Valiant and CGC sales - by the numbers (2002 to 2017) review
Using the GPAnalysis.com recorded sales for Valiant and Acclaim comics which were CGC graded and sold on a reported venue (primarily Ebay), we've got a few things we can say about the Valiant CGC market:
- GPAnalysis records $1,700,000+ in total sales dollars (excluding shipping costs) for the sale of 23,770 Valiant and Acclaim comics between 2002 to 2017, for an average "price per slab" of $72.
There was an expected increase in CGC sales for Valiant books when VEI started reprinting Valiant books in 2007-2008, then a decline,
an increase again when they began publishing monthly in 2012, then a decline...
but did anyone realize the multiplier-increase in 2015 which continues today?

Re: Valiant and CGC - by the numbers (2002 to 2017) review
Just looking at CGC sales for the comics as they were being published by VEI, the numbers are:
2012 VEI books sold during 2012: $16,100 (beginning May 2012)
2013 VEI books sold during 2013: $3,300
2014 VEI books sold during 2014: $2,400

2016 VEI books sold during 2016: $8,000
2017 VEI books sold during 2017: $14,100
Of the $1,700,000 in total sales recorded 2002 to 2017:
$525,000 are sales of Valiant 1990s books between 2002 and 2011.
$210,000 are sales of VEI books between 2012 and 2017.
$915,000 are sales of Valiant 1990s books between 2012 and 2017.
In 2017 alone:

looks like the Sony leaks and the DMG involvement with Valiant spiked the huge surge in 2015 that continues today.
Those that started risking a few key purchases, decided they would be fans too (possibly) and maybe those people became collectors

So....we’re not just reading them, we’re slabbing hard, selling high, and slabbing some more!
Let the good times roll.
God bless variants, preorder editions, store exclusives, and brush metal editions.
How does this compare to Marvel and Dc slab sales?
Was there a spike in their sales in 2015 too?

I'd be interested in the breakdown of the VEI numbers. Are those sales of books that just came out or are prices increasing over time?

Re: Valiant and CGC sales - by the numbers (2002 to 2017) re
If I had to speculate on the behavior, it would be that the product line as a whole will see more professional grading across the entire publishing line, until a movie comes out. Then, around that time some of the "general slabbing" will cease and we'll see more title-specific slabbing based on what movies are released and what characters are announced.
Right now basically might be the best time for this, while everyone uses their own opinions on slab specs as related to media cross-pollination, rather than using film and T.V. release info, as it may be in the immediate future.

2,388 sales of VEI CGC-graded books recorded, totalling $228,800.Jrosen wrote:I'd be interested in the breakdown of the VEI numbers. Are those sales of books that just came out or are prices increasing over time?
For those 2,388 sales, 630 of the sales (26%) occurred the same year book was released, and another 704 (another 30%) of the sales occurred in the next year after the book was released (which may have been only a month or two later).
Just looking at 2012 VEI books, there have been 687 sales of CGC graded copies.
2012 VEI books sold in 2012: 162 CGC sales (beginning in May 2012)
2012 VEI books sold in 2013: 150 CGC sales
2012 VEI books sold in 2014: 74 CGC sales
2012 VEI books sold in 2015: 125 CGC sales
2012 VEI books sold in 2016: 92 CGC sales

2012 VEI books sold in 2018: 10 CGC sales (through Feb 19th)

I agree Ricomortis!
Only ten VEI slab sales on eBay in 2018 so far!!!! That’s has to be a mistake. I’ve purchased five so far this year on eBay. Have I purchased 50% of the VEI slabs sold on eBay?
My wife is going to kill me, lol

That's tracking sales for the 2012 books... not all of VEI.
There have been 10 sales in 2018 for CGC-graded 2012 VEI books.
Sales for 2013-2018 VEI graded books are not included in the numbers.

Re: Valiant and CGC sales - by the numbers (2002 to 2017) re
I have been buying a lot of Valiant CGC 9.8 slabs this past month after being away from the Boards for quite a few years and having not bought any slabs for the past 6 years. The price guide capturing eBay sales has been very helpful as has GPA analysis.
All the work Greg has done on this post here is great and provides some fantastic data.
I have always wondered though what percentage of sales gets captured by GPA Analysis and how much of the market it covers. When I sold off my 1961-65 CGC 8.0 run of Marvels in 2012 (man I wish I kept those books) I sold about 14.25% of the books by value via Heritage and sold the other 85.75% myself, primarily through the CGC forum boards.
If I look at what I purchased this month only 17% of the sales will hit GPA Analysis and the Valiant Price guide.
I was trying to build a nice chart but my bbcode skills are lacking so I just did a screenshot and photobucket the results.
