known..

I plan to leave the project open for a while, at least another month,
since there are still donations coming in, and the need for
hurricane relief is still high.
When it's time to do the raffle, here's how it will work:
Each entry is assigned a number (and belongs to the person entered).
You can pretend each one is a ticket...
Once all the entries are assigned, I'll send an email to those who have donated
and let them know what their entry numbers are.
At that time, I'll also ask each person to supply me with a list of random numbers.
I might say... pick three numbers that are between 1000 and 9999.
Everyone who's entered will pick numbers and I'll combine them so that
we get a random winning number for a particular prize.
For example, I might take the first number from the first 3 people on the list and add them together.
Then I'll divide by the number of entries and find out what the remainder is.
Whoever has the entry for the remainder is the winner.
Scenario: I get one number between 1000 and 9999 from the first 3 people...
Let's pretend those three "random" numbers are 1457, 4526, 8733.
I add them together to get a total of 14716.
If there were $478 dollars raised in the project,
then I will divide 14716 by 478, and check the remainder.
478 goes into 14716 thirty times, with 376 leftover.
The winning entry would be #376.
If we only had $275 raised in the project, then the winning number would be #141.
(14716 divided by 275 has a remainder of 141.)
If there is no remainder, then the winner is the last entry.
(#478 in the $478 example, or #275 in the $275 example.)
Every entry has an equal chance to win... and the winning numbers are "picked" by the people entered.
Sound good?

anything regarding mathmatics is over my head dude...i'm way to "right brained" for that analytical stuff.
i tell you what, you figure out the method that you think is fairest and i'll go with that.
besides, it's not so much about getting the stuff as it is trying to do something positive for the people affected.
every little bit helps...i just wish i was able to do more.

Another donation has arrived...
5 copies of Deathmate Prologue Gold Edition.
Thank you!
There are currently more donated items than there are donators!
I suppose a few lucky ones might win more than one prize.
Each dollar is an entry... each entry has a chance to win.
(Yes, a single donator may win multiple items...)

It might not seem like much, but that money is sorely needed and will be put to good use I'm sure. Just think about all those families that were forced out of their homes and haven't earned a paycheck in over a month! How many of us could survive without regular replenishments to the old bank account?greg wrote:Just an update... donations are nearing $300 (currently at $280),
