Tales from The Deadside.
I can sort of see an attempt to copy/homage the logo from "Tales From The Darkside", but it's nooooot quite there.
A more accurate replica with the same font, color, shadow, style, etc, would have been awesome.
The concept of a horror anthology narrated by Jaunty in the style of a classic EC host like the Cryptkeeper is certainly valid.
Censoring the cursing in what is a horror comic is a weird choice, as is the T+ rating on the back cover. Horror should ALWAYS be rated R.
As for the first story, when you have an African-American character named Michael who is accused of murder that travels to the Deadside using a creature embedded in his chest and bonds with a Loa, it's impossible not to associate him with Michael Leroi, the VH-2 Shadowman.
So, in my head canon that's who he is; VEI Leroi.
The art in this story was not all that great, but it was servicable.
The second story was a lot of fun. It has a quest, an adventure. Seeing Punk Rambo forcibly returned to her pre-punk appearance was fun.
Like other comics I've mentioned before, this story demands a follow up. While I'd like it to continue in an ongoing series after Resurgence, odds are this will be resolved within that event.
The art in this one was an improvement on the previous tale, but it suffers from some of the lack of detail I've mentioned before in other comics.
The third story was great. Jaunty's origin, totally unexpected.
A very grounded tale for a very ungrounded character.
The art was on point, no complaints there.
I like the idea of "Shadowman as the Phantom", which is what the origin of the Shadow loa has essentially done to the character, particularly as presented here in the form of an African Shadowman (others might say "Black Panther", but, no. That's not what this is. This is definitely more like the ghost who walks).
Makes me want to see a Phantom/Shadowman crossover, asap.
I generally like how the origin of the Shadow Loa has developed in VEI. It is somewhat evocative of the origin of the VH 2 Shadowman as told in Serge Clermont's short run.
Generally speaking, the VEI iteration of Shadowman takes all the best aspects of both the VH 1 and VH 2 version and makes them work.
For instance, from VH 2 Jaunty is still around (albeit as a monkey instead of a snake), while Alyssa is pretty much a combination of VH 1 and VH 2's Nettie (serving the role of the former with the appearance of the latter).
